    Every GameSpot 10/10 Review Score

By GameSpot Staff on March 4, 2025 at 8:11AM PST

    The gaming essentials.

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

    The gaming essentials.

It isn't often that we give 10/10 review scores on GameSpot. Since the site was founded in 1996, only 28 games have earned that rank. But to achieve a 10/10, a game needs to be essential, and it needs to have something so meaningful to offer us that it simply cannot be ignored. Regardless, a 10/10 review score is always determined by the personal opinion of its respective writer and always reflects as such. So without further ado, here is a list of all the games that we've scored with a 10/10! For more details on the review process and what a 10/10 means at GameSpot, check out our in-depth Q&A below.

What makes a game a 10, and has that definition changed over the years? Does a 10 mean it's "perfect"?

A 10 does not mean a game is perfect, but it does mean that it's a game we believe everyone should play. In our opinion, no game can be considered perfect. That means you may see a game getting a 10 despite having issues. It also means that games without obvious flaws may be scored below 10.

On the rare occasion when we publish a 10 review, that is our way of saying that no matter your preference for genre, developer, setting, or console, you owe it to yourself to find a way to play the game in question.

A review is obviously just one person's opinion, so how do you deal with conflicting thoughts on a game, both for high and low scores? What if someone else on GameSpot thinks a game deserves a much higher (or lower) score?

It's true that every review is an individual's take on a game, and sure enough, the many individuals within GameSpot often have differing opinions on the same game. This is something we accept, and we welcome diversity of opinion at the end of the day.

GameSpot's editorial team peer-reviews each other's work during the review process. This is not to determine whether we all agree on a score, but it allows us to ensure that the text we publish backs up the score that's issued. That means that there are reviews published where we may not all agree with the editor's opinion, but are otherwise confident enough in their argumentation to put our stamp on the review.

When the time comes that a score fails to align with the text as submitted, we will work together with the author to determine if they were able to effectively convey their thoughts relative to the score, and vice versa. We always encourage our writers to put their words down first and determine the score after the fact.

"Split Fiction could very well be the best cooperative game I've ever played. At the very least, I firmly believe it sets a new standard for the genre. And yet, it's more than that. Split Fiction is a love letter to creativity--to stories, games, and the people who make them. It is funny, dark, joyous, childish, tender, cheesy, thrilling, and remarkable." Read the full review.

    Metaphor: ReFantazio

    Metaphor: ReFantazio

"Somehow, Metaphor: ReFantazio is even greater than the sum of its parts, yet each piece of the game is masterfully crafted. I found the whole experience transcendent and was impressed by how it felt both novel yet familiar--elevated and modern, yet so reminiscent to the fantasy RPGs I sunk countless hours into on my little grey PlayStation. But most importantly, it made me remember that we are lost without hope. It sounds silly and cliche, I know--sometimes it can be. It also certainly doesn't put out the fires set all over the world. But it reminded me that giving into despair and fear serves no one, myself included. It reminded me that fantasy and fiction have power--words and stories have power. They can inspire and comfort, and these things that are vital to preserving. And it reminded me that the proof of good in the world can be us, and that's a good start." Read the full review.

"Alan Wake 2 is one of the most ambitious games I've ever played, but don't misconstrue that, as it doesn't fall short of its lofty goals. On the contrary, Alan Wake 2 achieves virtually everything developer Remedy Entertainment set out to do. It's a game that feels novel and risky that is executed with confidence and a clarity of vision. The end result is a one-of-a-kind sequel that redefines its series, blazes trails in video game storytelling, and stands as the monument to a studio that has unlocked its potential to the fullest." "Near the end of Baldur's Gate 3, a character says, "Too much freedom can be frightening." It's a powerful line within the context of the story, but it also speaks to Baldur's Gate 3 on a deeper level. The freedom that it offers is unprecedented, and it takes a little while to really see the scope of what that means for the game. At times, the sheer number of choices and consequences can be overwhelming. But before long, it becomes apparent that Baldur's Gate 3 allows players to be the authors of their own destinies in a way no other game has before." Read the full review.

