[QUOTE="selbie"]They really need to re-hire Jeff. I don't know any other way that CNET can restore its integrity.nyjetsfan5000

They do need to re-hire Jeff. But, I think that even if they do, Jeff won't come back. I mean, why would he want to go back to the same employer that threw him out. He'd be in a job where he has to rate a game based on how much money they are giving the site. I wouldn't come back. But, who knows. This is all so weird

There's no way Jeff will be offered his job back or even accept the offer. This situation has gotten so messy that it's best both sides cut its losses. It's a damn shame how GameSpot went down this road. My dream back in the day was to work here too.

Exactly why we need to do this longer then one day... monday is such a slow day we need to do at LEAST a week.Themilkman418

Well from the perspective of a publisher, boycotting for one day or even a week has no effect on my ad revenue if you just come back after that. Really, GameSpot can have 0 visits on Monday or even for a week and it'll only have a small effect in the grand scheme.

[QUOTE="yian"]BTW, this Gamer 2.0 site looks sweet. too bad they are more like a portal.onemic

Thanks for the love, well we used to write news but we don't have any revenue coming in yet so we don't have the resources to pay writers to strictly work full time on updating the news, but there still is a lot of unique, original content.

So we instead give the option to read the news from anywhere, but the more support we get and maybe we will have a news team one day. We used to but we would never get it up fast enough.

You guys don't happen to be hiring are you? I am quite good with graphics and stuff. Looks like that site has all its graphics need covered, however.

In fact, Gamer2.0 looks a lot like 1up but it feels much smoother, and much easier to navigate. And gee, it sure beats the hell out of Gamespot (and all CNET's sites.)

Well our history has been a bit crazy and our former parent company received a multimillion dollar investment but we weren't fit into the budget because we didn't cover competitive gaming so we left earlier this year. That company went on to start the now defunct World Series of Video Games. We've been around for over half a decade under different names trying to finally get a break and recognized and Kevin VanOrd of GameSpot used to write for us.

We no longer have the web developers who created our current site, but we're hiring a team out of pocket (I have two jobs to pay my rent and this enterprise while finishing school) to create a brand new site that will have a lot of amazing features but we will keep a similar design philosophy.

Oh man I haven't visited the VU in a LOOOONG time. That was one of my favority UCBs back in the day.

Some of the VU guys work at gamer 2.0. It's pretty much how I found out about the site. Very smooth, in terms of design, interface, and basically navigating around the site. If I could be of any help simply pm me or something.

This damn gamespot debacle is screwing everyone over.

Our article at Gamer 2.0 has some interesting observations in regards to GameSpot and advertising. The full story can be seen here, but let me highlight this part. Viewing the Media Kit after the other 50 Cent links is imperative.

"But let's not pretend that what happened this week is free from comparison. I don't mean to maliciously call GameSpot out on this, but if you didn't know, they sell a lot of their content coverage. The front-door rotation spots, otherwise known as "gumballs," on the homepage are paid for by game publishers at $7,000/2 weeks (March 2006); and if you remember back, they absolutely whored themselves out to Vivendi for the release of 50 Cent: Bulletproof, a game that everyone and their mother knew was going to be terrible. (50 Cent: Bulletproof page, a developer interview, a positive preview, and page 21 of GameSpot's Media Kit which is made for advertisers).

The disparity between the preview and review was pretty substantial. Ricardo Torres, who wrote the preview and who we believe maintains the brunt of GameSpot's publisher relationships, wrote a glowing preview saying: "We're pleasantly surprised to report that 50 Cent: Bulletproof is shaping up to be a strong title capable of gaining notoriety because of its presentation and gameplay, not just its star." Jeff Gerstmann on the other hand, who wrote the review, gave the game a low 4.8, stating "Whether you're an action fan looking for a good shooter or a G-Unit fan in search of new material, Bulletproof disappoints across the board."The jump from being a "strong title" to being "disappointing across the board," is questionable at best. But this is the reality of it, and people hold these sites in such high regard. What they need to realize is that when a publication is put on such a lofty pedestal, advertisers are attracted to them like moths to a flame. And at that point, the thousands of dollars that are thrown around become increasingly difficult to manage, and that's when mishaps such as Jeff's take place."

My publication has sounded off on this topic, but we tried to stear clear too much on commenting on the GameSpot situation itself. To quote the article:

"This article, however, is not an exposé or look into what really happened at GameSpot this week. Rather, consider this a look at the direction of gaming journalism, advertising, and how this all plays a role in the content you read. "

Enjoy. Adverjournalism: The Role of Ad Dollar in Journalism
