AA Retrospective #3 - Top Ten JFA Songs (SPOILERS)

Yay, more music! Unfortunately, I consider JFA's soundtrack to be the weakest of the series nest to that of the original game and Apollo Justice. But of course, it's still awesome, with far improved court themes and 3 excellent new Reminiscence themes. So, let's get to the music.

Please enjoy. :)

If you haven't guessed by now, I'll be doing one of these for all of the games, and possibly a top 20-25 for the series.

AA Retrospective #2 - Top Ten PW:AA Songs

Alright, time for the music blogs. The Ace Attorney series has some of my favorite music of all time, and there isn't a bad soundtrack in the bunch. The music is so good that it's probably one of the series' best qualities. So, without further ado, here are my top ten songs from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Enjoy. :D

Sorry About That.

I was unable to access the Internet for a few days shortly after my previous blog, so my Ace Attorney Retrospective has been delayed. Until tomorrow. So for the 2 people who care, new Ace Attorney blog tomorrow. :P

4th GS Anniversary and Level 40 (Virgin!)

How ironic that these two things happened on the same day. 4 years ago, I (sorta) joined Gamespot (I really had no idea this site existed, but I joined TV.com. :P). And today, I have finally reached the permanent virginhood level, LEVEL 40!

.

He he he, yeah. So, congrats to me!

Ace Attorney Retrospective #1 - Ranking the Games (SPOILERS)

I suppose I should start off by ranking the games in the series (in my opinion of course). Be forewarned that the entirity of this retrospective series will contain massive spoilers, and I will be saying so in the blog titles. If you read these and have the series spoiled for you, it's your fault. :)

#5: Justice for All

.

At the bottom of the Ace Attorney pile is the sequel to the original game. Make no mistake, I'd give this game at least an 8, but the others overshadow it, even if Apollo Justice does so only slightly. My main reason for putting it at the bottom is, along with having the least interesting cases of the original trilogy, it has the occasional flash of extraordinarily stupid writing. In the first case, we are told that a man who died of a broken neck managed to write the name of his killer in the dirt he was lying in. Yes, that's right, a man with a broken neck wrote his name. And to top that off, presenting the autopsy report as a contradiction is actually the wrong answer. Turns out, since this game introduced the ability to present profiles as evidence at any time in court, you had to present the defendant's profile to prove that the name in the dirt and the defendan't name are spelled differently. I'm not making this up. And that's not all. Maya is arrested for a murder supposedly performed by the spirit she was channeling, even though the prosecution states over and over that Maya's conciousness wasn't present. So why the hell is she on trial again? Facial reconstruction fools everyone for a year. A cape flies up from a victim onto the murder weapon. Yes, some moments will have you go "WTF". Fortunately, JFA does everything else right, despite not having any overarching storyline. The last case is intense, and actually breaks the mold by having you defend a guilty person in exchange for Maya's life. But as one final blow, this game has the poorest soundtrack of the series, and in a series I love for it's music, that is a kill shot. :P

#4: Apollo Justice

.

Next up the list is Apollo Justice. Many consider this to be the poorest of the series, but as you've already seen, I consider that to be JFA. This game, however, earns the #4 spot only slightly. Whereas JFA has occasionally stupid writing, AA has pretty much across the board average writing. Except for the last case, which nearly makes up for the rest of the game, the writing and cases aren't nearly as good or interesting as the best Ace Attorney games. But the biggest problem I have is with the disbarment of Phoenix Wright. This game takes place roughly seven years after that, which itself occured 3 month after T&T ended. This makes the original trilogy feel pointless in some ways, but mostly seems like a convenient way to star a new character. And Apollo himself has almost no character development until the last case drops massive bombshells. Those bombshells, coincidentally, are the reason that this game isn't in last place. On the good side, it has an awesome villian in Kristoph, actually uses touch screen controls, and manages to introduce some new possibilites for the series by the end. And the music is great. :P

#3: Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney

.

Ah yes, the one that started it all. This game introduces the characters that shape the entire series, such as Phoenix, Edgeworth, Mia and Maya, and Ema Skye. There's not a whole lot wrong with this game, but compared to the heights reached by T&T, it only gets the 3rd spot on the list. In fact, compared to the games that came after it, everything in this game is middle-of-the-pack. Pacing-wise, only Apollo Justice is out****d. But since this is the original, it gets the most respect out of the group.

#2 Miles Edgeworth

.

This game is awesome, not only because it changes up the gameplay somewhat, but because Miles Edgeworth is an awesome main character. This game originally was going to star Ema Skye, but after seeing Edgeworth in action, I can fully support the change. The cases are the best in the whole series, as every one is connected to a smuggling ring that you bring down in the last case. Not only that, but the supporting cast is the best in the series. Kay Faraday is my favorite supporting character, Shi-Long Lang and Tyrell Badd are incredibly cool, and the villians are all satisfying to crush under your boot. Not to mention, it has the best character themes in the series. Play this game.

#1: Trials & Tribulations

.

Put simply, this is the best game in the original trilogy, and the best at the ****c Ace Attorney gameplay. Everything you loved about the original game is polished to a mirror shine here. The characters are awesome (Godot wins everything), the villians are amazing (OMG it's Dahlia Hawthoren RUN!), it actually makes the cases not connected as interesting as the ones that are, and the ending puts a bowtie on not just the game, but the whole trilogy. True win.
