I agree with most people on this that you should bump it to a 1080p, not just for the higher definition but more than likely all next gen systems will be native 1080p. I don't really know if I would go with a lesser know brand my experience with a cheaper brand ie. Vizio the sound quality sucked...my opinion save a little more cash and get a 1080p Samsung, Sony, LG, or Toshiba. And as for stats because just like everyone else you will ask LCD vs Plasma:
Burn in - Plasma is worse about burn in (example if you watch tv for a few hours and the station logo is constantly in the bottom righthand corner if you change the channel it will show very faintly for a few minutes and then go away...this is virtually inexistant with LCD Tvs)
Dynamic ratio - #:1 the higher this number (#) the greater the contrast in colors Plasma generally has a higher contrast ratio
Refresh Rate - measured in Hz generally a higher number is better but 60 - 120 is the typical norm for an LCD and from the looks of it most Plasmas are at about 600 I would advise not going below 60 Hz since you are going to use this for gaming if you do your rapid movements WILL get choppy.
Lighting - yes lighting should play the most vital role in your purchasing of a HDTV. Plasma is better suited for normal or low light settings, where as an LCD is suited for all lighting instances whether it be bright-lighting as in an airport or dim lighting as in you typical theater.
Video Degradation - not as much of an issue as it used to be when Plasma and LCD TVs first came out both typically do not see video degradation until after 5 years of typical usage (typical usage of 4 hours a day approx 7300 hours of play.) Both start losing quality but this is virtually unnoticable to begin with ;)
HDTV Life - Both types are announced by manufacturers to last 100,000 hours this is only a half truth. LCD will last as long as the bulb in it does this could be more or less than 100,000 hours. Plasma on the other hand uses gases to create color and this is where video degradation plays in, as you watch more and more of your Plasma TV the more your video will degrade you are very likely to replace your TV before this gets too bad ;)
Size - Plasma typically looks better on TVs above 42" where as LCD typically looks better at less than 50". A good rule of thumb for deciding on size (bigger is not always better) for every foot of distance between you and the TV you can add 10" to the display ex. 4ft = 40" or less 5ft = 50" or less and so on (one reason you want to check this before purchasing your TV if you buy a 50" TV and sit 3ft away from the screen the image will look pixelated(LCD) or jagged(Plasma) you can test this at your local Bestbuy to see for yourself. That may be why that LCD doesn't look so good in the store:))
Sound - yes more expensize HDTVs have better sound quality! If you do decide to go with a cheaper TV do yourself a favor and get a good surround sound system. If not this is not absolutely necessary since more expensive TVs have better sound set-ups but if you want to splurge as I did go ahead.
LED - Very similar to LCD probably more expensive than you're willing to spend.
Hope this helps!
