A blog to Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy

Since we are gaming, many franchises changed, we played many platforms, the way we play changed and even whole genres changed. Some new kids came who surpassed the old group of gamers with there reflexes and concentration. The market got bigger for so-called "Casual" gamers and even for non-gamers. But non matter which group of gamer you are, everyone agrees that Final Fantasy is one of the rare great constants in the gaming industry, providing a unique feeling which no one else can. In the mid 1980's, Square (now Square Enix) was facing bankruptcy. In those times Hironobu Sakaguchi decided to create one more fantasy based Role-playing game since he said that he isn't good at making action games and decided to tell people a story, inspired by Enix's Dragon Quest, Nintendo's The legend of Zelda and the Ultima series. Since he was planing to retire after that game, he decided to name the game Final Fantasy. The development team was counting 7 people, while the other team at Square had about 20. It was originally planed that the first shipment will consist of 200000 units but Hironobu pleaded the company ship 400000 and they agreed. Aside of Hironobu as designer, other noteable people working on that game werecharacters and title logo designer Yoshitaka Amano, Akitoshi Kawazu and Kenji Terada were the writers, programmer of that game was a Iranian-American freelancer programmer Nasir Gebelli and the music was composed by Nobuo Uematsu.

Hironobu Sakaguchi
This man though Final Fantasy is going to be his last game.

The game was critically very well accepted, especially in Japan selling the whole shipment. Nintendo made the localization of the game for the North American market, after the success of Dragon Quest. Unlike how it was in Japan the game was mild received in NA. The gameplay is like from any RPG from that time. It consisted from an overworld map on which you move across the world, the battles were turn-based and only possible through random encounters and the level-up system was based on experience points you get after every battle to level-up and to raise your stats which was done automatically. There was a story, but because of the limitations the consoles had in those times, it was very basic. The first installment of the series is regarded as one of the most influential early console RPG. And all that was enough to spawn a sequel, but since Hironobu planned the game to be a stand-alone tittle, they decided to create an all-new story, but keep some elements from the first one. The sequel came just a year after, and it had a more complex story, a little of character development and a lot different level-up system which was based on the using of weapons and not experience points, and it introduced Chocobo's. The main people behind the game were the same as behind the first one, but it wasn't localized to NA until 2003. The last Final Fantasy game that came out for Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was Final Fantasy III, which also wasn't localized to the rest of the world until the DS remake that came out in 2006, 2007 in Europa. The original Final Fantasy III came out in 1990 in Japan. It returned the level-up system from Final Fantasy I, it introduced the job system which allows players to change c l a s s whenever they want, and have the players an even more complex story and more depth character development.

FF III characters
Final Fantasy III was probably the first FF that had memorable characters

The NES retired, the Super Nintendo (SNES) came, and with it a new Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy IV, released in 1991 was localized to NA as Final Fantasy II. It was very story-based and many fans still regard it as the best story a Final Fantasy game had. The character development was very deep, but Final Fantasy IV is remembered also for the introducing the Active-Time battle (ATM). What not very well known is that the original script was reduced to one fourth because of the catridge storage limit. Once more, just a year after and without a NA localization, Final Fantasy V saw the light of the day. The ATB returned, and even thought experience points returned, there were not the only factor because the job system played a major role for getting stronger in this game. It is regarded as a great Final Fantasy but with less character development and story. People waited 2 years to get Final Fantasy VI, known as Final Fantasy III in NA. It didn't introduced nothing innovating, and although it had less character development then Final Fantasy IV, the story is regarded also as one of the best in the series and overall as one of the best Final Fantasy's.

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII was the first Final Fantasy in 3D

Final Fantasy VII abandoned Nintendo, and went to Sony's new console, the PlayStation. It was the first Final Fantasy in 3D, it had prerendered background, CGI animations and a lot more and to write everything that it introduced would take a whole blog. It is the best selling Final Fantasy till date, selling about 10 millions units, and it is also one of the best accepted by critics. The story is the most important part of the game, but for many it is a very hard story since it has about 200 A4 paper script without any voice acting. Final Fantasy VIII came 2 years after, and it didn't introduced anythingrevolutionary but a great story which became a synonymous for Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy IX returned to the roots and was based on crystals, like the first games but all in 3D, and it is one of the best rated Final Fantasy games. Playstation 2 came, and once more a new Final Fantasy came. It was Final Fantasy X (which was also the first Final Fantasy that spawned a real sequel, Final Fantasy X-2), which was the first Final Fantasy to introduce voice acting to the series and boosted the sales of Sony's console. It also introduced a new battle system called Conditional Turn-Based Battle (CTB), but it also was the last game from Square, which after this game, became Square Enix. That act changed a lot, since Hironobu and some other staff left and created there own studios. The composer, Nobue Uematsu did the same but he still makes music for Final Fantasy.

