Am i the only one that remember GameBoy Color? That was like Epic when it came out. Now we have these over priced games that are supposed to be "Like You're There" Honestly, if we were to get anymore high def than this we would have to be litterally in the game, and with the games i play i don't want that to happen.

I love the classics. I still play GTA 2 where it's still in a birds eye view, and every now and then i like to break out the Tony Hawk Pro Skater for my Playstation1 which somehow still works. I can't believe we have to pay $60 for some of these newer games, it's getting to be a little ridiculous. So, has the whole "HD" Thing gone a little too far?

No... I don't think so. The first time I saw some of my 360 and ps3 games in HD my jaw dropped and I wanted to dance like a little school girl...

I actually was thinking how amazing SFIV looks in HD. Just the opening video was incredible. Sure games maybe to expensive but that is why a lot of consumers wait for price drops and such.

Man I remember getting my gameboy color for the first time. Christmas day, blue gameboy color with pokemon blue. It was so awesome, trying to raise my charmander into charizard and stuff like that. It was a blast. But that was back in the pokemon craze, not happening anymore.

I agree. Team Fortress has a unique look too it. I think that HD gaming is important, as in Team Fortress has a simple style too it, but is rendered crisply and clearly.

games today are $60 for a reason - we're not paying for GBC games now are we?

I understand where TC is coming form on this. While I love the HD, almost cinema-like games like Gears, there is something to be said about the cheaper and simple games. I can still be just as entertained by Super Mariio World, an $8 game on the Wii, as I am with a $60 game. I'm not worried abotu it though. We have seen a resurgence in simple 2d and retro games, like Mega Man 9. Also, there will always be a market for those games on handheld consoles.

comparing GameboyColor to 360?? Maybe GBC compared to PSP pal, not 360. Maybe compare N64 or SNES to 360 and even those were around $50 back then. I believe some N64 games were up to $70. So seriously what are you complaining for? Because you have no money to buy games and just have games from 10 years ago that people bought for you so you play those? I like those games too but if you really think playing those games are any where near the level of games you get on the next-gen systems and 360, your crazy. Realize games have ALWAYS released with a price around this $60. There's usually sales on a lot of the games and you can get them for $40. Those classic games are sooo many years old so you get them for 10 bucks, in 10 years you can get 360 games for a dollar too.

No. Not for PC gamers anyway. I wanted console titles such as Burnout 3 and FarCry Instincts to come to the PC just to play in a tighter resolution.

With the newer HD consoles, that is no longer an issue. Gamers win! :)

Sonny, i don't know where the hell you where getting n64 games for $70... eBay? bad idea

But heres another point if you are all like "snar snar snar wtf"

We Spend HELLS OF LOADS of money for all of this technology, guess who doesn't even have water filters? Or Law enforcments? Hospitals? So, here's my plan. XBOX 360 is nice, its a good way to relax, but if we stopped making XBOXs and Playstations and started using some of that money, and trust me if we stopped playing XBOX there would be a **** load of money left over, we could spend some of that on the people who dont even have clean water. Honestly i love my XBOX 360, i love gaming, i love doing nothing all day, but in a few months, (when i get all my **** together in this country) I am going down to africa to help the locals with getting clean water and teaching them about health and safey.. yeah.. All that extra pocket change that goes into making HD **** could be greatly used for other people, and people in africa would greatly appreciate the donation, trust me. I mean, just think about all the money you would still have if we just sticked with n64 or playstation 1.

PS: We could still use the XBOXs that we've already made, but stop the production of more XBOXs and Playstations. I wouldn'ts want to make anyone cry by running into their house and stealing their xbox, that ****s expensive.

Don't forget that Game Boy games cost $30 when they were new, just like DS games do now. SNES games back in the day were $50. I'll chalk up that extra $10 to inflation and say the cost of hi-def isn't really that much.

Well, i'll give you that, but if stuck with the simple pixels the game costs would have gone down. I mean its like every 2 years we have some new fantastic console. That means new types of games, plus the manufacturing of the old games, that means making games up the ass, which means things will become out of date, old games will stop being made because people are all about new games and the new games will make all the money. If we kept buying old games we wouldn't have to spend money on the new console to play the new games, and we could just keep our little set up and spend the $20 to $30 on older games. I mean we only pay so much for these games because we're willing to. If nobody bought the games the prices would go down.

I think it has run out of places to go, a little like Hollywood but on a smaller scale. That may be why we're seeing more revivals of past games. I believe that the game studios are forcing each into though, a bit like the keeping up with the Jones' idea.

Not gonna happen in capitalist America. The Western World is about consumerism. And besides, there are other industries we could cut funding to in order to get money for the third world other than HD gaming. I mean, that's kinda a small niche industry. And I think it's kinda sad to see technology grind to a halt for that reason when money could come from other sources.

You can say that about any consumer luxury. As long as Americans are not living in high-rise biodome filing cabinents, do have any sort of entertainment, and are producing any sort of art, then yeah, those are resources that we could have given away to the third world. Except...not really. You're proceeding under the assumption that there are a finite number of resources available in the US (or any first-world country), and if we're using them for something here, that's money that could have been spent abroad. The economy is much more complicated than that. If everyone in the US stopped buying home electronics, and just gave all that money to Africa, thousands of people in many countries would suddenly be out of jobs. Tax revenues would decrease, and government foreign aid packages would decrease markedly. I've only had an introduction to economics at a college level, so I don't really claim to understand all this, but I know it's not anywhere near as simple as you're making it out to be.

