@darkelf83: there are ways to design games to take advance of people with addictive personalities, Activision had a research division for this purpose to implement it into Destiny for example. On top of that they can stretch things out to keep playing times longer, such as save/load times, slow movement and/or long distances between activities and so on.

Not only is paying devs by how long users play games TERRIBLE for developers, it also grants extreme financial incentive for devs to make their games as predatory as possible, so it's hazardous for users too.
