I too am being tired of being called the 'N-Word' and crap like that from wanna-be's on LIVE, but according to laws, people have the right to say anything over the headset. This rule can sometimes be a problem, but headsets also have good purposes, like in tactic games and such.

Me too. Normally I cannot stand Adam Sessler, but I completely agree with him. That's the main reason why I don't play multi-player games on XBL other than Uno.

I agree with him completely. I was one of those people that actually wanted to be able to play online with my console for years and have voice chat and be able to do all the positive things that make it worthwhile. Now, after having played on one year pre-paid because of my brother buying it as a gift, I refuse to get a Gold subscrip anymore. I refuse to be part of you racist **** and having you yell my ear off when I'm trying to **** play. Now I find myself actively avoiding games with online components, and especially those with online-only achievements. I don't care that there is supposed to be a way to mute these people; it doesn't help if you have to basically have to step out of the action and spend more than a minute looking for how to shut them up. And it particularly stings with Xbox LIVE, since you are actually expected to pay for the priviledge of gaming with these loudmouthed, bigotist bastards spewing out tasteless trash talk just to grow their e-cocks.

Yes, I too have tired of these guys who think they're all badtitude online and make those kind of comments. (Those are usually the guys I aim for. Sometimes I don't even care if I lose the match, I just want to find and shoot up the guy over and over just to annoy him.) I don't watch X-Play anymore because they've strayed way too far from what they once were, though Sess has got a good point. (I plan to launch an Unreal Tournament 2003 server sooner or later, and I plan to make a rule against this stuff. If I see it, they get warned. See it again, they get banned by CD key.)

It never bothers me because I never hear it, I'm always in P/C with a friend when I'm on live, the times i'm not, well anyone can tell you that people in CoD4 don't ever talk. And the times I slip up, it's because I'm trashed and i'm calling my friend next to me on the couch a whatever, and I either don't have or forgot I had my headset on. But I can see his point, if I was in a game and some 10 year old was running his mouth, yeah, i'd be annoyed. Oh wait, thats why I despised Halo 2 online so much, and ditched live altogether until Gears came out . . .

Sessler?! Not sarcastic??? Where's the jokes?

EDIT: Anyways, it really isn't that much of a problem. I honestly haven't heard too many offensive things on Xbox Live, and if I do, I'm most likely the one to have started it. And I won't change my ways either. Sessler forgot the first rule of the internet...

I agree with everything he said, not that any of it was news to me. I liked this part:

That's not how you're shocking. You're shocking by turning a clever phrase, not by throwing a bunch of hideous racist and homophobic slurs at anyone within earshot.

Sessler

Of course, people being loud-mouthed jerks is endemic to the entire online experience. Peoples' interupt between their brain and mouth vanishes when there are no consequences. In the real world, there's consequences: Getting fired from a job, getting thrown out of a store, or getting your nose broken. The worst thing that happens to anyone online is they get a forum account suspended, and it's not like there's a shortage of forums.

I don't really hear that much of this stuff when I play on Live. Pretty much the only thing I do play is Team Fortress. I've always held up its community as a bastion of maturity and a model for the more popular games to follow. Sessler's video only supports this belief in my mind.

Interesting video.

I have my own theory on why people behave this way however.

As Adam Sessler said, he was called a pretty offensive word by someone who sounded like they were 10 years old. 10. Now think about that for a second. That 10 year old probably lives with their parents or some other form of guardian. They're also undoubtedly a minor. Kids tend to rebel against conventional standards that adults and society as a whole consider to be ethical and moral. Either perhaps as a way of getting back, or, here's a good one, it's been pent up in them so long they release it when no one's looking on people online, due to the internet's ability to have you remain "anonymous", as was said.

Now imagine a kid like that saying those things to their mother. They would get a spanking right quick or some other form of punishment. I'd rather not delve into the issue of parenting, but I feel parents these days have gotten really soft. This behavior typically goes unnoticed by the parent, and once they find out they can get away with it, they'll keep doing it. It's well known fact. It's like a criminal: They find they can get away with a crime at the time, they'll keep doing it because they know they won't be caught.

I won't go out of my way to say it's all young kids either doing this, I've heard some pretty nasty talk from 18 year olds, 21 year olds, even people as old as 30, on Xbox Live. These are the people who are supposed to be setting an example for the young people - oh, they're REALLY setting a good example alright. I wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones causing these kids to do this. It's like saying a racial slur to a young child - you keep saying it in their presence, they'll repeat you later.