Square Enix
Square Enix is formed from two RPG gaints, Square and Enix

Final Fantasy XI is an MMORPG based game and by many not regarded as a true Final Fantasy and it came out in 2002. 5 years after the original release of Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII came with the biggest development time for a Final Fantasy game. It featured amazing sound and CGI animations, but it also took out random encounters and it was the first Final Fantasy were you could see enemy's walking on the map. It was very good received by critics and was sold in impressive numbers. And 4 years later we are standing here, playing Final Fantasy XIII, as the latest installment in this long running franchise and enjoying it. If we can believe to Square Enix, it is the most expensive Final Fantasy to date, but it is also one of the worst received Final Fantasy's by critics. But never less, Final Fantasy will stay an impressive franchise with a lot of hater but even more fans.

My most anticipated games of 2010

It's almost a year since the year started but just like the last year and about in the same time, I posted my most anticipated games of 2010. If you checked out that link you would have seen that 5 out of those 15 games didn't came out the last year, and 3 of those game still aren't out (and again 2 of them are in my list). Games like Mass Effect 2 and Dark Void have been considered in this because there weren't out when the list was made (Bayonneta not but if I would have made the list earlier it would be in top 10), but unfortunetly there were not able to come in the final 15. When I was collecting the games to make the list, I had 85 candidates. After the first rating (the score was based on the sum of 3 different categories which were anticipation, technical side and attraction and every categorie could give a max of 10 points so the max amount was 30 points) the number of games fell down on 36 games that got 25 or more points, and the second rating (just those 36 games) brought down that number on 21 games with a score of 25 or more, but 15 with a score of 26 or more and that's exactly what I wanted. I finally took those 15 games and rated them one more time to order them from 15 to 1. If some games has the same number of points, I took the rang from the last round and considered it.

The 6 games that were just a point from getting in this list are:
Mass Effect 2, Fable III, ModNation Racers, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Final Fantasy XIV and Starcraft II (and the last game was number 1 on my list of most anticipate games last year).

Now let us look a bit on charts which will show us on which platform the game will come out:
Platform %Platform %

Now that we saw which console have most exclusives and how many of those game will come on a praticular console I can show you the number of games per genres and age rating:
GenresAge rating

After all this statistics, I'm ready to show you my top 15 most anticipated games (the legend is Rang/Name of the game/image/comment/platform/release date/my anticipation rating from round 3 (anticipation, attraction, technical side)/possibility of moving to next year (if it's 0% then this doesn't exists) and here there are:

15)
Dante's Inferno
Dante's Inferno
So, the game which is the last on the list is an M rated Action/Adventure game from EA Visceral studio (the studio behind the great Dead Space from 2008 ). Like most of you know, the game is based on Dante's Book of the Hell, which is a part of one of the greatest cultural heritage of literature, and part of the Divine comedy. I'm really excited to see how EA is gonna make such a great book in a game, although we already know that it won't follow the book complitly, already the fact that the main character is Dante who is searching for his belowed girlfriend is showing us that, and will they bring us the charm of Virgilie (in the book he is the guide who shows around Hell) right? It's up to us too test when the game comes out!

Game of the Year

Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins
As much as those other games are great, Dragon Age: Origins surpass them with excellent story, graphics, character development, and tons of brilliant side quest which blends excellent with the main story which has it own twist and turns in the quest to rid of the darkspawns but also other threats. In the time you do that you learn a great deal about the world and it inhabitans, not just friendly. A game which should be played by most gamers and those RPG lovers between us can't call themself that if they miss this game.

See ya ;).

2 years already!

