Didn't we like just have this kinda discussion with the "Sega Saturn Best Of All Time" thread? Aside from the fact that it's like the bijilion~ish time we're pointing out reasons of its failure. I love the console as well but damn.

I have the Prima OoT N64 guide from back when it first released. Bought it because I never played a Zelda before then and friends kept telling me I'd be lost without it. It really did help. I think it's lost or in storage now.

The only good thing it's got going for it is the better battle system, IMO. The fact that it was a direct sequel to an FF game raised eyebrows by itself at the time.

What's with you,EW? i can't have an opinion?

GreekGameManiac

OP never asked for the critique of games. He's asking for options which he'll then filter and decide for himself. Your opinions are your opinions but you take it another level and make this place like an SW forum. It's like someone asking for one option on which joint to eat lunch at today. Most people get the idea that all he wants is options, not a debate. All would give their opinions and he'd decide for himself later on. But you come up and say: "Sorry, but you guy's options suck" and not bother giving your own options. Simply adding nothing of value to the inquiry and instigating a pointless discussion.

Most people would be civil enough to ignore the pointless jab. But some people will call you out simply because they're curious or for the laugh. It has nothing to do with your notion that people disregard your opinion. It's basically pointless for this thread.

So, I'm not sure I like Radiant Historia. I like the gameplay, and the battle-system. But therein lies the problem for me, there's just not enough gameplay. I seem to spend faaaaarrrr more time reading line after line of dialogue from over-talkative characters. Granted it's an RPG and I should expect that; but it seems to be a LOT of useless babble.

The battles and level-up system seem to be a tad too easy, too. I seem to be taking out enemies with ease, and leveling-up very quickly. I haven't run into an enemy that's made me sweat, yet.

And so far the story is not really "hooking" me. It seems to be steeped in military tactics and style.

I'm hoping it gets better, but if this what I have to expect for the rest of the game, I'm thinking I might trade it when I'm done with it.

Emerald_Warrior

It's classic Atlus. Difficulty will spike any minute now. Judging from what you're saying, I myself would've ditched it already. Story IS the RPG. Not into games purely for gameplay anymore (sports excluded).

Oh, this is gonna be rich. Please, tell us which ones you speak of?

Emerald_Warrior

Don't waste your time, man. I stopped caring. It'll just derail the discussion.

Does the game explain why the virus is even outside of Raccoon City?realguitarhero5

Not sure which game you're reffering to. But RE4 is more a side story than an actual canon entry story-wise, IMO.

RE2 explains how the virus progressed, followed by RE3.

I'm not saying that the other games aren't worth playing. I love the RE series, and think the first half of the series is actually better than the latter half.

But he's not asking what games' stories are worth playing through, he's asking what's essential to know before playing RE4. There is absolutely nothing essential in those games to know to play RE4. Except (like I said) that Leon Kennedy survived the Raccoon City incedent and as a result is now a special agent, which the game explains that much to you.

Emerald_Warrior

Don't get me wrong. I'm one of those guys who believe RE4 was the beginning of the end. I absolutely loathed RE5 and liked 6 better.

I'd still insist he go back and play the pre-RE4 games. They're not old enough to be considered archaic and frustratingly unplayable yet (by the general public). I miss the feel of mystery and suspense in the series. It died with Veronica. Revelations tried to bring it back and that's why I enjoyed it. I also wish they'd release the RE2 beta game lol.

Tales of SymphoniaMinishdriveby

I'm a huge Tales fan. Beat all the 3D console iterations. But I can understand why you'd stop. I tried to go back and play Phantasia/Destiny/Eternia/Innocence after beating all the 3D console games, but the combination of downgraded interfaces and 16-bit~ish narrative turned me off about a couple hours in on each of them.

What stopped me from Phantasia is the 2D feel along with a sudden spike in difficulty, made me lose interest. Tried to cheat for the story but I realized how it's utterly pointless to play after cheating because the fun is 90% derived from the battle system's challenge. Destiny's nail in the coffin for me is the narrative. It's archaic and very confusing during conversations (dunno who's saying what when). Wish they'd fan-translate the PS2 remake. I really wanna play it.

Eternia's the one I gave the biggest effort for, but I got tight on time and forgot it. I'd rather not start over. Interest is gone. The release of Vita's Innocence remake also made me not consider the DS version. Can't wait for Xilia.