There's also the notion (that I accept) that videogames are a form of art, and part of our cultural heritage. Instead of writing The Illiad, Homer could have gone and done humanitarian work in Asia Minor.

EDIT: Oh, right. I forgot to answer the thread creator's question. No, I don't think HD is going too far. I like games to look as good as they can.

We arent playing GBC games anymore. The way i see it is that we are paying 60$ because we are getting more than on a handheld game. Console games now have bigger levels, are longer, look better, have multiplayer most of the time. Oh and you can also blame inflation.

A friend of mine made an interesting point about this. He said that there'd be a point in which video games will become parallel to life. The line between video game and reality will be blurred so much that it'll lead to debates whether killing a man in a video game constitutes killing a man in real life. Kinda crazy, but not too far-fetched, when you put some thought into it.

That's a little scary. I had a friend who said something like that. He said that somewhere in the near future, people will get tired of just killing people in games, so they'll make arenas and you can kill people in the arena just like a video game, but it's totally legal. Like you take a bunch of inmates on death row and use them as the enemies, and then you get to kill them, but they can still kill you. He was stoned when he said that... but the government has down some pretty **** up things to inmates in the past....

well stick to the wii then and stay away from xbox, simple hd will never go too far, they wont be a day where people dont want more realistic graphics. look at cgi cut scenes. will be a great day when we get graphics like that during gameplay in the next 10 years gameboy colour wasnt that groundbreaking, it was the last hand held to even get colour, i remember gamegear and the lynx had full colour while the gameboy was just yellow and black spectrum style monocrome graphics

i think we can blame HD on the cut scenes from final fantasy. Final Fantasy was a little ahead of its time when number 8 came out.

HD gone too far? I think not. The Wii is not HD, and House of the Dead: Overkill is $59.99 at EBgames where I live. The cost of a game has nothing to do with the graphic quality. Sorry, but I completely disagree with everything you have said.

Well you have to consider too how much time and money they put into these games. You also have to remember that games are a buisness, and thats will always be the sad truth.

Wow, im surprised someone actually posted a thread like this...cause they beat me to it :P I really, really do miss the Gameboy Pocket and the Gameboy color and its sad to see these things obsolete. Especially the N64 cause that system was very epic to me and probably brings back the most memories out of any system I've ever had. I mean even though you can buy games from the N64 from the Wii..it isnt the same as I really loved the cartridges the N64 had. Man, don't get me wrong though, I love HD and the kind of graphics we have now, but I always think about the old days that gave me the memories I have now. Now the closest things I have to bring those memories back will be the DS as they sorta have N64 graphics and have games that are remakes and most importantly, Pokemon! but I also have the Wii to buy any awesome games from the N64 era that I've missed!

Yeah but we said that when the xbox came out. "IT CANT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS"

and then we said "THE NEXT GENERATION IS GONNA FEEL LIKE YOU'RE IN THE GAME".

Now we already said both of those things to the 360 and PS3. There will always be more and more advanced technologies coming out. At this point it is far far far far from reality

What is wrong with that? I've been waiting for them to come out with virtual reality forever. I'm beginning to think I won't live long enough to see it, though. :(

I think they made a movie about virtually reality gaming, it was called "Stupid teenagers get a virtual reality game, it breaks, then they all die from the virtual zombies becoming real." The future holds technology that we want to see, but that doesn't mean it's going to work.

The problem lies with so many developers using pretty graphics as an excuse to churn out lackluster games. I'm not saying that games like Crysis have lackluster gameplay, but I've never heard anything positive about that game that didn't relate to visuals. You can talk about UE3's graphical power all you want, but we've all seen how flawed that engine is when it comes to data streaming and other tech factors that are the real make-or-break aspects. Apart from being a much more satisfying entertainment experience, the gameplay a.k.a. actual involvment is what seperates video games apart from motion pictures.

I hate spending $50-60 bucks for video games! I wish they were all at least $40 bucks max. Not one game I've played felt like its worth $50 nor $60 dollars. Its too much.

There is often sales on games after the games been out a couple months. Like this week Mortal Kombat is only $40 at Target, they had the same deal at Toys R Us a couple months ago, many others. Just check the local ads and wait for something good.

I would not point to inflation for the $60 XBOX games. You would have a better change arguing for the added content, but I remember my old Coleco Vision games being $45 to $50 and this was back in the early 1980's. Games have been around this price, with a few exceptions*, for what...20 years?

*Phantasy Star IV for the Genesis was over $100

*Chrono Trigger for the Super Nintendo was close to $80.

*Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo was around $60 to 70$.

in all honesty paying 60 bucks for a game is the same as what we payed for ps1 games back in the day..u have to factor in inflation and with that we're paying the same amount we did 10 years ago and i played my gameboy color the other day and stopped after 2 mins...HD all the way

I kind of understand where the OP is coming from.

HOWEVER, I don't mind paying the 60 bucks if it's for a game I KNOW will be amazing to play in HD. (Resident Evil 5)

I think that you are one of those ppl dat r stuck in the past, this is a new generation of gaming and I honestly dont miss the old games. I am 19 and I think that this is the best generation of games. I dont mean to offend you, i just think you r 1 of the few really old gamers that r stuck in the past and need to move on.

With the costs as high as they are these days when it comes to developing games as well as production costs we are lucky that its just $60 per game.

Drunkenmunkey15

what? do you even know what "HD" means? and there is no point of getting larger definitions unless the TV size is bigger. (example, a 32" TV WON'T look any different with 1080p then with 720p.) Therefore, this topic makes neer to no sense.
