KHAndAnime has the right of it: An inexpensive HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) will vastly outperform most any PC surround sound system. Some of them are comparable in price, too, starting around $300 for a decent Samsung (HT-E5400) and $500 for a more robust Onkyo package (HTS-5500). If you're feeling adventurous you might be able to pair a set of Energy speakers with a Yamaha receiver.

You'll notice that most reputable reviewers don't even recommend a PC surround system. There isn't a single set that makes C|Net's top five, and you won't even find PC speakers in the pages of magazines like Stereophile.

Since you're using it for home theater, I agree you probably want a surround system, but look at the home theater market rather than those designed for PCs and you'll get a much better value.

Good luck,

Boz

Based on your original comment, what is wrong with the audio right now that you feel it warrants an upgrade?

Happy gaming,

Greetings almighty Gamespot overlords:

My suggestion, dear masters, is but a humble one. I would like to have a way to track developing stories on a particular topic. For example, the developing story on 38 Studios credit issues in Rhode Island is fascinating (and sad, unfortunately), but Gamespot links the story into Amalur, despite that it really concerns the studio and its upcoming title Copernicus, rather than their previously released title.

This can be accomplished in a lot of different ways, whether gamespot were to use unique Follow identifiers like it does for games today (leveraging the existing code), or using the Tag system to create unique identifiers for the stories. It'd be great to receive updates for developing news to my updates feed, regardless.

Happy gaming,

Boz

[QUOTE="MlauTheDaft"][QUOTE="ispeakfact"] It was never renowned for being awful, bub. Perhaps by today's standards, as it is just a qte, but in its hayday, it was praised all around.ispeakfact

Yes it was, once people got over the prettiness it became aparent that the game was just plain bad.

Nah. Was praised for quite some time. But once the age of the fighter took hold in arcades with SF2, DL, SA, and DL2 weren't played anymore.

dragons-lair.jpg

When Dragon's Lair was released in 1983 it was praised for the amazing FMV (full-motion video), for Don Bluth's animation, and its comprehensive voice acting. No other game came close. Remember, the Atari 2600 was the most widely adopted console at this time. The NES had only just been released in Japan. You can't compare FMV and voice work to Adventure and Pitfall.

This was the only praise it received. You played this game because you wanted to see more of the story unfold, and Dirk's hilarious deaths, not because it actually had compelling game mechanics. If anything, it was despised at the arcade's I visited for being insanely difficult and highly repetitive.

Note that fighting games didn't take off until Street Fighter II was released in the early 90's, almost eight years after Dragon's Lair.

Happy gaming,

Boz

Neither will get you good sound reproduction :\MonsieurX
Judging by the site Diwashb linked, he or she's in Nepal. This will limit selection, and we may not recognize brands available locally. I never heard of Edifier, before, but it looks like it's based out of Beijing. I cannot speak to the quality of their products, though they did display a pair of speakers that look like horns ripped off a demon. Of the speakers available from meroit.com, assuming you are limited to that site, I've read the most praise for the Creative Inspire line, though as I said, I have no experience with Edifier. The fact that the cabinet of the subwoofer is actually wood on the Edifier is a good sign, but without hearing them first-hand or having researched their products, I couldn't say anything beyond that. Honestly their selection is not that great. I would consider other options either locally or online. Good luck, Boz

Is it good to put the subwoofer on the floor or on the bottom of my computer desk?

I didnt know subwoofers produced any noise till I watched a bass test of a 2.1 setup. I was wondering what a subwoofer does. I thought it was just a box that makes bass come out of the satellites. What does a subwoofer do and where should it be placed?slipknot0129

Alright, alright: Folks are getting a bit all over the place now.

You said you wanted speakers primarily for listening to music. In general, if you are looking for high-quality, accurate audio reproduction on a budget, you have to sacrifice somewhere. At under $200 you'll generally have to make the decision to either go 2.0 or 2.1, and that decision is made by how much you like bass.

The Klipsch Promedia 2.1 is probably the best value in a 2.1 computer speaker system. I won't go into detail on why it's so good, since that is easily found in a Google search for reviews of the system. It will perform best if you're using your PC speakers for multiple applications: music, movies, and especially video games.

You will get better audio fidelity from a 2.0 system like the Audioengine A2, M-Audio AV40, or KRK Rokit RP5G2. These are going to be your best options for music, but you will lose some punch in the bass department. These are your best options for listening to music.

If you are considering hanging your speakers on the wall, consider some of your options at Parts Express. It is a reputable retailer with good to excellent prices on speaker parts, wiring, and accessories.

Good luck,

Boz

You're not wasting it by going optical. A lot of the processing - such as environmental effects - passes through, such as EAX. You can compare the DAC section of both amps; you can find the specs on Sony's site. Boz

If you have the space, the Sony is going to be your better option.

  • Depending on your PC, you will want to run either an Optical or Coaxial cable from your sound card or motherboard digital audio output into on of the digital inputs on the back of your Sony (it has two optical inputs and one coax input).
  • Then, from the Sony, run your left/right speaker wires to their respective speakers
  • Run a single-channel RCA interconnect to the subwoofer.

This would be the optimal setup, and I expect you'll be very happy with the output.

Happy gaming,

Boz

Man it's a bummer I have nowhere to try them out. Are the MMX300's closed, semi-open, or open? I forget. I was looking at the Beyerdynamic DT 770's 880's and 990's but not sure which will give me exactly what I am looking for. Also I plan to have one headset dedicated to PC and one for console hence the search. I agree on the whole mic front. I will look into the Blue yeti. Push to talk is good to, but whenever I need to mute, I can also just unplug the chat cable ;) (not making fun, but its what I do lol) Thanks for the input guys and how in the heck did you snag a pair of HD600's for $220?!? O_o That's Awesome, but I'd need a DAC/amp to give these the right amount of juice. Shoot If I find it that cheap I'd go for it to :)Steel_Rain777

I'm not sure how much more I have to offer. Beyond what I've provided you can take a look in the Head-Fi forums on specific model details. I know the DT770s are closed-back, and sound wonderfully rich with deep but not overpowering bass. The DT770 earpads are among the most comfortable I've used (remember the MMX300 are basically the DT770's with a mic). The DT990s are open-back, if I'm not mistaken.

Good luck,

Boz

Alright, I'll just have to put up with it until I find a way to make more money, I guess...The-Apostle
If those receivers are too expensive I would strongly recommend using Craig's List. You can find some pretty amazing stuff if you know what to look for; you near Milwaukee there, Packers fan? Give the following a look-see, if so: http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=receiver&catAbb=sss&srchType=T&minAsk=&maxAsk=&hasPic=1 Good luck! Boz
