So, BotW has been out for a while now, and it's safe to say that it's one of the best Zelda releases in the last few years 3. My question to you is, at this present time, what are your favourite Zelda games? Does BotW displace games like OoT, ALttP and WW, which have been high in Zelda rankings as per common consensus for so long now?

For me, it's-

1) Breath of the Wild

2) A Link Between Worlds

3) Wind Waker

The best two are definitely Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. I guess I would put Majora's Mask as a distant third.

I still think it is too early to judge if Breath of the Wild has surpassed an all-time classic like Ocarina of Time. I'll reflect on it next year once the new game hype has cooled down.

Top 3:

1. A Link to the Past

2. Breath of the Wild

3. A Link Between Worlds

Still Great Tier:

Ocarina of Time

Windwaker

The Legend of Zelda

Majora's Mask

Twilight Princess

Meh Tier:

Skyward Sword

Minish Cap

Could never get into Zelda 2 or Link's Awakening and never beat either. Hated Phantom Hourglass and never finished it. Never played Spirit Tracks, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, or the Four Swords stuff.

I'd put Ocarina's story, characters, and of course dungeons over BOTW.

BOTW had potential for a great story but the supporting characters all kinda sucked.

But BOTW easily outshines Ocarina in world building, options, and fun stuff to do. I miss heart pieces in BOTW, but I liked the Korok seeds way better than the Skulltula tokens.

Anyway, I rank BOTW 2nd and Ocarina 4th on my Zelda list right now.

Link to the past is like the perfect game the sprites and animation hold up insanely well don't think the game will ever be forgotten cause of how good it looks and plays.

I like the first zelda but it is much harder than link to the past without a using a walkthrough especially the 2nd quest but thats what makes it fun is its hard to beat if I want a challenge I go with that one.

BotW and ALttP are a lock. What comes after that is whatever, but right now I'd probably roll with MM.

I'm still a bum who's done little more that start on ALBW, and I really need to revisit stuff like Minish Cap and Link's Awakening.

@ConanTheStoner:

Breath of The Wild was great. I have a hard time saying it isn't based on the amount of time I spent on it. However, it still didn't feel as grand as Ocarina. The game needed a touch more structure. The engine is the best of any Zelda game, I think. With that said there's a lot of missed opportunity. The combat engine is very robust, but there is never an A to B if that makes sense. Even within an open world there can still be "levels" of sorts.

...I could go on and on.

@heirren:

Yeah, I feel ya, it seems everyone wants something different from these games. From what I gather it seems a lot of people really just wanted the typical Zelda formula on a much larger scale.

And I won't even begin to pretend BotW is perfect. I saw a post the other day saying "Nintendo will never be able to outdo BotW", and it's like fvck no man, there's so much room to improve and expand on what BotW gave us. And I could certainly nit pick the game to death, as great as it is, it still has its share of weak or underwhelming aspects.

All that said, personally, it's my favorite 3d Zelda game and it's not even close lol. I felt that way about it within my first 10 hours on the game, before I even got to a dungeon. And from there it only continued to get better and better. It's just not even a question for me, and I highly doubt I'd be able to go back and replay the other 3d Zeldas at this point.

@heirren said:

Sure, it absolutely makes sense, but see, that's a big part of what I like about it. I thought it was amazing that there's no A to B. I like that the world isn't littered with hard gates and set paths. It's an action adventure that truly nails the sense of adventure.

Not having an A to B could certainly be detrimental to a game, but in this case I felt the execution of that "structure" was on point. Even though everyone played this game in a different order, my play through never felt wrong, or off, or ill paced. It felt like the game unfolded just as it was supposed to, even if my play was unique.

So while there is room for improvement, the main idea of BotW isn't something I'd want to see Nintendo back away from, on the contrary, I want them to take that aspect even further.

Anyways, there's no right or wrong about it. I just happen to love this direction for the series. I'd be pretty bummed if the next Zelda game goes back to railroading me through strictly structured content.

@ConanTheStoner:

Things can still be open and have A to B segments. There's the initial wow factor of how they managed to make the world exist. If fcks with the brain. Pick up real world rocks. This tree; it can be climbed. Halle Berry spread eagle--never mind that there are shrines to be found.

As massive as the world is you begin to wonder what can be done, given the flexibility of the game engine? A chase? A rescue? SOMETHING to test the player a bit more. Something to add some variety. It in no way negates the open nature of the game, just simply adds a bit of tension here and there.

A better shrine difficulty curve. 120?! How about far less with the an arc to difficulty--something more akin to old school dungeon design. Maybe enter a shrine on X part of the map, finish it, and all of a sudden you don't know where you are on Y side of the map? My point is that for the amount of time involved in the game there needed to be a bit more structure, peaks and valleys in what you do, to maintain interest. Everything got a tad easy, I should add, too.

...and here I am talking about the game like a child! Speaks volumes of what Nintendo achieved.

...oh and where's the music?!

...lastly I decided to attempt to finish Uncharted 4. It's alright I guess. Controls like trying to guide a drunk hooker to the police station but it has its moments I guess. Going off Zelda though........yeah Zelda shames all the other 3rd person games just about.

...English voice overs were a joke.

...laughed at the amount of sexual innuendos.

...laughed at Beedle dialogue. Some great one liners like the stalker comment when you warp around to stock arrows.

...game excelled earlier though, when stamina was an issue. Some of the best moments in the game I thought were trying to reach A to B by ways of climbing--finding a route but being unsure whether or not you'd make it. This deteriorated over the course of the game, however, but it is what I'm referring to in an A to B moment.

Yeah absolutely. I know I might have come off as it being one or the other at the end of my previous post, sorry about that.

I guess my point was that I do enjoy how they went about it here.

Simply saying A to B is kinda vague I suppose. There are instances in this game where a series of tasks is required to meet your greater goal, like with each of the Divine Beasts. I took it like you meant you wanted sections to be gated off, and for overall progression to be forced in a certain order, which is what I don't want. Sure there can still be a great degree of openness, it's been proven in countless games before, but I enjoy the fact that BotW bucks that and just lets you do whatever, whenever.

Definitely man, that's kind of what I'm saying, those are just a few of the countless ways Nintendo could expand on the base of BotW. There are far to few instances of open world games using their spaces to their true potential. Most open world games only touch on the idea while many tasks end up being too localized or samey.

No arguments on that, I just don't see how a stricter structure would be necessary to facilitate extra variety and use of space lol.

Again, I'm on board with a lot of this.

I'd argue that the game naturally offers peaks and valleys in your interaction along the way, no matter which direction you choose. It seems more like we're arguing the theory of how this could go wrong vs. how Nintendo actually pulled it off, and I think they did an amazing job. If I ever went through a relatively quiet stretch of down time, it's because I chose to do so, it's the pace I wanted, I'd purposefully put off tackling larger tasks to take in the world and explore.

Though really, even though they don't force a path on you, it's quite obvious that they litter the game with bread crumbs in an attempt to guide your progress in whatever direction you choose. The world and content placement aren't haphazardly thrown together at random, it's essentially one giant well designed level.

As for the shrine stuff, sure I agree they're too bloated, with some being obvious throw aways. A difficulty arc? Yeah that'd be nice I suppose. Would I personally be willing to sacrifice the open ended nature of the game to have shrines in order? Nah. I see your point though, there is a give and take to it all.

Hmm it changes every now and then.

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Twilight Princess HD
3. Majora's Mask HD
4. Ocarina of Time HD
5. Wind Waker HD

But tomorrow that list would be different. I didn't even think of the 2D Zelda's now but I like those a whole lot too. Maybe A Link Between Worlds would be in 5th.
