To preface this, I'm an Australian, and a fan of both forms of Rugby.

Recently I had a conversation with a friend about which sport was tougher - Rugby (in either of its forms) or American Football (NFL). We eventually came to the conclusion that Rugby (League or Union) was the more physically demanding and athletic sport out of the two. Please bear in mind that I enjoy watching NFL and I have nothing against American Football, this is just an interesting argument.

Here are some YouTube clips of why we came to think this (I can't be bothered typing my reasoning so I'm being lazy and providing clips).

This is a clip of one of the best Rugby players ever, Jonah Lomu (he played for New Zealand).

TOUGHNESS: This is a clip of some big hits in Rugby Union. The picture quality of the clip isn't that great, but it has some great hits in it:

Big hits in Rugby League:

ATHLETICISM:

Some dot-point reasons:

  • Rugby Games are 80minutes - divided into 2 40-minute halves, whereas American Football games are 60 minutes, and divided into 4 15-minute quarters. Obviously Rugby is more demanding in this respect.
  • In rugby, the same players play the entire length of the game, whereas in American football there are dedicated defense and offense teams, which means that players don't have to be as physically fit in American football because they don't have to last the whole time on the field.
  • Rugby players also fulfill all roles on the field - every player has to be able to defend and attack for the duration of the game, whereas NFL players only have to know their one particular part of the game, for the small portion of the game they play.
  • Size of players: Since I started writing this post, I checked out some similar arguments on the internet. A lot of people who support the NFL in this argument declare that their players are larger and fitter then Rugby players. An average figure quoted for large NFL players appears to be around 235lb-245lb. In the metric system, this equates to 105-110kg. Jonah Lomu (from the first clip above) weighed 120kg (264.55lb) and was far more athletic than many NFL players. Lote Tuqiri weighs 227lb and is also far more athletic. These guys are wingers. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/4395169.stm
  • The rules of rugby are much tougher, allowing for much greater and continuous physical confrontation between all players on the teams, compared to the NFL which is entirely stop-start in nature and doesn't allow for continuous tackles and physical contact between teams. Even Rugby League, the more stop-start of the two Rugby's is on a completely different level when it comes to free-flowing dynamic tackling gameplay, compared to American Football.

So which is tougher, what do you all think?

Even a blind man can tell the difference in gameplay between 99, 03, 04 and now 3.

I wouldn't call it 3, it was more like number 2:lol:

:? Where's the humour?

I'd contend that the Total War series (by the Creative Assembly) is the video game equivalent of chess, moreso then Madden.

No, because Halo is actually good.PBSnipes

 Indeed. Halo has done more for games then Linkin Park has done for music, that's for sure.

I think that quality =/= quantity, and the Wii needs more than, well "more".

It needs better games. Not more games. Better.

And I can actually see the PS3 having a decent holiday this year; it seems to finally have some decent software coming out... though it may be a year too late.

My opinion is that the Wii did need to get that large number of games on it before any good games would start coming out. It needed to prove that the console could support large numbers of games & that the consumer base would buy the games that came out on it. It has done this, so now I think it is entirely likely that we will start to see some really good titles coming out on the Wii - albeit mid-2008 onwards. So I think that we will start to see an increase in the overall quality of the titles on the Wii from mid-2008 onwards.
