I don't know IF that will solve your issue, just telling you what it did for me. Somehow, My HD "lost" part of the latest update. Reinstalled that and its great. yours very well good be a bammer laser (mine didn't even try to play a game. just made the spinning "clock" go for about 20mins before telling me it couldn't find a disk in the drive)

I went through this about 2 months ago. try going to Sonys website. download the latest system update to a flash stick. and load the flash stick on your ps3. for me it turned out that the update was corrupt. haven't had an issue for weeks (playing every night). Mine would play Blu-ray movies, but not the games.
I guess I chose the wrong phrase. lets change "hardcore" to "realistic" or "mature". And that IS why I bought a PS3. Not just for "real" graphics, but for more open world games (GTA, RDR, Assassin's creed). I would totally play "Madworld", if it lasted longer than 4hours or had any replay value. I played "No more Heroes" and thought it was ok. On rail shooters are fine the first playthrough. I would rather play Links crossbow challange for the deep combo system than HOTD. I have Metroid trilogy, and think RE4 is one of the top 5 I've ever played. the conduit was great for the first 2 levels. than it was the same 3 enemies in levels that seem to consist of the same room or hallway over and over (and I'm not getting into the online train wreck)
Now stand in the game section of a target or best buy. Do you see more "cookin' Mama" and "Happy feet"or "Mad world" and "Black ops?" The 3rd party shovelware of "are you smarter than a5th grader" and " the biggest loser" (how do you make that a game?)fill more spaces.
flakeman - Now, going back to my "hardcore" status. If playing SMB3, zelda, and duck tales (and its far better not-a-sequal Rescue Rangers)qualify me, than I guess I'm the most hardcore player around. owned and beat all SMB (even oldschooldot matrix gameboy, and still own Mario all stars for my SNES), likewise for all zeldas (except wind waker, cause I had sold my gamecube by then). Metroid nes, snes, gameboy, and currently trilogy. Megaman 1 - 3. knocked out Tyson and made it past the rocket sled level on "Battletoads" (once, and by luck. didn't beat the game, but I got past that damn level). But what do I have for my Wii? Metroid trilogy and Tiger woods. Beat New Super Mario bros., Beat Zelda (twice, both trips were awesome), won't buy Donkey Kong Country because I played it before when I beat Donkey Kong country 1 & 2.
In my opinion, using "hardcore" to describe a person is impossible. If you love games (period), your hardcore. You may only play nintendogs, but if you play the hell out of it and know every in and out, your pretty core.It can't be defined by some checklist some people got together and made. DKC, while fun, wouldn't enter into my top 100, because when you strip it down, its a way easier Mario bros. (just replace coins with bananas) with no innovation. And I'm sure no one has the SNES version of "Shadowrun" on their "hardcore" list (which is a shame, since it was oneof the first sand box games. really, youtube it).
in the end, this is just my opinion, which is exactly what the topic asked for. why am I disapointed in the Wii? part of it, theres too many kiddy games.
[QUOTE="29111"]
Kids games - there is a difference between making "kyle kittens adventure in scratching post forest" and making a deep "family friendly"adventure game without getting into "cute". Things like Red Dead Redemption could exist on the wii and not have to have all the cursing and nudity. Red Steel is good, and No more heroes is.....something...but the mass majority are fluffy dream stealer flower crap. the NES had some hardcore games. Metal Gear, Iron Tank, Cabal, Ninja Gaiden, Madden, castlevania. Why can't those same themes be done on the wii? They even fluffied up Madden on the wii! I get that they can't do PS3 graphics. but you can do xbox graphics. Keep sports looking real.

