That is pretty much how it is for me. I never wanted to buy a Wii U, plus Zelda runs like shit on the Wii U from what I have seen. I pre-ordered a Switch this morning at my local EB Games just for Zelda. I will pick up Mario Odyssey and any other noteworthy titles in the future.

Did they charge you to pre-order or was it free?

Would you rather have had Sony just delay The Last of Us just to make it a PS4 multiplat launch title like Zelda? Just bump it up to 900p and improve it slightly? Hell , they could have dumped the PS3 like a bad habit and pooped out God of War Ascension , Gran Turismo 6 , Puppeteer , and Beyond Two Souls at launch or within the 1st year?

Would that have made everyone feel better about PS4 and PlayStation ?

Why do you think Sony chose to do the former? Why do you think PS4 was still a smash hit so early and things paid off for them? Why do you think devlopers and publishers flocked to the PS4 so early , and in turn were rewarded by consumers? Why do you think Sony was able to hit so early with two notable multi-million selling next gen franchise exclusives (Killzone , inFAMOUS) that took advantage of the new hardware? Why do you think Sony was able to launch with one of the best arcade games of the last 10 years in Resogun? Sounds like notable to me.

Why can't we just accept that Sony did a lot of things right? Sure , maybe they could have pulled one game from PS3 and put it on on PS4 but PlayStation fans were covered either way. And some of those games ended up there remasterd or can be played on PS Now , so even PlayStation noobs are covered.

I'm sure Zelda will be a great game and congrats that it is a launch title on a pretty crappy Switch system , but lets not lose perspective here.

I had just over $100 on an Edge card that I put towards it. I didn't even ask how much you had to put down. I used to work for EB Games many years ago and it used to be $50 for console pre-orders. I don't know what it is now.

Why? What is it doing that is out of the immediate scope of what is and already has been done?

It's a fully open world 3D platformer.

So, because it's open world it's ambitious? Like 500 other games have already done and was the next progressive step for Mario anyway? And what about this game couldn't be done with the Wii U? See, you're relegating these games that could very easily and no doubt were developed for the Wii U originally, to some higher standard because they're attached to its successor.

Like I said, you're honeymooning and giving credit where credit is not due.

When did I say this game couldn't be on Wii U? How many other open world 3D plaformers can you name? Why do you jump to conclusions in an effort to self reinforce your own point predicated on incorrect assumptions made all the time?

The point is, you're praising games that are coming out for a system that could exist in the exact state they do for the Switch on the Wii U, a system you already own. Zelda for example, you people are hailing it in the Switch's favor and almost entirely ignoring its existence for the Wii U, its platform of origin.

You're being ham-stringed into spending another $300 to play games that could identically function on a piece of hardware you presently have, do you not see the insanity in that? Their **** up with the Wii U's hardware, when really there's nothing wrong with it, is costing you $300 so they can present something nearly identical to the market packaged differently in the hope it sells more.

That's why the Switch exists, to make a better Wii U, not because of something innovative or needed, because the other console wasn't selling. And what do they do, they **** everyone who bought the Wii U in the process and say tough luck, it's asinine that you are supporting this as a supposed Nintendo fan, you should be infuriated...

This is an embarrassment to any so called gamer...

I don't think anyone here was saying that the Switch was going to have lousy first-party support. Nintendo more or less delivers in this regard. The real concern is whether or not the system will have a sustainable third-party element, as the lack of that played a hand in the Wii-U's failure, and it doesn't look any more promising with the Switch.

You're excited for Zelda, and I get that, but calm your tits. This system can easily fall into the same trap the Wii-U did.

I think the more important thing here is that Nintendo is already showing off great and ambitious first party games for the Switch- something that was sorely lacking on the Wii U. As for third party support, I imagine it gets a lot of Japanese games, but I doubt it will get much in the way of western support. Honestly at this point, I go into Nintendo expecting that.

I will agree that it's off on good footing in that case. Zelda, Mario and Xenoblade look promising and Splatoon 2 can be great despite Nintendo deciding to charge people for online.

