Behind the Rockband: Boston

Boston (Album-1976)
This album is incredible, especially when you consider that it was primarily recorded in a basement in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Tom Scholz never picked up a guitar in his life until he was done with college - yes, he got a masters degree from MIT before he became a rock star. He started to build his own basement studio and practiced bass, guitars, and organ until the epic Rockband 1 anthem "Foreplay/Long Time was born. This song, one of my favorites, was the FIRST song Scholtz ever wrote. Thanks to overdubbing, he plays all the bass and guitar parts of this album. He also mixed and produced everything on the album

Brad Delp does all the singing, reaching high notes that most can only dream of. His voice has a certain kind of mysticism in it that makes every lyric heartfelt. Along with Jim Maseda's drum tracks, THREE people did 95 % of the work on this album.
Look at the credits to any album. I bet you there are more than 15 people who work on most albums. THREE people did 95% of the work on this album, all recorded in a basement. Only two songs on the album have all five original members playing different instruments.

The insane thing is how great the album sounds. Every beat was re- recorded by Scholz to be perfect. The album uses complex harmonies to create layers of sound unlike anything else in rock at the time. There can easily be a part of a song that has three guitars, one bass, three harmonies, a drum track, and an organ going at once. The diversity and harmony was revolutionary.

Every song rocks, every song is a cl assic. I especially recommend "Peace of mind" and "Foreplay/Longtime" for some musically creative tunes in Rockband.

The whole thing is available in the Rockband store. Download it, jam the solos like you're in a basement, and sing high enough to make your friends laugh.

WAIT! I have a better idea!

Instead of doing straight up album reviews, I'm going to be profiling different artists who I enjoy who are currently on rockband.

Behind the Rockband: Boston coming soon!

I'm back! + Album Reviews

Hi everybody!

That last blog series wore me out. Lots of planning and writing.

But here's a new series: Album reviews! Yes, I love music, namely albums. So prepare to have your sences pummeled!

D_West's Favorite Game of All Time

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GC)

This was hard. Really hard. And I do have to say that my decision is biased. Yes, Ocarina was the first Zelda game I played, but this is the first Zelda game I really enjoyed. I think that this game made me a gamer, it left that kind of impression on me.

1.3

When I was a lad in 2003, I got the Ocarina of time master quest preorder, played that game for a month (The original version that came on disc), beat it, and I was stunned. I had never played a game that deep before. The huge world, seeing Hyrule in two different time periods…Great stuff. I remember seeing what the castle town looked like, seeing the ReDeads for the first time, the evil looking mountain when you come out of the temple…Chilling stuff. But I always thought the game didn't go far enough with the destruction Hyrule went through after 7 years. I wanted everything to be blown up or somehow corrupted! I wanted big crags of rock and craters everywhere, with all traces of civilization gone. Kakariko village should of just been destroyed too.
Ah well, what about Ocarina of time hasn't been said? Its great, something all gamers should play, yadda yadda yadda. It happens to be my 3rd favorite game of all time. The restraints of my countdown does not allow one series to occupy three spots, so this can counted as my 1.3rd favorite game ever.
So, Wind Waker is….Let me get back to you on that.

1.2
The Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess is my 1.2nd favorite game. The wolf aspect was fun, horse combat was a great addition, and the game looked awesome with some great lighting effects. Midna was great character, too. The game was also pretty long. It had a couple more dungeons than Wind Waker. It lacked….Something. I can't explain it. Maybe it was the unsatisfying ending…or how it annihilated the continuity of the franchise. Something about this game made it incredible, but not as magical (Did I just use that word?) as Wind Waker.

Watching the End Credits to the Wind Waker is something I can still remember. I remember I astounded I was at the game.
Well, let me get started on why this is my favorite game. The graphics are incredible, everything is so detailed. The great sea is huge, gigantic. When Everyone said that Hyrule in TP was big, I was like" This game is half as small as Wind Waker! The sea is so big, and theres alwas treasure to collect. There's just WAAAAY more stuff to do in your free time than there was in Twilight Princess. Unless you like collecting impossible to find bugs (Which I did)! The game's dungeons are really creative, having to do with wind, fire, light, forest….yeah, I know that's not too original, but the dungeons broke the sterotypes with puzzles that were unexpected. This game had some of the hugest puzzles in a Zelda game. The combat and weapons are the best. The new items, such as the grappling hook and the deku leaf are really fun to use. The sword combat is also better in this game than in twilight Princess, because of the awesome batlle music and the ability to parry enemies. I LOVED how you could pick up an Enemies' weapon! Why did they take that away? Let's not forget the bosses. They put the other Zelda Games to SHAME when it comes to how massive and creative these bosses are.

japanese
My favorite part about this game is the ending, an ending so awesomely and creatively satisfying that it boggles my mind. Fighting Ganondorf is so awesome. It's such a fluid sword fight you forget you're controlling it, unlike the jerky sword fight at the end of Twilight Princess. Link plunging the Master Sword into Ganondorf's head is the highlight of my gaming life.

