This is just not true. Like others have mentioned, phones and tablets these days cost more and they are considered outdated in a year or two. These consoles will have support for the next 6-8 years, just like the ones in the past.
Not to mention that both companies are considering different price points/models. Sony with the eye bundle will probably be like $459ish, and if Microsoft figures a way to release it without kinect, that will probably drop to $399 to compete with Sony's base model.
It really isn't a ridiculous price. Besides, both companies are now looking into different models and price points so they will have a model for everyone.

@anomaly3001 I feel the same way! Actually, the privacy settings (including the kinect) are fully customizable. They can shut whatever shit off that is supposedly "watching you".
