Since we are talking of recent games:-Starcraft 2 Campagin-Running around on stalker CoP with a Dragunov-Playing ME 2 as infiltrator (i love games with snipers)-Alien swarm can also be fun sometimes.
-Fallout (the classic isometric ones, made by the old ""Black Isle" and not this "Bethest"a "3D"crap)-Homeworld-System Shock (would also be nice if we could make a remake of SysShock 1 with the bioshock graphic engine)-The Legacy of KainAnd many others that i can't remember.
Try playing it in cronological order:First "Clear sky" (with "Sky Reclamation" and "Faction Commander" mod)Second "Shadow of Chernobil"Then "Call of Prypiat"

Kinda hard to point one game in specific.-Final Fantasy tactics were groundbreaking because it was the first strategy FF ever made.-Vagrant Story was the first (and only till now) action game based on the FF world.-Splinter Cell and his new stealthy aproach to 3th person modern shooters. And the list goes on.
There is some not so official "patchs" (if you want to call it like that), just google for a *cough*nocd*cough* patch.
Fear was the first AI that i saw, which actually used some strategy, and somehow both ME had a decent AI.
