I feel that ever since the 2005's trailer of Killzone's E3 trailer video we have stumbled upon a screeching halt in video games and their gameplay department. There are little arguments you can make that not long after this time we are now in the worst state of the industry of Video Games. There are always exceptions, and it is nice to see Nintendo can still bring out masterful new iterations of their exclusive range. But those are exceptions.
It seems that gaming studios have a special budget specially designated to create the most immersive & scripted experience of their upcoming video games and showcase these experiences at big game conventions. As impressive and inspiring as Anthem's SCRIPTED trailer make it seem to be, please stop buying into the hype of these scheming marketeers. Demand a demo with a time limit on it, like in the times of the Xbox 360 E3 demo releases.
Legendary game studios have signed contracts (Bungie, Bioware, Lionhead, Rare) and their original cast of developers are longtime scattered across indie based companies. And Jason Jones man, what did you do? Sign a contract with Activision and make Destiny while getting rid of Marty & co? Other legendary developers (CD Project, EPIC Games, Turn 10, Polyphone, Naughty Dog, etc) are forced to reproduce the same formula every year or two since that is what sells. Some of these games are good. Again, there are exceptions. Let's not talk about EA and Ubisoft, this topic would turn into a ranting wall of text which it already is.
F*cking League of Legends & Dota 2. XP wrecking Dopamine sucking designed games to hook you in your prime years of youth until the day you pass.
Lootboxes. You want to be a pirate? Why has gambling invaded gaming so deeply? Who is participating so heavily & consistently for the superficial rush this concept gives? Where has your passion gone and strive for improvement gone?
After Gears of war, Uncharted & Crysis let's be perfectly honest with our self. The way we interact in our game environments has not been revolutionized but perfectly marketed towards casuals and are created to be as addicting as no less than a Casino intends you to play. We are playing re-skins and are willing to pay for remasters because deep down we know just how much better conceptually, structurally and fortified with deeper dynamics our games were.
The hype behind the Xbox one X is not without reason. People rather see their old games in re-skinned 4k textures and resolution than see which new IP flops next. Stop buying into Marketing and their intention to blindfold. Stop feeding reviewing sites like this one or any of those on Metacritic so much. I beg Bioware for me to be wrong and for Anthem to be the next step in gaming. But after being dissapointed and tricked into believing developers a multitude of times, I am sitting the hype surrounding any game out until further notice from the general public. Indie-world rejoice! Best of luck to you and your future endeavors I hope software improvements lead you to dethrone EA, Ubisoft, Sony, Microsoft & the likes of, with the small budgets you have.