Well, first of all, it's been some time since I posted a blog or done something, I think it's been around 3 months. There was no reason for that, I was everyday on Internet, I was even visitng GS every second day, but I just didn't visited my profile. I think I will return to my former rutine of posting a blog at least once in two weeks, read your blogs, comment them (to be honest, that's what I missed at most, I just like to read blogs and then to leave long comments  ). I glad to come back :). In the last three months nothing much happend, I played most time the DS, mostly because of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days which I have beated in 80 hours, from October to November, and I really liked the game, especially the friendship stroy between the main characters. Aside of that game I just got few new games like Scribelnauts, TloZ: Spirit tracks, tec., but from the big games it was only Dragon Age: Origins, and I love it!

I still don't have a console, I remember a blog from a year and half when I said that I will get a PS3 :P, but at least my friend has a X360 so I can play some of the games. I also play Final Fantasy VII now, and I can't wait the game which got 39/40 from Famitsu and already has sold 1,698,256 units and is comming out on March 9th. I think you already know which game is it :). It looks great, and I never was dissapointed from SE. I celebrated new year with my friends and it rocked, and btw. a happy new year! This last year was fantastic when it comes to games, and I was suprised to see which game got GOTY from GS, Demon's Soul is a great game but is it really better then Dragon Age or Uncharted 2? Well, I can live with the result. I would like to make my GotY award blog but curently I don't have time.

My game of the year would be Dragon Age: Origins

I was also suprised to see a PM on December 10th which said I was nominated for GameSpoter of the year! Well I knew that I don't have a chance to get the most votes but at least I wasn't the last one :) link.

The reason why I made this blog was that today is my 2 year anniversary since I created an account on this site (yeah, I know it says it was yesterday, but I know better when I joined and I have the last year anniversary blog as a proof). It was one more great year on GS, many friends left GS, many others joined. Last year I wrote something about my best friends which I gained on this site, this time I'm not doing it but I think you people know that most of you would be in there :). I really hope we stay friends. Like last year I plan to make my list of most anticipated games of 2010 (my 2009 most anticipated games) and out of 15 games I listed last year, 5 are comming this year. And again like last year, I think to make some stats about my profile (not the one we have in the "about me" section). But let's s my stats from the "About Me" section and how much I improved since my last year anniversary:

#8 Monthly Blog - August Edition

As always I'm late with my monthly blogs :P. Well it was quite an intresting month, school started, had a lot of fun and all that comes with that. The summer is going away but I still can enjoy temperature above 20*C. The were some intresting news also, and yesterday was the 10th anniversary of Dreamcast, that console was way underrated by public. Also GameSpot's new feature "All-time greatest Video Game Hero" was also unpredictable. Master Chief lost in round 1, Pac Man head on head against Kirby, and now Sonic lossing against the same characters which won against Matser Chief aka Bub & Bob and Cloud has a hard time against Little Mac. Now let the MB starts :):

#7 of genre countdown

September 1, so2 days to go and school starts for me. I will have 10 classes/courses, but the teaching system is different then in U.S. so don't just go  :P. I will have 3 languages (Bosnian, German and English), Math, Economic Mathematic, Psihical Education (glad to have it, I can release my stress from school on it :P), marketing, Economy-Bussines, Information Technology (releated to Economy-Bussines) and the next name is only one subject and it's called Civic Education, democracy and civil rights. Now to let school behind. Like I said I made my brackets, but I would loved if GameSpot allowed us to show our brackets to our friends. My fav heroes from the list is are Cloud Strife and Kratos but my final four are Mario, Master Chief, Mario and Link, with Mario and Snake in finals and Snake winning (even though I'm not a big of Snake but I don't want Mario to win :P). And I added one more emblem to my collection for voting in the qualification of ATG :) Now let start with #7 of genre countdown:

________________________________

#7: Shooters

Shooter games are a subgenre of action game, which often test the player's speed and reaction time. Because "shooters make up the majority of action games", it is a fairly it's own genre. It includes many subgenres that have the commonality of focusing "on the actions of the avatar using some sort of weapon. Usually this weapon is a gun, or some other long-range weapon". A common resource found in many shooter games is ammunition.

Killing people is fun, but killing zombies is more fun.

