I think the marketers who marketed Dead Space 2 thought that it would be funny, but it wasn't. A funny game ad would be one where they utilize the game itself and just add voices (machinima, obviously) so that people at least get a good look at the game itself, rather than old ladies. I noticed they have done this for several games in the past (Halo:ODST, Mass Effect 2, there are more) and I got a nice little laugh.
Personally, I don't buy games until I've thoroughly researched them, because I'm not going to spend 6 hours worth of hard work on a crap game. I'm sure the casual audience may be swayed by simple tv ads, but I think most people here won't be.
Marketing to the general public is easy, marketing to hardcore/serious gamers is much harder.
