I wouldn';t say half, but I also wouldn't say you need to be a computer technician.
I admit, its a definite pain to game on the PC at times. In every game I own I have at least once been unceremoniously been booted to the desktop, and that only ever happened to me on consoles once, with Rainbow Six on PS3. Plus setting up GTA IV to even work on my PC was a time consuming chore.
That said, its one of the aspects of PC gaming, take it or leave it. If you want to jump in without worrying about installs (usually), compatibility issues, troubleshooting problems, GPU related issues, or DRM, then stick to console gaming. If you're fine with the occasional hard to start game or terribly optimized game, then I think some of the extra control freedom and interesting exclusive indie and PC genre titles (like MMO and RTS games) are worth it to get into PC gaming.
In all honesty, its not even that bad. Its something that doesn't happen on consoles, but a simple look into google for a solution can get you playing your game witha few simple steps. Usually.
And honestly, its a good sacrifice for the freedom PC gaming offer in modding, settings and control. You don't really have to deal with it on consoles because they have a single standard, on PC they have to deal with different set ups and cards and processors, etc. But the freedom to choose has a price, and if you aren't even smart enough to follow some online directions then you shouldn't even be getting into PC gaming if you can't deal witha few issues.
I hate when a legitimate problem is voiced so stupidly.