So your perception of kiddy vs "hardcore" video gaming content is solely based on the artstyle/graphics?
There's a difference between cartoony vs photo realism and arcade vs simulation, but these things does not determine whether a video game is "kiddy" or "mature" i.e. aimed at kids or adults.
I would say that Kirby's Epic Yarn is a game that is aimed more towards kids, especially considering the narrator voice, dialogue and overall presentation, but meanwhile it has the depth that a core gamer wants in a game. Same principle goes for Pokémon.
Donkey Kong Country: Returns is also a colorful, arcady game and overall simplistic. However it's targeted for the core gamers, but offers super-guide and other means to make it more accessible for newcomers.
See what I did there? Both titles very bright, colorful, arcady and simplistic but aimed at totally different audiences.
There are adults and "mature" people who prefer arcady and wacky games such as NBA Jam, and there are others who want their sports games to look and play as real as possible. Stop with the tunnel visioning.
TLDR; You're not hardcore. I'm not saying you're wrong for liking those types of games, I'm talking about how one determines whether a video game is targeted at kids or adults, or everyone, and you're doing that wrong.
I'm not disputing if Kirby is a deep game. or if Donkey Kong is balanced enough to appeal to both parties. I'm talking about 90% of games on nintendoLOOKING like Hello Kitty. They may be deep games, they may be harder than Mega Man 1. But they look kiddy. Maddan isn't NBA Jam, Blitz is. Blitz can look goofy, but don't call yourself a sports sim if your wide receiver looks like a triangle on 'roids.
Yes I am disappointed. bought it on launch day and was blown away by Wii Sports and had such high hopes for where people would take this new tech. Sadly no one did anything with it. Motion controls, in my opinion, are not the "next big thing". Nor should they be a part of EVERY game. Motion control for Tiger Woods? No brainer! motion controls for Metal Slug? no. motion controls for Dead rising: CTYD? Hell, they shouldn't have even made the game. Nintendo made great games, and motion controls with Resident Evil 4 made it one of the best games I've ever played. But too many other games had the motion thrown in and it felt pointless/useless/out of place.
Graphics/horse power - How can the 3DS get street fighter 4 but the wii can't? thats under powered. Nintendo rung every last bit of awesome out of the Wii with SMG 1+2, Zelda, and Metroid. But like what another poster said, cross platform games got skipped on Wii, and I felt left out too.
Channels - Why give me 4 pages to fill with games and channels, but only give enough memory to fill 2 1/2? Internet channel never got updated (it can't even display yahoo's home page). Weather channel always says its snowing during winter (actual snowfall? 4hrs total). News is limited at best. Vote for the mii channel and vote channel are filler (but its a kids system, so whatever), The picture channel said something about "posting pictures for others to see", but outside of "mailing" them, i never saw where this "bulletin board" was. what about a music streaming channel? Or a Wii version of yahoo games, where you can play chess or checkers and things of that sort? sadly under developed. If it wasn't for Netflix, I wouldn't even turn my Wii on anymore (really).
VC games - They have covered most of the classics, but others stay lost. Pilotwings 64, hogans ally, super double dragon, duck hunt, rouge squadron are all MIA. they started the "arcade" section, but don't seem to invested in that either. TONS of 80's arcade games could be released, but either nintendo isn't asking the makers for them, or nintendo is telling them no. Ikari warriors, double dragon arcade, cyberball, gauntlet, hard driving, cheyenne. None of these seem to be one their way. instead, there was some arcade updates of games that were already released in their NES or SNES forms (why buy it twice).
Wii Shop - PSN has weekly sales and bundles. Would it kill nintendo to make SMB 1 or Zelda only 200-300 points for a week? what about a customer rating with each game? I never played any Neo-Geo games, what can I learn about them from 2 paragraphs of advertising? Yes, I know the nintendo channel has a search engine to dig up SOME info on some of these games, but thats in a different channel. Put it in the shop where its more useful.
Online - its all been said.
add ons - what can I use my balance board with.......oh.....WiiSpeak?.....oh.

I doubt I'll be buying nintendos next system first day, if at all....than again I haven't missed a nintendo product yet.
For all you getting suckered into this, stop and think....When was the last time nintendo gave anything away for free? You get stickers and posters (at around $2 to make), or a hat. Not $100 worth of software and hardware. as for the pic of the UPS box, I still have my shipping box from my cheaply made SMB statue. Maybe I should go home, take some pictures of it next to a stack of bagels, and start a post saying "Nintendo gave me free bagels!"....
[QUOTE="29111"][QUOTE="MrSelf-Destruct"] I completely agree with you, but my concern is not for piracy. Hacking and cheating across the PSN is the only thing that bothers me. If I pay $60 for a game I don't want to have to worry about crap like that.

1) the box office hasn't shown sign of earnings decline because in 10 years ticket prices have jumped from $5.75 to $10 in most places (and pushing $20 eachfor 3D). Attandance is down, year after year.
2) As far as hacking goes, you want to turn your PS3 into a DVR or make it so you can control your toaster with a sixaxis, go nuts. But jacking games and ruining it for everyone can never be justified. Does Sony have billions of dollars? yes. Will they miss your piddly $60 for GTA V? nope. But Rock Star will. What did Rock Star do to you? make too many kick ass games? Its the game makers that get hurt, not always Sony.
3) Why has more than one person made refrence to "the cause" when talking about this "Geohot"? What cause? This isn't the IRA. We're not in the Matrix. PEOPLE OF THE WORLD! WE ARE FREE FROM THE TYRANNY OF SONY, FOR I HAVE MADE A MOD THAT MAKES TEA BAGGING AN ACTUAL MELEE ATTACK!
Yeah, piracy sucks, but I promise you Gamestop is doing more damage than ThePiratebay. Its still not justifiable, so I will make no attempts to. :P Word! $4 for my copy of aliens vs predator 3 weeks after i bought it!?! Eat one, gamestop. It won't have that much of an effect, to be honest. I know it's easy to think that no one will buy games if you can get them all for free, but statistics prove otherwise. You use to be able to pirate games in previous gen hardware and the gaming industry was more than OK. People still buy the games and the difference in revenue is negligible. That's why there isn't a drop off in box office revenue despite the fact that it's easily of the most pirated entertainment medium. In fact, the box office has only been improving. This is much the same with almost every entertainment medium. People still buy products, even people who DO pirate because they want to support the companies that made the product. The gaming industry would go through a similar effect. I'm not saying it won't affect the revenue at all because there's no way of knowing that. But the difference will be far less than you think and it certainly won't be enough to cripple the market. I completely agree with you, but my concern is not for piracy. Hacking and cheating across the PSN is the only thing that bothers me. Are you going to be ticked ? I don't understand about the whole freedom to do whatever you want to consoles just listen to yourself talk! Trust me the whole mod thing seems pretty awesome at close up, but if you pan out and look at things from a perspective you'll realize it's not pretty. You'll have a broken system and a broken community; you like that? Once consoles are modded, that means games can be pirated which means devs don't get the money to deserve; if you like a game support it! not mooch off them. After that games will be hacked; can you imagine that every single game you go into will have hackers? Games will be rendered useless! MrSelf-Destruct

Try loading the latest O/S patch from the sony website using a memory stick instead of via online. worked for me. than again, your lazer could be crap.
Super Castlevaina VI is great. I'm waiting for Pilotwings 64.