It's a fantastic mix of nearly everything you could ask of Cyberpunk. And after taking 30 hours to experience all of its content--both main story routes, the new ending, all the side missions and gigs, and more--I can't imagine Cyberpunk 2077 without Phantom Liberty." "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is so much more than a sequel to Breath of the Wild. While this newest entry in the Zelda franchise is most recognizably similar to that 2017 game, it builds upon the foundation so thoroughly and transformationally that it feels like a revelation. This is The Legend of Zelda at its finest, borrowing the best pieces and qualities from across the franchise's history and creating something new that is emotionally resonant, captivating, and endlessly rewarding." Its commitment to design by subtraction and to placing the responsibility of charting a path through its world entirely on the player makes it stand head and shoulders above other open-world titles. Elden Ring takes the shards of what came before and forges them into something that will go down in history as one of the all-time greats: a triumph in design and creativity, and an open-world game that distinguishes itself for what it doesn't do as much as what it does." "Perhaps the most laudable part of Deathloop is how it takes so many seemingly disparate things and creates harmony between them. Gameplay systems that feel isolated become pieces of a bigger puzzle, and when you see how they seamlessly connect together, you realize how special an achievement it really is. Similarly, on paper, the different aesthetics should be like oil and water, but they come together effortlessly to be part of a greater whole, and, for me, that's what Deathloop is really about. By standing back and looking at the bigger picture, the uncharacteristic choices and unexpected behaviors feel necessary--essential even." Read the full review.

Learning the various operators and how to breach or protect a room with them can be a slow crawl, but Siege makes it easy to understand what your mistakes are, thanks in part to seeing both sides of every match. "For anyone who appreciates games that rise above the simple act of pushing a few buttons and pulling a few triggers, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a stimulating ride that you won't soon forget. You'll want to see what happens next, yet when its long campaign draws to a close, you'll wish it would continue. That's not just because it's a well-told tale, but because that tale is woven through a thoroughly impressive game that tops its predecessors." Read the full review.

"In case you haven't guessed already, Grand Theft Auto IV is a game that you simply have to play. The single-player game, which you can still play long after you complete the story, is the series' best by far, and the multiplayer features are good enough that you'll likely have no problem finding people to play with for many months to come. The minor flaws that you'll experience are no more difficult to overlook than those in previous GTA games, and they're greatly outnumbered by the features that will impress and surprise you anytime you think you've already seen everything that the game has to offer. When you have to justify 10s you know you have a serious problem with your rating system. I mean look at Witcher 3...REALLY did that game deserve a 10? good game but a 10?I dont think so..

@IanNottinghamX: "I don't think so.." was the imporant part of your sentance. Because the difference between an 8, 9 or 10 is very subjective. You didn't think so, he thought so. And so did A LOT of people since The Witcher 3 has an overall critic score of 92 on metacrtic.

@IanNottinghamX: I haven't played witcher 3 yet, played witcher 2 and loved it a LOT, and most people say that TW3 is better than TW2 in many ways, so I'm pretty sure the game's a solid 10.

@IanNottinghamX: No open world game ever launched without bugs and technical issues. Look at Bethesda games. The same outdated engine for years and same bugs/problems appear with their every release.

Wicher 3 was CDPRs third game ever and their first open world game and if you ask me they did an amazing job and for such a big game with up to 150-200 hours of content the amount of problems it launched with seem nothing when compared. Not to mention their total budget of 81 million which is not that much for triple-A title especially when you consider GTA 5 had 265.

@stereoflava: Things like budget dont make a game better. And when I say the game had issues, Im not JUST talking about bugs. Im talking fundamental gameplay flaws.Things that either make the game too boring or just plain incomplete. You dont make a game that does things less successfully than other games of that same said year and then make it game of the year..sorry...but no.

