I know I have Irish, Spanish(European not to be confused with the term "Hispanic", used mostly for Native Americans here in the States), and Galician ancestors in this country dating at least as far back as the 18th century. I also have my suspicions about some German ancestry. This is the US after all and most whites are of German descent whether they know it or not.
I know my Spanish side participated in the American Revolution in the invasion of the loyalist British Florida colony while allied to the Patriots.
But yeah, it's more than a bit misleading when you refer to British subjects as if they were British people. That's an important distinction that must be made when talking about this time period.
During the Revolution Louisiana belonged to Spain. That would be like referring to all European settlers there as Spanish just because they were all Spanish subjects.
