[QUOTE="D1zzyCriminal"]There is a commentry from BF3 and BlOps2 devs about their approach to the frames per second debate. But this is why I think people can sink so much time into CoD on consoles. Its the feel and fluidity of the entire game. You used to have to play on a high end PC to get that kind of multiplayer experience, but CoD hit a sweet spot for a quality experience on consoles.Zubinen
My current system is more than a year old and it can run Battlefield 3 on ultra settings at 1080p native consistently at 120 frames on my 120hz monitor, the GPUs and CPU are already one generation behind and yet I can get maximum smoothness on the most demanding multiplayer FPS on PC. A GTX 460 and effectively any CPU can run MWF3 on max settings at 1080p native at 60+ frames and that's on a 2 generations old low-end GPU, but I digress... COD is top fish on consoles with good reason, higher frames is part of it(technical graphics don't matter much when you're sitting far away from a big TV) but it's also designed very well around the controller unlike BF3 which is more like a PC game ported to consoles without sufficient changes to make it fully playable with a controller.Another thing is that COD generally delivers quite well with SP/COOP something none of the competition has done, regardless of what you can criticize about its multiplayer, along with that is the success of previous COD games and memories of the "golden COD"(whichever COD you enjoyed the most) that grab some http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rEmvI3UH_M&hd=1&t=42s and along with that is the whole "What should I buy Johnny for Christmas this year?" and of course one possible answer to that is obvious from the thread title but it isn't like the franchise didn't build itself up to where it is now :P
Im well aware (as a PC gamer myself) that it is very easy to get a high quality gaming PC on a budget this generation. Since the technology (software) is moving forward at a slower pace than the hardware. CoD made its popularity on consoles this generation, by offering what was previously though of as only being available on a PC.
I'm not saying 60FPS is the ONLY thing that makes CoD popular, but its definitly a reason I find it fun to play. I like the CoD engine, and would like to see it applied to a slower paced game like Rainbow 6 or Counter Strike. CoD 4 and WaW were slower, but something changed with MW2.
Next gen it mill be interesting to see what comes out on top when the playing field is reset and new tech is introduced. Will CoD still be able to differentiate itself if everyone starts running 60FPS? Or will we get devs focusing on increasing scope even further?