For many shooters are by far there favorite genre and until the wide spreading of the 5th generation of conoles, only people who played shooters and RPG were called gamers. I myself started to play shooter when I was 12 years . Even then I played CoD, Counter-Strike, Battlefield and those games at the begin. I never was big fan of shooters but the amount of shooter games that are coming out is imense and if you don't play them you are probably missing most of the best games of a pariculary year. Without further ado let's see which are my favorite franchises out there from this genre (the one I still need to play is Unreal Tournament) :

1) Crysis
2) Bioshock
3) Half-Life
4) Medal of Honor
5) Doom
6) Far Cry
7) Quake
8 ) Battlefield
9) Call of Duty

______________________________

That was number 7. The next blog will probably be my monthly blog, and after that I'm planning to make a blog of my most anticipated games of this fall ;). Ramadan, a month of fasting and for Muslims the most holy month of the year, started 9 days ago, and since I'm a Muslim, we are fasting since the true dawn to dusk, so that means no water or food in that time. And to be honest it really can be hard to fast for 15-16 hours on a day :P.

Also, these are the genres which are still in race:

Platformers, Action-Adventure (stealth, survival-horror, open world games), Adventure, Role-Playing games (Action RPG, MMORPG, Tactical RPG), Startegy (Real-Time Strategy, Tower defense, 4X, Real-Time tactics, Turn-based strategy, Turn-based tactics) and Puzzle.

See ya and have fun ;)

#8 of genre countdown

I think it's time to show number 8 of this countdown. Also, GameSpot's feature All Time Greatest Game Herohas came to the stage where we are allowed to make our brackets, so if you haven't made yours do it now, the voting starts at September 1, and the finals are on October 15. I will only say that there are some matches already at the begin and some characters which many doesn't know (I didn't knew for 20 of those characters :P). Also, I've been playing Final Fantasy VI for SNES mostly because I heard great things about it, but the real thing that motivated me to play itwas a user, dark_massenger, who wrote just great things about it in his blogs :). And the new emblem which I got is cute :P, here it is:

What? OTS is evolving!

#8: Vechicle based games

Why vechicle based games? I didn't wanted just driving or racing, that's why. This genre is divided in two groupes, simulations, which wants to bring the reallity as close as possible, and arcade which wants to bring as much fun as possible. Because the market want's fun and not frustration because of failing, the simulation subgenre of this genre is decreasing in numbers of released games.

Arcade...

...or simulation

I'm someone who preffers challenge and that's why I preffer simulation. I'm playing this genre since I'm gaming so that's means some 12-13 years. I played many games from this genre but my favorites are:

1) Gran Turismo series
2) Need for Speed series
3) Burnout series
4) Mario Kart series
5) Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.

_______________________________

That was my number 8 :). I think my next blog will be number 7 of this countdown, but after that comes the monthly blog and I thinking to make a blog of my most anticipated games of this fall (I throw the idea away to make a blog about GamesCom :P).

Oh, and these are the genres which are still in the race:

Platformers, Shooters, Action-Adventure (stealth, survival-horror, open world games), Adventure, Role-Playing games (Action RPG, MMORPG, Tactical RPG), Startegy (Real-Time Strategy, Tower defense, 4X, Real-Time tactics, Turn-based strategy, Turn-based tactics) and Puzzle.

See ya and have fun :)

#9 of genre countdown

It passed more then 2 days when I posted number 10 so it's time to show you number 9. After the GamesCom finish I will write a blog about it, about the most important and interesting things which happend so I will probably stop this countdown for a few day then ;). Since the new PS3 slim is revealed and the price cut happend, I will buy a PS3 even sooner (at least I hope), but I'm in a dilema. I don't know which to buy, should it be the c1assic 80GB PS3 or the 120GB Slim version (HDD isn't a problem I will probably change it anyway). The price is the same but I kinda like more the c1assic look with the chrome finish and it looks more badass. Help would come good at this moment :P Please comment in the comment. The slim is fine and I could live with it and the way it looks but the "fat" one just looks better and I don't know if the slim will have some errors and technical mistakes at the begin of manufacturing. Now let me show you #9 of my countdown:

#9: Sport Genre

A sports game is a computer or video game that simulates the playing of traditional sports. Most sports have been recreated with a game, including team sports, athletics and extreme sports. Some games emphasize actually playing the sport (such as the Madden NFL series), whilst others emphasize strategy and organization (such as Championship Manager). Some, such as Arch Rivals, satirize the sport for comic effect. This genre has been popular throughout the history of video games and is competitive, just like real-world sports. A number of games series feature the names and characteristics of real teams and players, and are updated annually to reflect real-world changes.

