[QUOTE="savagetwinkie"] actually it is, from what I heard they were using something derived off of bulldozer. If anything they probably have a modified version designed around being a console CPU. Just because its not probable doesn't mean its not possible.savagetwinkie

Well what I mean is not plausible. I don't see any benefit in going with that many cores, and Bulldozer has underperformed drastically. 16 cores just seems like a complete waste.

bulldozers performance has a lot to do with current software being mostly single threaded and the OS's task scheduler, you can't apply a more embedded environment to a desktop environment and expect hardware to even perform remotely the same. Also you should realize that they wouldn't use an off the shelf version of the bulldozer, theres no benefit to using a full desktop processor when the environment is less general and focused on running games.

Of course they wouldn't use an off-the-shelf component, but how would it be possible to create a gaming CPU with 16 bulldozer cores? I would assume that that would be too large for a console, as well as being too expensive, unless I'm wrong again.

I assume that if they were indeed to use bulldozer, they would opt for an 8-core variant, as it would surely be smaller and cheaper for a console.

Nope, not true and I don't even think it's possible to have 16 cores in a console, regardless of the size and power of them.

markop2003

AMD has a 16 core processor on the market. 16 CPU cores doesn't make a whole lot of sense as on consumer systems that means multi threading which means it'll be a real pain to program.

Those aren't for the size and power of consoles, though. Like I said up above, I'm sure you could create a 16-core processor for a console, but the cores would be so weak and small, that it wouldn't make any sense, and therefore, it wouldn't be a valid and possible solution to a console CPU.

And anyway, that 16 core Bulldozer is for servers.

Silly video. Nothing has been confirmed at all, and that goes for the CPU too. Power7 was just some speculation from that press release.

But it goes without saying that the Wii U IS more powerful than current gen. Just wait until e3 until we find out some more concrete facts (hopefully).

[QUOTE="TyberZannxxxx"]

Almost forgot to say this in my previous reply.

Wii U couldn't possibly be weaker than Xbox 360/PS3 if it can already run next-gen engines (so far, that would be Konami's Fox Engine and Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4). Whoever made these claims about the Wii U being weaker than Xbox 360/PS3 is retarded.

TyberZannxxxx

Actually we don't know if it can run UE4 or Fox Engine. But there is no way it could be possibly weaker, simply by the fact that the console has to render 2 screens (Tv and tablet) meaning that the hardware is already more powerful.

http://mynintendonews.com/2012/03/19/metal-gear-solid-creator-talks-about-making-a-wii-u-game/

In this article, Hideo Kojima stated that the Wii U can handle Fox Engine. And I am certain that the Wii U can handle Unreal Engine 4 as well.

Didn't see that article before. But I wouldn't be so sure about UE4, considering we don't even know if it can run Samaritan. No one knows much of anything about UE4 except that it was seen demoing on a Nvidia Kepler card.

[QUOTE="Grey_Eyed_Elf"] You have said what I've been saying for a while now... I'm completely aware Nintendo rushed things and left everyone unprepared. I have never said Nintendo's first parties wont look better than current generation games I'm simply questioning the lack of third party talk of games that aren't ports.Grey_Eyed_Elf

Oh, I misinterpreted your orignial intent of your post, sorry. But still, my point stands, wait until e3. It seems that Nintendo has some sort of NDA out there, simply because Wii U logos and whatnot are not even appearing on certain games we know are coming out. Developers have repeatedly said that they can't really talk much about the Wii U. I'm not sure why a game like Toki Tori 2 was able to announce it was coming to Wii U when other games (not announced or mentioned at e3) can't even say anything (such as Project C.A.R.S.). But yeah, it's true we don't have too many exclusives other than Killer Freaks (not low-budget) and possibly Lego City Stories ATM. Who knows what e3 will bring.

That was my point. From a marketing point of view its either bad news about the hardware or they just don't have anything... its a completely rational view. E3 is soon and all will be clear but I'm prepared for the first party games and am certain that third party games are going to be non existent other than ports.

Well at least ports would be a step up from what we have currently with them. I think, though, from a marketing point, they don't want to draw attention away from the 3DS, since the 3DS did have a rough start early on. Shifting focus to Wii U with them allowing a bunch of companies and themselves to start announcing games and features now doesn't seem like such a good thing when the 3DS is now starting to sell well. There will be plenty of time for announcements in the coming months before launch.

[QUOTE="Grey_Eyed_Elf"]

Why wouldn't they?...

Like you said no one knows as of right now. We will know very soon and its just a choice you make... fall into unrealistic hype from a console that is that successor to the most casual console in history or look at they state of the industry, what we have seen from the companies past and look at what we do have?

What do we have?

  • 2 Tech demos showing casing nothing better than current hardware
  • A Mii game
  • Footage of Killer Freaks that look absolutely awful and obviously low budget
  • Interviews that are inconsistant
  • A trailer that focused more on the abilities of the controller outside of gaming

Yet some people expect exclusive games that look better than anything ever seen that are high budget titles from third parties?... so far nothing is pointing to that in the slightest.

Grey_Eyed_Elf

No, just stop. They showed nothing because the hardware wasn't ready. The two tech demos were made on an underclocked, alpha dev kit in a short amount of time. The rest of the games were just showing off the controller's functions and abilites. All interviews have been consistent, apart from that Vigil one the other day, but the man who said it doesn't even work on the Wii U. Killer Freaks was still running on 360 hardware (It was initally a 360/PS3 game. In the footage you can even see 360 controller buttons on-screen). Vigil themselves said they only received dev kits a couple weeks prior to e3. And IIRC, someone working on Killer Freaks at Ubisoft said e3 was the first time he had seen the controller even. Wait for this year's e3 before judgement.

I don't know about 3rd parties with high budget exclusives right away, but I have no doubt Nintendo's first party will look far better than anything seen on consoles.

2005 was the year Microsoft launched the 360. They were able to showcase the 360 and its hardware because it was mostly ready and done. The Wii U during last year's e3 was not anything like the 360's situation.

[QUOTE="bonesawisready5"][QUOTE="Grey_Eyed_Elf"] That's because you have a Mario avatar. My reasoning on the other hand is based purely on the state of the industry. Developers sell their games in trailers/interviews.Grey_Eyed_Elf

So why would the developer of Braid say it has a lot of RAM, and why would Crytek say the hardware makes them happy and excited when each of those devs have nothing openly planned for the Wii U nor have they developed for Nintendo platforms in recent memory? I'm not saying its one or the other, but it could go either way and no one is right ATM.

Why wouldn't they?...