But like any system that you want to last beyond its initial year, you need developers who will actually invest and commit to making games for it outside of the in-house groups. The launch/post-launch lineup thus far looks pretty damn dismal in this case and that you can't deny. The Switch is getting a port of game that's over five years old (Skyrim) and one over four years (Rayman Legends). There's no indication thus far that points towards the system being able to get the same third-party lineup as the One or the PS4 will be getting or already have.

And if we're getting primary Mario and Zelda titles this year, then 2018 could spell out some serious trouble if they don't have a trick or a Metroid announcement up their sleeve.

The cumulative effort of Nintendo's first party should ensure there is never a drought of games on this system, even if Nintendo is the only developer supporting it. I am honestly not worried about that too much.

I think the evidence that it runs worse on Switch came from the impressions piece GS did. But that was playing the game in mobile. So I bet that accounts for the discrepancy... because, indeed, the Switch sounds like it is slightly weaker than a Wii U in mobile, but a fair bit more powerful docked.

I'm excited for Zelda but nope. Zelda isn't even exclusive, it'll be available for the much cheaper Wii U. So that leaves the Switch with no exclusive if you only counting on Zelda.

Not only that but it £20 more expensive on the switch for the same game. the same game!

I bought it for the exclusives as with any console I buy. The hardware is still shit. I wish Nintendo and Sony would release their games on PC like MS. I would be a very happy man. :)

@princeofshapeir: Nintendo did this exact move before. It worked for the GC to Wii Zelda TP transition.

They took the Wii U Zelda game and ported it as Switch launch game. That said, it will be a quality title.

The only thing it has on it is Zelda. PS4 and Xbone had some decent multiplats at launch. What happens if you're someone that's not into Zelda? You're screwed. It's even more sad when you consider you don't even need to buy a Switch to enjoy Zelda.

You should try the Darksiders games as they are definitely inspired by Zelda with a little God of War thrown into the mix. :) Definitely start with Darksiders 1 as it is the better of the two.

If you own a PC, a PS4, and you still bought an Xbox One (weaker and essentially useless), then you probably shouldn't be joking on gamers who own a WiiU and decided to buy a Switch. Just saying lol.

Or is it ok to buy a redundant platform as long as it's from a different company? Where do you draw the line?

The system has five games on launch day. The biggest one, Zelda, is a multiplat with Wii U.

I like Nintendo, but that line up is weak as hell.

Comparing the Switch's launch lineup to the PS4 and Xbox One's makes no sense. When picking between the PS4 and Xbox One you were choosing between a handful of exclusive games that came out each year since the other 90% of the lineup for each console would appear on the other. You knew you were going to get all of the Ubisoft, Activision, Capcom, Square Enix, and EA titles each year.

With the Switch, you're not getting any of those multiplatform titles. You're choosing between Nintendo games and the rest of the gaming industry. It's launching with what looks to be one rock solid title, but then it's library will stay relatively empty while more and more quality games come out on the other two consoles. You've chosen to isolate yourself from the majority of the industry to stay loyal to Nintendo.

The only person you're depriving of good games is yourself. This is why Nintendo's consoles can never be your primary game console. They miss out on too many games.

Zelda being a "multiplat" with the other system having a little over 10 million users, most of whom have either sold or abandoned the console. People act like a majority of the people who hold some interest in the Switch actually bought a Wii U.

Who else would it appeal too? Certainly not people who enjoy games by the majority of game publishers and developers out there.

The Switch, like the Wii U, appeals to hardcore Nintendo fans. Buying it means limiting yourself to the relatively small library of Nintendo games that come out each year.

I think the launch lineup is weak for sure, but honestly all i need is Zelda. Then one month later we get MK8:D, i am assuming a few months after that we get splatoon 2 in the summer. Then Xeno 2 in fall possibly, round out the year with Mario for holidays? Seems like a decent year.

