For the First Time in A Year...

I am sort of officially back for now.  I have not really updated my page, I mean, V for Vendetta is on my banner!!!!  Here is hoping I get the energy to put effort in the page and not get bogged down by AP English.

Microsoft's Press Conference

Score: A-

I never thought I would be saying this, but the new features and games are starting to convince me to get an XBOX 360.  It is strange, but the Live functionality and some games like Halo 3 and Too Human are really getting me excited.  Props for the people who devised the clever gta4 thing, and props to FEAR for coming out on the 360.  My comp isnt beefy enough for it.  The only hiccup was the enormously boring section describing VISTA, the new os that I will not be upgrading to for various reasons.

Nintendo's Press Conference

Score: B

This conference was pretty good in terms of presentation and deliverance, but something seriously troubled me about the Wii. It seemed from the demos as if the people were having difficulty wielding the new controller. The test guys were missing targets, and the shooters looked painful to control. And while I am not an advocator of completely insane graphics above all else, many of the Wii games looked like crap visually. Still I have to give props to Nintendo for striving for something different. Hopefully, they can pull it off.

Sony Press Conference

Score: C

I honestly could not believe what happened. After a 50 minute delay, the best Sony could show was not enough. Going into the night, I expected to be blown away by marvelous graphics and terrific games. What I got was the Xbox 360 with a higher price point ($600?) and crappy games. The only truly worthy title shown was Resistence: Fall of Man, but I have come to expect that from Insomniac, so no surprises there. Truth be told, I was impressed by the free online service, new eye toy, and the wonderful controller design. But what good is a cool controller (admittedly a Wii rip-off) if the game line up stinks. I was expecting more of a showing from Sony, and the results were disappointing.

Rebirth in PC Gaming

Last week, I home-grew a computer, and I have had a rebirth in PC gaming.  The shooters available to me, Half Life 2 and Battlefield 2 in particular (I know, old!!), are really awesome.  If anybody has any suggestions for other games I would be happy to hear them!

MOVIE REVIEW: V for Vendetta

SCORE: A-
My first movie review is a goodie, much liek my first CD review.  V for Vendetta is a movie both written and produced by the Wachowski Brothers, who created the Matrix.  While this movie is nothing like the Matrix, it can be just as easily recommended for its characters and story as the Matrix can for its action sequences.
Granted there are action scenes in V, but they are few and far between.  Instead, the movie relies on the characters V (Hugo Weaving) and Evey (Natalie Portman) along with an anti-government storyline to sell tickets.  And the movie works.
The acting is incredible as every actor/actress really embodies the character he is designated.  Even though V is hidden behind a Guy Fawkes mask, Weaving makes him the best role simply by doing a magnificent job conveying emotion without the luxury of a real, human face.
The plot is all about the people standing up to the government, and many references to modern day events are made.  You name a person or subject in the news, and it probably makes its way into the movie somehow.  Even though some people don't care about all of this symbolism, the overlying story features all of the complexities and love of many other classics.
The only real downside to the movie is its length. It is just under 2 and a half hours long, and since there isn't a terrible amount of action going on, it will get boring occasionally.  But the intriguing story and plot twists help to cancel out the movie's length by getting you to the edge of your seat in suspense.

CD REVIEW: Arctic Monkeys (Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not)

SCORE:  9.5/10 (MUST BUY)

This is my first cd review, so I figured I would start it off with a bang.  The Arctic Monkeys are a band out of Britain, and their style and energy is a force to be reckoned with from track 1 to 13.
The cd starts out kind of stale actually with the only hit-or-miss track on the album, "the view from the afternoon".  After the song is finished, the band takes no time in letting you know that they are good.
The second track, "i bet you look good on the dancefloor", showcases the energy flowing from both singer Alex Turner and the rest of the band.  It truly shines and is a song that will have you playing on repeat and bopping your head.
From there, the tracks get more heart-pumping and loud until the cd hits its halfway point on track 7, "riot van".  "Riot van" is the only song on the album with a generally slow, morose feel to it.  I got worried that the second half of the cd would be gloomy, but was shut up by the next track, "red light indicates doors are secured".
Some of the coolest tracks are featured in the second half, namely "mardy bum" (a light-hearted, poppy song), "from the ritz to the rubble", and especially "when the sun goes down".  "When the sun goes down" is the best track on the album and is one of the best songs I have heard in the past couple years.
The whole cd flows with original and catchy licks, cool bass lines that rarely follow the set path of the rhythm guitar, and drums that in some cases pound away ferociously with unrelenting vigor.  These guys are good, and they may just lead the second coming of the british invasion.

COOL TRACKS:
  -when the sun goes down
-i bet you look good on the dancefloor
  -mardy bum

Brand Spankin New

Well gamespot has gone and made the new version of their site, and it is awesome.  It seems harder to navigate, but I will get used to it.
