I've havn't heard anything of the sort, so I think your source might be wrong there.

You don't have to play half-life, but find the story somewhere and read what happens, however I would reccomend it - it is a brilliant fps, and I would play it just for that.

There is some bad language, but infrequent, and not frequently strong - the blood can be turned of, however I think that only applies to HUD blood (for when it is turned on you get blood on your HUD). I have not noticed any major blood, and if you have played Halo 3 or Oblivion (no clue about what ratings they have in America), both have more gore, try the demo out, judge for yourself.

It's very long - you can get hundreds of hours, I played it manic for a year or so (racked up close to 1k hours), simply with mods etc (however it ended up a bit like mmos, you just do something over and over to level up), but you should certainly get 150 hours.

The Witcher; it's deeper, and more fun in my opinion, with a rather good story.

Try to put your profile and save games in a safe place and re-install, then try the save games again, I'm not sure if any problems are caused by having a profile made before patching the game then continueing; try making a new profile, start a game, save it, and try to load it, if that works try to go to one of your save games (note: this is speculation as I have not attempted to change a save game from one profile to another), and change the profile (they seem to be named (profile name)_(save number)_(map name)_(time in map), try to change the profile name to the new profile.

I couldn't see much crafting in Runescape to be honest, as you could always get items as drops - hellgate somewhat, as you were always getting stuff to mod your weapons, also the witcher somewhat for the herbs to make potions, but can't really think of a crafting intensive game in such.
