I'm still wanting to hear about HOW you went from being homeless to not-homeless. Because you're claiming that once you're homeless, you can't better yourself and you've got nowhere left to go. Yet you WERE homeless and now you are NOT.

So I think that warrants further questioning. I don't doubt that being homeless sucked. But you're not homeless any more. YOU have personal experience here. HOW did you stop being homeless. How LONG did it take for you to stop being homeless? What happened? Please elaborate. I don't normally like to pry into people's personal lives, but you brought this up and it might be relevant to the discussion.

And a lot of people in prison also have little support, and their chances are slim. I suspect that this is at least part of the reason why so many prisoners end up right back in prison.

So yes, prison sucks.

Yes, being homeless also sucks.

Is there any reason why this has to be a contest, to see which is worse? Prison isn't a cakewalk, and neither is being homeless (presumably). You don't want to be homeless OR in prison. But I fail to see a necessary connection whereby one SHOULD be worse than the other. Just because homeless people aren't prisoners, does that mean that we should take extra-special care of them in order to make them happy? No. They are free men. And just because some homeless people may be more miserable than some prisoners, does that mean that we should go to great steps to make the lives of prisoners more miserable? No. They lost their freedom and are in the custody of the government, and it's the government's responsibility to treat them humanely.

Prison and homelessness are two completely different animals. And if the homeless man thinks that being in prison is really that much better than being homeless, the homeless man is free to intentionally commit a felony so that he goes to prison. Voila, he just bettered his life.