@xMansie: euh what ? The only PS4 exclusive is Uncharted 4. Journey was on PS3. GTAV and IV were on all system, MGS4 was on PS3, MGS5 on all system, Bayonetta 2 on WiiU, Zelda Ocarina of time on the N64. Tony Hawk Pro Skater was on many system, Chrono Cross was on PS1 or SNES. Soul Calibur 2 on the Dreamcast. Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii.

so 1) not that old and 2) one exclusive to the PS4, 3) ok no game exclusive to Xbox but meh all those 10's aren't 10 in my opinion.

gta iv and mgs v have no business being here... they are 8's at best. the latter was flat out incomplete and one of the most disappointing games i have ever played (i otherwise love every other mgs game), the former had far too many performance issues to be playable, not to mention a terrible protagonist.

    @saturatedbutter:

-Repetitive main missions. Drive there, kill that & repeat about 70 times

-the story lost its tracks after you unlock Alderney

    -stiff character movement

-lack of side activities (unless you like bowling)

-dumb humour. They didnt know if they wanted a serious game or over the top like SA so they put a million 69 and toilet jokes in there

Sure IV has good sides too but doesnt deserve 10

    @jollyboy00:

The main missions weren't the most diverse sort. This is probably the weakest part of GTA IV. But it didn't really matter because the cutscenes and the story was incredible. The big bank heist still lives on as one of the best missions in any third person shooter. It was such a critically praised mission that Rockstar decided to make GTA V all about heists. Even so, Three Leaf Clover is still a better mission than any of the heists in 5.

The story was on point all the way to the end. It's a story about Niko Belic. His struggles, his troubled past, his distaste for what he was and how he could never escape it because it was all he knew how to do. Niko is incredible.

Side missions? Some of the random encounters are really good. Mostly what you do in that game other than the main campaign is just mess around, which brings me to...

stiff character movement? What are you talking about? GTA IV revolutionized character movement. It was the smoothest character animation and movement control ever seen in any game. It made GTA IV just mechanically fun to mess around in as a sandbox. The only real issues were in close-quarters. Which is where you will likely have the hardest time if you try going back and playing that game today. The cover system at the time looked incredible because the physics engine just made everything look so fluid, but it was a bit unwieldy when indoors or any area where you're in a very confined space.

As for the humour, the radio stations in GTA IV were by far the best radio GTA has ever had. The whole ring-wing/left-wing political stations thing did an incredible job of satirizing American political media, the Judge Grady segments were hilarious, the commercials were incredibly memorable. It's the best the series has been since Chatterbox FM on GTA 3. Also, Brucie was a great dumb character that added a lot of flavour to Niko's otherwise depressing story. To say the comedy in GTA IV is all just references to the number 69 and dicks and farting makes me think you maybe didn't play the game very much or you're not remembering it very well.

In closing, GTA IV absolutely deserves a 10. People shit on it because San Andreas was zany and playful in a ridiculous over-the-top kind of way and they were disappointed that IV didn't continue going deeper into that. Rockstar was actually very smart to go for a more grounded realistic tone because Saint's Row was already capitalizing on the over-the-top aspects of GTA games. GTA IV was absolutely best-in-class and set a new standard for animations and physics in AAA games. I could talk all day about how great of an achievement Grand Theft Auto IV is.

The biggest problem with some of these is that it's clear they have flaws, even written down as a flaw, yet still get a 10. If it's fucking flawed, it's not a 10. A 10 is a perfect score with nothing wrong with it.

We know, Gamespot. You used to barely ever give them out and now your writers are not that great so you give them out all the time. Since 2008 you've given 8, 5 of which have been within the last 2 years (1 of those being on a re-release).

The rating is pretty meaningless at this point since ya'll now give them out like candy. At least, it's not as unachievable as the site once saw it so this whole article no longer has any meaning as it once meant something when Gamespot gave a 10 and now it just means that the reviewer liked the game a lot and it doesn't really mean anything else.

@cornbredx: You make a very great point here. It seems as though a lot of 10s were given out in the past 2-3 years...back in the day it was much tougher. Games like Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, Halo: Combat Evolved...which all were as close as you can get to 10s..these games didn't get 10s. Yet a re-release of Journey does? Questionable.

@cornbredx: It's almost as sad as when Edge Magazine went soft with their 10s...

