Definitely even if I do treat the review as a sort of broad overview to the experience. There are times that I can relate perfectly with the reviewer and times where I decide I have nothing in common with the author of a given critique on a point for point basis. But generally speaking, they are useful in pre-purchase research.

I dug mine out in the recent past and did my best to play it pretty exclusively but honestly had a harder time than expected. I don't know if it was a framerate issue or what, but after a few hours it was making me feel a little motion sick. Especially Ecco the Dolphin but even much slower games like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Still a classic system to me but staring to show its age technologically.
A failure by Nintendo to recognize what it was about the original Wii that made it the top seller amidst vastly superior technology.
What really buried Saturn was Sega's debut of the thing. They literally announced it, like all companies do, before the masses at the CES then said at the end: "Oh and by the way, it's already in stores now".
The media had no opportunity to hype its arrival, to build a proper console war. Worse still they burned bridges in the process by leaving out key distributors in the process. Kay-Bee stores literally dumped all of Sega's stuff and refused to carry anything from them again. Factor in Sony's media machine that the Playstation would become and really the Saturn was buried in the US right from the get-go. And I was an adopter who had to make the choice at launch and actually chose the Saturn over the Playstation.
Dreamcast couldn't undo the damage Sega had already caused to themselves by then and this isn't even taking into account the disaster that the Genesis would inspire in later years with add-ons and failed support there. It was all about burnt bridges.
Gamestop says 60% of gamers said they wouldn't purchase a console that didn't allow used contwent to be played. Hopefully the powers that be are listening.
The more I'm discovering, the more unsettling it's becoming. They all sound to have catches and drawbacks. Depending on cost, right now the Steambox is looking pretty appealing.
Not to state the obvious, but when compared side by side, the deals on used PS2s (and PS1s) absolutely smoke what seems to be going on with the PS3. Just browsing eBay there were original Playstations bundled with connections, controllers and game lots for $15-$20. I personally picked up a used PS2 with a few games, 2 controllers and the connections for $35 a few weeks back. Haven't encountered anything that comes close to these prices on a used PS3.
Not sure what to make of this next generation so far. The rumors aren't painting very game-centric ideals so far; everything from requiring constant internet connection to voice activation to free-to-play micro transaction scams.. So far I'm hoping a lot of these news releases are jumping the gun a bit. Can't say I'm eager for a lot of this crap.
