I recently read this article that quoted part of a book called "The Social Conquest Of Earth" by Dr. E. O. Wilson (an American biologist known as "the father of sociobiology"). His thesis is that humans have always had, and must have a tribe, thus always identifying with a group (be it political, religious, or race). If you don't have a short attention span, I suggest reading this intriguing article.