Add in Skyrim and the other games sprinkled throughout the year and i say it's a good start.

notable Switch launch titles:

  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild

just look at those amazing PS4/XB1 games. real system sellers right there lol.

do people really care about having a slew of shit games on their new console as opposed to one amazing game? i guess zelda on switch isn't as appealing if you're still holding on to a wii u, but the obvious advantage on switch is improved visuals and being able to play it on the go. if you're a smart person like me and got rid of your wii u, breath of the wild is quite literally the best launch title for a console since... twilight princess?

it's just hypocritical that people are railing against the switch and its $300 price tag when they were happy to pay $400 and $500 to play a handful of shitty games and cross-gen ports.

I'd say just looking at the YouTube reveal video that more people were interested in the Switch than they ever were with the Wii U. I'm not saying all these will translate into sales, they certainly won't. Yet, the Switch, at least had an advantage over the Wii U with how it was perceived among other things. While Nintendo certainly botched the presentation, nobody can be certain whether or not third parties will flee after a few months or the first year or if they will find it successful enough to support it. Breath of the Wild and Odyssey have already brought in old and new Nintendo fans that either disliked many of the choices Nintendo made with its games or were never interested in them to try.

Nintendo definitely has the best first party support. But, I don't agree with them charging for online. Nickel and diming your customers is a terrible anti-consumer practice, but, people want their insta-fix, so they bend over and pay.

Was the original Xbox's launch lineup also weak?

If you own a PC, a PS4, and you still bought an Xbox One (weaker and essentially useless), then you probably shouldn't be joking on gamers who own a WiiU and decided to buy a Switch. Just saying lol.

Or is it ok to buy a redundant platform as long as it's from a different company? Where do you draw the line?

The XB1 was worth buying prior to the Play Anywhere initiative. How else was I going to play Forza 5, 6, Horizon 2, Halo MCC, Halo 5, Sunset Overdrive?

@PikminWorld: Well the Switch is a more interesting concept than the WiiU. Even I thought it was originally a cool design.

For 3rd party games, each Switch version of the game is going to cost a lot of extra cash to develop since the architecture is so different, specs are so low, and you have to develop the game with a mobile spec in mind (even lower power and smaller interface). That means the majority of major franchises would need their own branch of Switch games since porting directly from the PS4/Xbox One is basically out of the question. Unless the thing somehow takes off (and the lack of 3rd party support is going to hurt its ability to sell well), I doubt 3rd parties are going to stay interested.

Without the 3rd party support, the Switch is going to suffer lower sales. I doubt we'll ever seen another fluke like the original Wii ever again.

@Heil68: what did you think of the new Zelda and Mario games?

Mario looks great and Zelda always performs. I had Switch in my cart at Amazon and ready to pre-order, but I stayed the course and will wait for the library to build up top games I must play.

What do you think of the pay online?

I think it's a super dumb move, and I will not pay beyond $20-$30 a year for it.

Ugh Zelda is the best game of the bunch but Switch's launch lineup is still really bad, I was expecting more games like Yooka-Laylee, Skyrim, Smash Bros Melee on VC, Mario Kart, and the Rabbids RPG but all we get is one game to hold us over for several months...Zelda and Mario are the only games I would plan on buying the first year and that is not enough to justify a console purchase.

I shouldn't have read all those rumors, they only gave me false hope. Nintendo better have some good surprises for E3 this year.

If you actually watch the initial PS4 announcement, it wasn't all that different in terms of content. Sure it was a better presentation, but what was actually there was quite similar. Explain hardware, show sizzle reels of games, put up a picture of developer logos who want to support the PS4. Then they have 1 good exclusive on day 1. Looks pretty identical to the Switch.

My main point is that we should wait until E3 for them to announce the entire lineup of their first year and see how things are shaping up. Sure it isn't amazing, but it does have 1 massive game on day one.

Well ps4 had Resogun too, its an amazing game.

I will pick up the switch at launch. I love Zelda games, beaten Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past dozens of times. I want Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Delux, new Mario 3D, and Dragonquest. I don't like that the online will be free, then they will charge at a later date. It's a bait and "switch" tactic. I don't want to pay to play online on ps4 and Switch both, it's a crappy idea by Nintendo. Thanks to the xbox fanboys, pay to play online is on every console.

Im more concerned with the fact that in 2017 Nintendo still cant produce a system that has noticeably better visuals then a 360/PS3.
