TRIPLE H VS JOHN CENA:
DALLAS – It may be difficult to fathom, but up until 10:41 p.m. EST within the confines of the American Airlines Center, Triple H, 12-time World Champion and current reigning WWE Champion, had never, in all his years, defeated his Night of Champions opponent, John Cena.
All that changed, however, when The King of Kings capitalized with a Pedigree to earn the victory and retain his prized WWE gold.
"You'll never be as good as me," a confident champion told Cena in the weeks leading up to Night of Champions.
For his part, Cena could take solace knowing that it was he who defeated Triple H at WrestleMania XXIII, when The Game tapped out under the pressure of the STFU.
This time around, though, Triple H would not be denied. As the capacity crowd looked on, the two powerhouses showcased their impressive strength, trading rattling maneuvers and struggling free from intenseholds before The King of Kings was finally able to overcome his nemesis.
By retaining the WWE Championship, Triple H, drafted from Raw to SmackDown the week prior, deprived his former brand a title to call their own. Earlier in the evening, Edge also denied Raw the World Heavyweight Title by defeating Batista, a recent Raw recruit, and ECW's Mark Henry captured that brand's title by prevailing against both Big Show and former ECW Champion Kane in a Triple Threat Match.
While Triple H may have won this round, rest assured that John Cena will not rest until he once again possesses the WWE Championship and brings it home to Raw.
EDGE VS BATISTSA
DALLAS – World Heavyweight Champion Edge made sure that Batista's apparent last chance at the title was unsuccessful, sending The Animal to his new home on Raw without the gold with the help of SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero.
The Rated-R Superstar's victory at Night of Champions evidently puts an end to the nearly year-long rivalry with The Animal – a rivalry that saw the Ultimate Opportunist victorious over Batista each time they faced each other with the gold hanging in the balance. Unable to overcome the odds against him, The Animal now moves to Monday Night's empty-handed – though he gave all he had to unseat Edge.
Despite having four stitches in his head from a devastating head-to-head collision with Edge this past week on Raw, Batista appeared poised to win his fourth World Heavyweight Championship, and to finally defeat the Rated-R Superstar, but it was not to be. After a spinebuster seemingly sealed the win for Batista, Vickie Guerrero stopped the referee's count by grabbing his foot, keeping Edge's championship reign alive.
It was then that Edge knocked out referee Mickie Henson, and Vickie brought out Chavo Guerrero as the special guest referee. As Chavo strolled out, Batista got his hands on Vickie, hoping to punish her for the months of anguish she has caused him. The Animal threw Vickie Guerrero over the top rope, but his back was turned to Edge, who used his gold across the already weakened skull of Batista to steal the win.
Now, Edge will return to SmackDown with the gold around his waist, having eliminated one of the biggest threats to his championship stronghold. The Rated-R Superstar and his bride-to-be already systematically eliminated Undertaker from WWE, and with Batista moving to Raw, who will be brave enough to challenge the World Heavyweight Champion, his powerful fiancée and the rest of "The Family"?
MARK HENRY VS BIG SHOW VS KANE
DALLAS – Similar to what the Land of the Extreme endured at the 2007 Draft, this year's Draft took the ECW Championship away from his home brand, as Kane was drafted to Raw. At Sunday's Night of Champions, however, the gold returned in the form of new ECW Champion Mark Henry when he pinned the Big Red Machine in their Triple Threat Match.
A late addition to the ECW Title Match, the World's Strongest Man had persuaded General Manager Theodore Long to give him a championship opportunity, which the WWE Universe saw in an AT&T Mobile exclusive video. In one of his first major moves since arriving on Tuesday nights, Long made it a Triple Threat Match for the gold.
Less than one day after Henry's meeting with Long, he was randomly selected by ECW in the Supplemental Draft. It didn't take him long to make some waves in the Extreme brand.
Kane and Big Show's rivalry has been heating up for months, but it has always been overshadowed by Henry, who forced his way into the picture with numerous attacks on the Big Red Machine, and a victory against him on ECW. Henry's undying hunger for the ECW Championship has earned him a place atop of the Land of the Extreme and should help to keep him there for a long time.
When Henry's opportunity came, he made the most of it at Night of Champions. Kane suffered a knee injury early on in the contest, leaving him outside of the ring for much of the match. After regaining his strength, the Big Red Machine put everything he had left into throwing Big Show off the top turnbuckle, leaving both giants involved in the maneuver gasping on the canvas. Henry quickly capitalized with a splash and a three-count to become ECW Champion.
