The thing is the content changes ... it would be like adding a new story every couple months... if you know anything about free to play servers, especially PC, you should know that most of them are saturated with BOT's, retarded people that spam using trade chat throughout the whole game. You would know that the only way to take all of these away is to use filters.
Play a game like Flyff for a day, play a game like Runescape (ughhh) for a day ... play a game like Maplestory for a day. All three are free to play (with the exception that RS has a p2p server), you will notice many things in common with all three that it is filled with bots, spammers and currency sellers. While WoW is an exception (considering it has that many people online), if you take a notice of FFXI, there aren't many fishing bots anymore, there aren't really any bots that auto hunt NMs anymore, you do not see bots inside much or any at all selling gil...
The main reason why most get into FFXI is the story, even though many people complain that FFXI and FFXIV aren't and shouldn't be with the rest of the lot, I can say the story FFXI has is bigger than most of what 1-10 and 12 has to offer.
Not to mention SE has made it so that they can appeal more for those who don't have time. I admit I cut off FFXI this month and maybe for even longer because I have college courses, but it doesn't mean I don't mind heading back to play once I do have time.

you may not have noticed but alot of ps3 games have extra content released for little to nothing. i don't mind this to some degree, i do mind a monthly charge. i'm pretty sure they could filter out bots, especially on the ps3 version (nobodys said anything about cross platform play so theres no telling if pc's might bot up the ps3)
Simultaneous release, That means Germany, France, United States, Japan.
It was done in FFXI,
PS2, Xbox, PC, they all played on the server.
I don't think they'll want to split the whole community that much, because seriously, you'll have a lot of unpopulated servers. Take a look when SE allowed people to transfer servers. Some servers got so depleted that they had to take action and give people the option of switching to those unpopulated servers for free. Why would SE want to upkeep servers that are empty? Hmm.... I remember an MMO back then made so many servers to the point that after a while they had to close down a few and push everyone into the same servers.
I know good people who play on the PS2 and Xbox, and quite frankly, I doubt they want to seperate the community that much because it wouldn't have the FFXI "feel" that they stated.
