Happy Holidays,

I nearly forgot to add: Desktop Defense.
Maybe not most addicting of all time, but right now I'm addicted. World of Warcraft should probably be on there, too.

Lets hope they keep the control scheme from the Gamecube rather than trying to shoehorn some Wii controls onto the title. Definitely a title to keep a close eye on.
I think it easily deserves it. In fact, I'm playing it right now! :DDesktop Tower Defense is the free GotY. :)

Every year my wife and I agonize over giving gifts. I say keep it small and thoughtful, but her family always makes me feel unintentionally obligated to buy big or many gifts. I definitely feel like, when I've received a $200 item in the previous year, I need to give back something impressive the following year.
What does everyone else think?
I'm not sure how do you expect me to answer that. Obviously I don't know that, I don't work for Valve, but quite honestly, I don't see what it matters how it started, the important thing is how it ended. It's not one game, I'm not arguing that it's one game - it's three games that make up a larger, coherent whole. What I can tell you is that Valve is a rather small company which employs only 150 people. If you ever played a Valve game, you might have noticed in the credits that no positions are ever listed, just a list of names. They all pretty much work together on everything. I know for a fact that Valve's writers Marc Laidlaw and Erik Wolpaw worked on both Episode Two and Portal. Hell, the same exact woman lends her voice to GLaDOS in Portal, the Combine Overwatch in Half-Life 2 games and the announcer in Team Fortress 2. As for it being fair to other games, I really don't care. It's not Valve's fault no one managed to create such a fantastic and varied package. This is something that should be encouraged, not the other way around.UpInFlamesEasy now! Some great discussion, and I truly believe Orange Box is one of many titles that deserves Game of the Year (in fact, I would have a tie if it were my choice alone). There is no way to predict how Gamespot might consider a release that includes multiple titles, but I think they would separate out the older titles from the newer ones, and vet them on their own merits, which are many. Portal on its own would be a serious contender for Game of the Year, even its Flash version was awesome. Yeah, enjoy that link, because it's hot.
I know about the writers and for there had to be some overlap within the company to get these games done cause as you said its not that large. I am not saying we should not look at it as one package, in every way I think Orange Box should be praised for what it does, it should be reviewed as one product, but when you start doing awards it gets iffy to me. To me when I talk about game of the year its an award to give to a game, not a productand thats the one time you have to look at Orange box as a compilation.Awards have rules, it should be a level playing field, at least that how I see them. All sites need to make their own rules, but to me it should be one game never a compilation. Product of the year sure, it can win as many of those awards as it wants, but not all those games bunched together to tag team the game of the year awards.dvader654I think there is no question that Orange Box deserves gaming product of the year. Wait, wait, um, Rock Band? Man, gamers really had their hands full this year!
As much as I'd love to see Oblivion win this one, I think it's painfully obvious it's most likely going to be Halo 3.ZanninseiAs stephant_6 stated, I find it hard to believe a 2006 re-release has a shot.
I have had just about enough of your faux-NiGHTS love. If you really loved the game you'd understand. AND I'll thank you to stay away from my Romulan Ale.Robio_basicNerdiest reference in the thread. I give you the Geek of the Year award, and penalize you two bars of Latinum, to be deposited in my Ferengi checking account.
What's this? Useful information? Seriously, thanks, this is a great running tally. I might endorse Bioshock myself, but its linear gameplay and easy difficulty kept it out of the running. For me, it was its lack of replayability that put the final nail in its coffin, though I tip my hat to its awesome art direction, amazing storyline, cool weapons, and creepy atmosphere.I'm trying to see something about the GotY's; have there been any others announced? If there's no link, I'm relying on a pm or post in response to another thread. X-Play's is tonight.

Where was Uncharted?Grizzly_7Uncharted scored an 8.0 on Gamespot; great, but probably not up for Game of the Year.
Stuck at 55.31% at Level 21. Just an FYI, though it appears the staff is already well informed. ;)

It's going to come down to eitherA World in Conflictor Galaxy. The other main nominees just have a little bit too much in common with one another, being of the same genre. That just makesWiC and Galaxy stand out that much more. But if I had to say which one, I'd lean towards Galaxy. Conciously or not, Gamespot loves to give "GOTY" awards to Nintendo. Last year Oblivion grabbed the title so I don't see Nintendo getting locked out 2 years in a row.Robio_basicI actually disagree about the preference towards Nintendo on Gamespot's part. If anything, I think the site is incredibly unpredictable. If Serious Sam and Freespace 2 can take the crown (Freespace at least definitely deserved it), I think any highly rated game is a real candidate.
