Good morning and Happy Tuesday!
I don't have a lot of pretty graphics to share today, just a truly amazing story of how God can bless people through you if you will just get off your butt and do something. :D
My deaf ministry team has taken some trips to Nashville to minister to the homeless there. Because they're deaf? No. Just because we are a ministry team and sharing with people who need it is truly something we should all be doing, even if it isn't the primary focus of our particular group on a regular basis.
In February, our team found a Deaf homeless man named John. This was really shocking, as it is very rare for a Deaf person to be alone on the street. The Deaf community is very close-knit, and it is also common for an independent Deaf adult to receive government assistance of some sort. Our team was able to make a strong connection with this man, and even eventually earn his trust.
Most homeless people tend to stick in pairs for companionship and protection. John had no one with whom to communicate. His protection and companionship came from a large dog named Bear, who he loved dearly.
When we left in February, we told him we would be back. Since that time, different team members have stopped by and tried to find him, but were unsuccessful.
Our team went back last weekend (without me, as I was on vacation). They found John. Bear had been taken from him and put in the pound back in April, when John was incarcerated overnight for public intoxication. Left with no companionship or protection, and without his dog that had become his only true friend, he had lost the will to live. He had lost down to 128 pounds at 6'2". He had basically stopped trying to find food, and was drinking heavily daily.
He was so excited to see the team. They actually brought him back home with them! He is currently staying at one of the churches in town. We have provided him with food, clothes and a puppy. He loves the pup, a basset hound/beagle mix, who he named Oscar.
To beat everything, our director took John to the Social Security office yesterday to check on his benefits. The social worker was shocked at the situation. Apparently, his money has been there the entire time. He didn't understand how the system worked, and no one ever cared enough to take the time to explain it to him in a way he could understand.
Now, not only will he start receiving a monthly check that is substantial enough to support himself on, but he will also receive a check for 8 1/2 years of back pay! $54,000.00! If it had been any other kind of benefit it wouldn't have accrued. But the particular assistance he receives does accrue, and is owed to him.
The local Deaf community has completely embraced John. He is surrounded now by people who can communicate with him, and that really care. He has been sober for9 days, and is hoping to continue that way.
All I can say to that is God is AWESOME!!!! Praise the Lord!!
So many people sit back and do nothing because the simple fact is, you can't save everyone. But you can make a difference!
