Seeing how you aren't a story driven person you wouldn't know, at least not figuring out why. Gameplay is more important, but a good story helps too. As you can see many games nowadays focus a lot on story with cutscenes and all to tell one so it's obvious the games are doing this because the devs made it that way and gamers will follow the story too. Story also helps enjoyment too and immersed players in the gaming world the same way books and movies do. People enjoy games differently from one another so while some don't care for it it's obvious that story can help others and a great one can make people play the game more to see what happens next even though people obviously play it for the gameplay. People want to know what happens to characters the same way in movies and books so it's obvious that the story makes it so that you want to keep playing.
Also, it's better for backlogs. As fun as it is to fight, shoot, and explore in multiplayer, those are for just enjoyment which is a great thing but it does get in the way of backlogs with story driven games. If I played more Tekken or Battlefield, my other games won't get done. With campagins, unless the game is terrible, you'll have a point to play it for more than just enjoyment like you do for no story and multiplayer in games: It's to experience what happens in the timeline of the characters. With stories you can have the same enjoyment of playing just for fun and to be entertained by how the story flows, so that's a win-win in that area.
Gaming has changed and so has various gamers. I care more about gameplay, it's why I also play games with no stories, but I would love a story too because games are trying to do more as well. Like I said people are different, enjoy games differently and they enjoy what's given to them. If a story is good, they'll enjoy it, in fact, it can help them like the game more because they know how much care the devs went into making the game, at least on a story front. Story can also increase replay value too if there are alternate paths and endings. People have a right to care about the story in games due to how the games are now, but they should always care about gameplay more. Â
Also, why do you think so many characters get talked about? Because of their actions for what they did in the games.Â
