But that's all Al Pacino ever was in the majority of his movies after this. Over the top. His acting itself is overrated, then you have the movie. It's not over the top in a good way. Big Trouble in Little China was, hell... even Street Fighter the Movie is. Scarface is just bad, and it's long, you just end up bored and sick of it halfway through.Giangio
The whole point to Scarface is that Tony Montana climbs every step of the way on his rise to power simply by outbluffing other people. Just by seeming like he's dangerous, powerful and influential, he manages to become dangerous, powerful and influential. A movie with a low-key or realistic Tony Montana would be completely pointless.
And people severely overstate Al Pacino's decline. Glengarry Glen Ross, Donnie Brasco, Angels in America, The Merchant of Venice, People I Know, The Insider, and even Heat (Pacino's character may seem over the top, but he's an on-edge cop that uses coke to keep himself alert) - these are not over-the-top performances, and they're all good ones, some great.
Overrated by a the general public, underrated by those who just think they're cool, it's just a good movie. Thing in common between most people is they misunderstand that the movie is intentionally over the top.ox
Bingo.