@cornbredx: yeah you apparently don't read other gaming sites. This site by far gives less 10's than any others I've seen.

@cornbredx: Compared to most other websites, they're still stingy with them.

I like how the list is low on 10s lol. They mean something. And that gap before GTA IV launched is huge.

Well, for my tastes I would remove GTA IV, which was seriously flawed, specially that horrible physics engine, and MGS V, which was incomplete, even if it had solid gameplay.

Would add Planescape Torment though, too bad it didn't get a 10, for me it's a must for any RPG player out there.

@RogerioFM: The physics in GTA IV are still the best in a GTA game. GTA V was a serious step back for the series in terms of physics.

In GTA IV the bikes were an absolute blast to ride and you got the impression that it was actually the riders weight controlling the bike. In GTA V they feel like they are on rails and pivot in a ridiculous manner. I barely ever ride bikes in GTA V because they are so dull to ride and it frustrates me knowing how good it would have been if they handled like they did in GTA IV.

Also, the planes and helicopters sway from side to side for no good reason in GTA V. I play flight sims from time to time and can tell you, that does not happen. It isn't realistic, so why they opted to do that is beyond me.

The cars feel more arcadey in GTA V too (GTA IV was hardly a sim, but cars had more convincing weight transfer, suspension loading and feeling of weight), though the change to the car handling is much more acceptable than the bikes handling. The thing I really don't like though is how much control of your car you have mid-air and the fact that you can roll your car onto its wheels when it has settled on its roof. In GTA IV, you had subtle control over the car mid-air and if the car settled on it's roof you had to ditch it. I understand that they did it because the map is so large and rolling your car while out in the sticks can be a pain in the ass, but personally I'd prefer it if you had no control of the car mid-air and were punished for your mistakes.

With GTA IV they took a step towards realism which I personally preferred. It seems that the majority of people prefer the more arcadey style of play from GTA SA, so they scaled back the realism to a point between the two for GTA V.

@RogerioFM: GTA IV was amazing. The physics engine, The Euphoria engine, is by far the greatest physics engine made to date. It's not just ragdoll, it dynamically creates animations on the fly.

Also, Niko Belic is still the most realistic main character to ever be in a video game. That dude was very conflicted in a real human way and his voice acting was absolutely top shelf. There is a very clear theme throughout the game of self loathing. He hates what he's doing, he never enjoys it. He hates what he's become. And in the end, the thing he was doing it all for, the closure he needed, was hollow and bittersweet. It was one of the most beautiful character roles I've ever seen in any form of entertainment.

@RogerioFM: Everyone says that about GTA4, but you have to look at what they pulled off for the year. The physics were insane, the world was dense, gunplay was hugely improved over San Andreas. It was incredible. Of course it has not aged well and customization was low. A lot of people didn't like the tone of the story. I loved it, it was nice to see a more serious feel at times. At the time it came out it was a total 10. Now in my mind its a 9.4, but you have to look at it historically for year and what it achieved,

@jaybrarrrrr: I suppose that by looking at it from this mindset it would make sense. I remember the physics still bothering me back then. But regardless of that, there was nothing quite like it.

@DantheMan9856: I recently came across a "feminist reviews" channel or something on Youtube (don't ask me how)...

lo and behold it was Carolyn and she was shredding Quantum Break for being overly sexist and objectifies women...

I have no idea how...... xD

@DantheMan9856: by "filled with" you mean like 2 or 3 sentences. You gamergate types are hilariously easy to trigger, and it's so ironic considering your hatred for "SJW sensitivity."

Grow up. GTA 5 had a pretty glaring issue with women. The lack of any decent female characters in that game would have been fine if it weren't compounded by being filled with poor stereotypes of women. GTA IV did a better job with female characters than V did.

@DantheMan9856: Man, she scored the game 9. If anything, Red Dead Redemption deserved an "Essential" score more than GTA IV and V.

Bayonetta 2, GTA 4, MGS 4 those are the only ones I'd have never score a 10/10 at the time of their arrival.
