Even a very smart person will appear to be an idiot if they've had a bad education and bad educations are in no short supply in this world.
Believe it or not, there are people out there who are just irreparably stupid to the point where even the best education couldn't fix them. And by "out there" I mean all over the place.

Are you kidding? The Hobbit is a joke compared to the rest of the lord of the rings trilogy. There are a number of moments in the book that demonstrate that. If Stephen Colbert has a role in any of the films he would fit right in. You almost sound like you haven't read the book? lol.
Aside from trolling people on the internet, nothing. There is no good part of being an atheist, it's denying God and nothing good ever comes from that. Most people that are atheists are only trying to be rebellious and "cool", these kids will grow up eventually.
The other group of people that are primarily atheists are those who have been given a bad view of God or taught the wrong message, basically just harmed or had a bad experience with religion in their life, so they think all religious people are the same. They simply need to get out more and meet the good religious people.
God is about love, he is not an angry tyrant in the sky that is trying to kill people.