This game was solid from its humble beginning to its incredible endgame. This game is so good, it makes me wonder why it didn't get so much plaudits. Maybe this will give it the recognition it deserves.
I can only hope.

Thanks for reading C_west's favorite game of all time! I'm so glad that 20 people will read this, and it will make their lives better. Forever. And Ever. And cure all known sadness. Because it will. And it has.

C'mon, man!

Two comments on that last blog? Really? it took me a long time to compile this list, and the next blog post(coming Friday) is going to be pretty big. I hate to sound whiny, but a comment here or there would be really appreciated. I'll make SURE to comment you at least 3 times over the weekend if you do. I thought putting a blog up every day or every two days would be good to get more people reading, but, hey I guess not.

Watch out for my #1 game of all time. HINT: its not nintendogs

D_West's 5 favorite game #2

Rock Band (Multi)

Yes, this is the most shocking pick on my list. And yes, they count as one game to me, since RB2 was just a refinement of RB1 and the DLC and original soundtrack can be transferred.

Well, I love these games. I mean, I really have never played a game where everything was done so RIGHT. The soundtrack is really the star of the show. I mean, there are some real gems in here, and there's not really a weak song (Except for De-Luxe and A jagged Gorgeous Winter)

Some of my favorites(To play)

Everlong

Spoonman

Teenage Riot

Seven

Cherub Rock

Highway star

Dani California

Pleasure(Pleasure)

Alive
The Trees

The drums are my favorite part. You get to play almost the exact drum pattern on expert difficulty, and its a true challenge! Playing as a band is always fun. You're always trying to save your bandmates, or help the singer out if they don't know the song. It really shows how fun it is to be in a real band.

The note tracks are top-notch, and really put Guitar Hero's to SHAME. They are simply fun to play, even on bass. I love the character customation and the never ending list of DLC, so you can keep on rocking out in your fake band.

Here's some songs I'd like to see in the future

No One Else-Weezer

Money for Nothing-Dire Straits

The Spirit of Radio-Rush

Know Your Enemy-Rage Against the Machine

Some Oasis songs

Lonely Nation and Stars(It would be epic if you could play them both)-Switchfoot

American Dream-Switchfoot

Some older Green day songs

The Pretender-Foo Fighters

Tune in Friday to see what my #1 favorite game is! You might be pleasantly surprised...........................

D_West's Top 5 games #3

Tales of Symphonia (GC)

Or if you're nintendo power...(GNC)

140 hours. I have played this game 3 times, with a combined total of 140 hours that is 5.83 DAYS I have played this game. Wow.

Well, this game is even harder to explain than advance wars. Its hard to even scratch what you do in this game. There is so much darn stuff. Well, I'll try.

You play as Lloyd, a spiky haired dude with a cool voice with double swords. You play as 4 characters at once, but control Lloyd directly. There are 8 characers, who are all really different from eachother. This makes the game really fun, as there are so many unison attacks and combos and strategies due to these varied characters.

Oh, and the story. According to my mathematical calculations...there are about 2000098674564000001162818217827172 characers. Yeah. By the way, this game will take you a LONG time to beat because of its huge story. When you play it the first time, you will play for about 16 hours and think you've won. But its only 1/3 of the game!!!! Man, its a great game, though

The battle system is the main reason of its greatness. It is done in real time, so no waiting around for turns. You control 4 characters at a time, leaving 3 characters to the computer(Which you can tweak to an insane amount of control). You can switch to any character on the fly. You can finally customize your character to a degree to which I have yet to see in a video game.

140 hours. Totally worth it. I love this game!

D_west's Top 5 favorite games countdown #4

Advance Wars: Dual Strike

This game will shock you. Shock you with the sheer amount of stuff to do. I have never played a game so deep. Its Fire Emblem on steroids, with tanks. The game is set up like a giant chess board with two combatants with two goals: Dstroy the other team outright or capture their HQ, way on the opposite side of the map. The strategic battles in this game can easily take you 3 hours to beat.

The game is set up on a grid with a rock paer scissors-like system of what units are stronger against eachother. For example, a Bomber plane can destroy any tank, but it can be wiped out by long range missles and anti aircraft untis. A battle ship can weak havock on ground units, but can be taken down by subs, which can be annihilated by crusers, which can be annihilated by battleships. Its a Rock Paper Scissors game with 30 different kinds of rocks paer and scissors. And you can build the rocks and paper and scissors again and again. But you have to capture cities to make money, and you have to make infantry to capture the cities, but you need to do it fast, because a tank is headed for you, and you need to build something to protect your infantry, but you have no money......and so on.

This is a REALLY complicated game.....

There are so many maps, it would take you months to play them all. The campain is fiendishly challenging, but so satifying once you find the right CO's to do the job. The Co's are also very well balenced, although I love how secret character Haichi can build units super cheap.

This game is pure epicness in game form. It's for the hardcore only, but if you can delve into it, you'll find a satifying game like no other.

(Don't get the game advance wars: days of ruin. It makes the CO powers a chore to do, so the game is unforgivingly hard. And kinda annoying. I much prefer this game.)
