I agree with square enix on the fact that this gen is too long and drawn out, but not for the same reasons.

Consoles used to have a shine. Low prices, convenient, easier to play. For people that didn't want to spend thousands on a gaming PC, consoles were a saving grace.

Now, the reality is, consoles are expensive, have terrible customer service *shakes fist at EA*, and are so outdated that they are about 8 times behind the best computer. This, merged with the crappy system pushed onto devs that only hurts the amount of games and the quickness of fixing games has literally made consoles the last place for any new developers to look and all the big moneymakers to shine, in which they can basically dictate anything and everything because they have the money to waste.

PC's now have sales that can be close to 80% off or more, almost all games have some sort of controller support, theres mod support, and on top of all this, a good PC can cost about $500 and still be able to run crysis two with full graphics.

Consoles are outdated and boring, and devs dont want to mess with them because how are they going to deliver the best experience on something that can't give everything they've got? I mean, look at steel battalion. Great idea, would have changed gaming forever, but look at what the problem was. It certainly wasn't the game, but the gimick motion controls that microsoft totes around like its the best thing since sliced bread. The reality was, Steel Battalion wasn't better with kinect, because kinect is an overrated piece of hardware only useful to hackers.

If consoles honestly don't come out with a new gen next year, I quit. I'll get Guardians of Middle-Earth because i love Action RTS games, but thats about it. The rest are gonna be on PC anyways.
