That's very disappointing if it will have less. A sequel should not have less characters than its predecessor. If that's true, then there will be less stages too. Then again, I am not sure if Nintendo would actually do that.

They're gimping the Wii-U version of Smash Brothers so it can work on 3DS apparently. Link's on the Nintendo Direct thread in System Wars.

I gotta say, I am kinda livid right now. The idea that the fourth Smash Brothers is going to have less characters than Brawl (and maybe even less stages if they plan on having the same amount of stages in both versions as well).  Right now, I do not think I can see myself ponying up 60 damn bucks to buy a gimped Smash Brothers.

We'll see how it goes. At least no more tripping. :PEnforcedspot

If they're gonna try the "less is more" approach with the character roster, then it better be a very balanced character roster.

For example, they could start by making Ganondorf actually unique (as in, not a POS version of Captain Falcon) and useful. :P

On SSB4's roster: If I had to guess who's getting tweaked or even cut, it'd be the ones that are highly effective/ineffective in small areas or the ones that are difficult to control. I'm no professional Smasher, but Ness and Lucas sound like they'd fit the bill here just because of their Up+B. Personally, I can't aim with the damn thing and, if used as a recovery move, I'd imagine it's too slow to use against good players without getting hit in mid-air.

I already get a 10-sec lead on the MK7 AI on Mirror -with- blue shells. >.> Wouldn't mind if they're removed from multi-player where races are much closer or if the AI were much tougher though.

on smash's roster: honestly, i felt like a third of brawl's roster could be cut off and i wouldn't miss them. a lot of characters need overhauls (ganondorf, if he even stays playable, what with akum-- demise being the big bad guy in skyward sword) as well. honestly, i don't mind a smaller roster. i have a hard time believing my favorites will be dropped (lucas might, though... but i wouldn't complain as long as ness stole his moveset), so i really don't care.

as for mario kart, blue shells are an item that makes absolutely no sense. you can only get it when you're on the last position or close to), which is the last place you'll ever need to attack the first position and the first position alone. it doesn't help the person that needs help, and it unfairly screws up the guy that's ahead. only situation where it makes sense is, like you said, single player, where essentially everyone is already working together to take you down anyway.

Every part after the lanayru mine was super-awesome. Not that the parts before that weren't (Earth Temple was great too), but the game just never dropped momentum after Earth Temple was done.

i like the character art they're using. looks like the SNES drawings.

New Mario looks great.

The new Smash Brothers' game play looks faster; it reminds me of Melee.

As for the roster: the only way I could see a reduced roster working out is if they focus on making more out of less. I mean make it more balanced and less clones.

• Ganondorf - He is in danger. He is a lot like Captain Falcon, so one of two things are going to happen to him: he is going to be replaced by Demise or he is going to see a major overhaul in terms of moveset.
• Toon Link - Like with Young Link, there is no reason to have Toon Link in this game due to his irrelevance (granted Wind Waker is being redone), and I think he is going to be cut and replaced with an entirely different character: Giraham
• Falco - They changed his moveset up some in Brawl, but he is still an awful lot like Fox.  Either he is going to be changed or just cut and not replaced.
• Wolf - Definitely gone. It was dumb to have him in the first place; so many more worthy characters
• Lucus - I cannot see Ness being cut since he is one of the original 12, so he is gone. I think Shulk is replacing him.

Now let's look at Brawl's two third-party guests:

• Sonic - Before it was announced that the roster was getting trimed instead of expanded, I thought for sure Sonic would make a return because Sega was already making Sonic Wii-U exclusives. But now it has been said that Mega Man might be one of the only third party characters in the game now. I think a Namco character is replacing him (Namco is co-developing the game, just in case anyone here forgot or did not know that).
• Snake - Megaman is replacing him.

• Ice Climbers - As an Ice Climbers user, I really do not want to see this happen. Fortunately, they are very unique and Nintendo may spare them because of that
• R.O.B. -  R.O.B. was Brawl's random and silly character; now Wii Fit Trainer is that character.
• Lucario - He did not even have that much relevance in 2008. No reason to bring this guy back if you're cutting the fat.
• Marth - I am not familiar with Fire Emblem, but hasn't Ike since replaced Marth in the franchise? However, Marth was the first character from Fire Emblem to appear in Smash Brothers (and quite possibly may have subsequently brought the franchise to America because of that), so I do not think he will be cut.
• Mr. Game & Watch - Not unthinkable to see him gone.

• Ganondorf (Demise just isn't as well known yet).
• Falco - Too popular to be cut.
• Ice Climbers - They'll get rid of Brawl characters before they start gutting Melee premiering characters.
• Mr. Game & Watch
• Marth - Too popular

• Lucus - Shulk will replace him. I have no particular reason for saying Lucus in exchange for Shulk except that they're both from RPGs. :P But I do think will be gone.
• Toon Link - Giraham replaces him.
• Sonic - Pac-Man takes his place as a third party characters.
• Snake - Megaman takes his place as a third party character.
• R.O.B. - Wii Fit Trainer takes his place as the random, silly character.

marth isn't going anywhere. he's THE fire emblem dude. fire emblem is kinda like final fantasy, each game taking place in its own universe, but marth's universe keeps showing up every now and then (including in fire emblem awakening). ike on the other hand, might be replaced by chrom while keeping the moveset (so just a reskin).

the animal crossing villager sounds a lot like Mr. Game and Watch, so he might replace him.

*lucas, not lucus. i like him more than ness, because his moves are actually decent.

*girahim, not giraham. i don't see him replacing toon link, who's essentially young link from melee. if he's in, he's in on his own.

pacman better not show up.

lucario might be replaced by whatever new pokemon they want to promote. preferrably something that plays somewhat similar. he's one of my favorites in brawl, but i don't imagine he'll stick around.

wolf had a pretty different moveset from fox/falco. tweak him to be even more different (read: that final smash makes no sense) and i can see him staying.

On SSB4 clones: Just a guess, but I recall Sakurai saying there'll be more customization this time around. Perhaps you'll be able to change the properties of attacks. Say you want Fox to have Falco's B and Wolf's Side+B, you can do that. Eliminates the need for clones.

Oh, and Tharja will replace Lucario.