The genre is not to be confused with electronic sports, which is used to describe computer and video games which are played as competitive sports.

File:Tennis for Two.jpg
Tennis for Two, the first game of its genre

It looks like Sport is in front of fighting. Well it's hard to talk about sport 'cause it differs between countries but I will name my favortie sports and that way you can guess which are my favorite games from this genres. My favorite sports are football (soccer), basketball, voleyball and tennis (well from this list it's sure that I'm from Europa :P), but I also like to watch extreme sports.

My favorite sport games and franchises:

1)Tony Hawk games (skateborading)
2) Evolution Soccer (well obviously football-soccer)
3)NBA 2K (basketball)
4)Top Spin (tennis)
5) Fifa (soccer-football)
6) Virtua Tennis (tennis)

_____________________________

I'm planning to make a blog about GamesCom, Cologne (or Köln how it is written in German), after it's finished so the next genre will be showed in about 5 days :). This was for the place 9, so that means8 to go. The genres which still are in are:

Platformers, Shooters, Action-Adventure (stealth, survival-horror, open world games), Adventure, Role-Playing games (Action RPG, MMORPG, Tactical RPG), Startegy (Real-Time Strategy, Tower defense, 4X, Real-Time tactics, Turn-based strategy, Turn-based tactics), Vehicle based games (arcade and simulations, it doesn't matter which vehicle, it can be cars, planes, boats, etc.) and Puzzle.

If you want you can make your predictions in the comments ;)

See ya and have fun :).

#50 blog: Genre Countdown with #10

This is my #50 blog and it took a lot of time to reach it, 19 months . I will not make this blog into a big blog like it will probably be when I reach my #100 blog. I decided to make my first countdown, and it's gonna be a genre countdown. The music & rhythim genre isn't in, and casual genres also. In this blog I will reveale #10 of the countdown and here it is:

----------------------------------

#10: Fighting genre

Fighting games emphasize one-on-one combat between two characters, one of which may be computer controlled. These games are usually played by linking together long chains of button presses on the controller to use physical attacks to fight. Many of the movements employed by the characters are usually dramatic and occasionally physically impossible. Combat is almost always one-on-one, though there are some exceptions such as the Super Smash Bros. series and Guilty Gear Isuka, pitting up to four combatants in the fight at one time. This genre first appeared in 1976 with the release of Sega's Heavyweight Boxing and later became a phenomenon, particularly in the arcades, with the release of Street Fighter II. The genre is still popular today, although it has failed to see the extreme popularity it once did.

File:Street Fighter II.png
Although Street Fighter II was not the first fighting game, it popularized and established the gameplay conventions of the genre.

I played my first fighting game with my PS1 which I got in 1999 and it was Tekken 3 which is one of my all-time favorite game ever, but since fighting games aren't as popular as before, I almost forgot this genre until I got Street Fighter 4 for PC in this month. I hope that Tekken 6 is gonna be a great game so that more fighting games starst to come out. I really like all genres and that's mostly the reason why I even love the genre which is on the last spot but the others are just better.

My favorite Fighting games and franchises:

1) The Tekken series
2) The Street Fighter series
3) The Naruto Ultimate Ninja series
4) The Soulcallibur series

-------------------------------

This was for the place 10, so that means 9 to go. The genres which still are in are:

Platformers, Shooters, Action-Adventure (stealth, survival-horror, open world games), Adventure, Role-Playing games (Action RPG, MMORPG, Tactical RPG), Startegy (Real-Time Strategy, Tower defense, 4X, Real-Time tactics, Turn-based strategy, Turn-based tactics), Vehicle based games (arcade and simulations, it doesn't matter which vehicle, it can be cars, planes, boats, etc.), Puzzle and Sport.

If you want you can make your predictions in the comments ;)

See ya and have fun :).