At the same time, generalizing all 10 year olds or whatever demographic they are, as ALL like that, is also wrong. This also breeds offensive language, especially in a competitive environment such as online gaming. Which brings me to the whole issue of online gaming: It's not just Xbox Live. It never was. Though the video was about Xbox Live in particular, he made mention of PC gaming, and sadly it's true - it happens just as much with PC gaming and with any other console play I would imagine. Probably even more so with PC gaming, just in a different form. Not everyone may have a headset, but I assure you everyone has a keyboard, and will use that as their insultive weapon.

This is exactly part of the reason I got out of Xbox Live and online gaming in general a while back. If you try to make intelligent conversation with anyone out there, probably 75% of the time they're going to be one of these people. It's a sad but true fact. If I ever do online gaming, I remain totally silent.

Either way, good video, and good post. Brings up a good discussion on a serious issue.

Normally I would call Adam Sessler a complete douche bag and dismiss everything he says but I agree with what he has said here. To all the people who said they dont play on live because of all the loud mouth kids you should do what I did and join a really good clan, it really made things alot better not only do I play with mature people but after a while you get to know people and they feel like real friends. It completly changed my entire outlook on XBL.

I don't think he singled it out. He started with it to have a specific example and a frame of reference. If you listen to his wording, he starts with XBL but references online in general.

Well, i'm English and i get a lot of **** on Xbox live. Xbox live is the main culprit, but only because it comeswith voice chat so easily accessible with the inclusion of the headset in the box. I'm not saying we don't give it back because i also hear English kids being racist and ignorant. To be honest, i don't often go on live anymore because im sick of it in general.

The thing that starts grinding my proverbial gears is... With Sony, Nintendo, and (most) online computer gaming, playing online is free. Yet with Xbox Live, we have to pay to play online. Now, I don't know about you, but if I suddenly have to pay for something that a competitor would provide for free, I would reasonably expect that pay-for element would be held up to a higher standard, such as providing (dedicated) server capability and more mature players. With Xbox LIVE now, we get neither of those things. We have to host our own servers, or peer together for online play, which is horrendously bad for lag, and then we have to deal with loud mouth **** who I'd be more inclined to shoot on sight than ever let them in my house to play video games with me. So what the **** Microsoft? What are you going to do about this?

Perhaps this an issue that affects people differently. For me, the ranting and unsound chatter you find whilst gaming on live has no affect on me. I could care less, what is said to me and moreover, who is saying it. I'll be damn*d if I'm going to let a few mindless idiots hinder my experience while I'm on live.

As a female gamer, I retain my fair-share of comments from boisterous 12 yr. olds that have probably never even touched a woman, but it doesn't bother me. They can call me a b*tch or any other profanity they can conjure up within their joke of a vocabulary, but it will not force me to waiver or completely check my character at the door and reply to such things.

These types of individuals, are seeking to invoke anger from you, why give them the satisfaction of acknowledging they successfully did so. This is life! There will always be some uneducated drone, whether it be on live or in your day to day life, that will seek, to bring you down to their level and for the life of me, I'll never understand why people let them do so.

This is the main reason I rarely use a headset during online play UNLESS I'm in a party of friends, I'm in private chat or if there is a chance the players might not act like idiots. I play games like RBSV2 (and similiar games that wouldn't appeal to young'uns) a good bit because you NEVER find them on. Mainly becuase they only pick up on the huge, hyped games.

CoD 4, Halo 3, Gears of War (although, that's gotten better) and GTA IV are ones to avoid.

I think we can all agree that public forum + open mic = smacktard

So let's turn this discussion into something a little more constructive. What do you do to handle it? I think one of the worse things you can do is give in and not game online anymore. The signal that sends to the offenders is that their tactics actually work. They got a rise out of you and forced you offline.

I would think it more useful to use the tools MS provides us:

  • Mute
  • Feedback
  • Prefer/avoid status - people may think these things (including Mute and Feedback) are a hassle. But if you don't use it, your chances of meeting up with the same smacktards over and over again stay the same.
  • Friends list - you have to understand that if you go into random matches, it's a roll of the dice as to whom you play with. Try to stick to your friends list. In fact, there are plenty of unions on this very forum that regularly play together. That's a great way to build up your friends list. Just check out the message boards on any of the major gaming sites.

Using these items, I have rarely run into bad apple in the past couple years.

Any other suggestions?

not a big fan of adam sessler... he always seemed a bit odd to me, but I tolerate him because I love xplay. Thank god someone with some sort of mouthpiece said this... good for him.

A new found respect for adam sessler. I also do not want to be lumped in with these idiots.

I agree with everything he said, not that any of it was news to me. I liked this part:

That's not how you're shocking. You're shocking by turning a clever phrase, not by throwing a bunch of hideous racist and homophobic slurs at anyone within earshot.

Seriously... A witty comment > anything. Nothing shuts someone up quite like a quick whiff of intelligence once and a while.
