Okami, 3D Dot Heroes. 3D Dot Heroes revived a styIe of Zelda that died when the N64 came out.Died when the N64 came out? Sure, if you dont count handhelds.
And as much as i love the idea of 3D Dot Game Heroes, the level design just wasnt there.
I love the idea, the music and the nostalgia heavy presentation, but yeah, the execution fell short (and i'm not even putting it next to Zelda standards here).
As for Okami, again, i love this game and i hate pointing out its flaws, but yeah, its Zelda-lite with a charming and fresh art****premise.
At its core, it doesnt Out-Zelda Zelda. Butits a pretty damn good game anyway
More recently, Darksiders tried to be like Zelda...and failed. We got another GOW clone instead.
There are a few Zelda-type games out there, and there should be more. A major reason why Zelda has barely changed over the last decade is because it has little competition. More games = more improvements.foxhound_fox
First, lets put things into perspective. No one complained about Zelda being "stale", outdated or whatever, before TP. NO ONE, and i'm including the dedicated press here.
Ocarina was what it was. Majora was loved by its "strangeness" and WW was considered a stylistic trailblazer. It took one game, TP, for this odd bunch of people to come out of the woodwork proclaiming that the series "needs a rest", or a "reboot". Or that they should turn Zelda into Shadow of the Colossus/ICO (WTF people lol).
The funny thing is that those who werent praising MM and WW were too busy crying and moaning that Nintendo wasnt giving them another one just like OOT. Nintendo gives them a Ocarina 2 and now its an outdated, "rehashed" IP.
And Zelda barely changed over a decade? There have been 3 main console Zeldas in 10 years. Tell me how much 3 entries of a well known franchise need to be different from each other in order to NOT be considered stale?
Should i look at God of War 1, 2 and 3 as a role model? Gears 1, 2 and 3? Uncharted 1, 2 and 3? Maybe Killzone or GTA... Ratchet and Clank?
I'd say MM, WW and TP have more distinct, individual identities than any of the sequels i mentioned above.
So, i ask, whats the problem with Zelda?
