So apparently if you've preordered Farcry 2 at Gamestop you get six (count 'em - 6!!!) extra missions plus a fold-out map.
I preordered a long while back. High score!!
And on Gamestop exclusives-why is there no other main chain of gaming retail stores? Gamestop just has a monopoly? Or is it safe from that sort of business label as certain stores are still retaining their property names somehow (ie: EB, Funcoland, etc.)
And even more on top of that, but that isn't exactly the same subject and of which I should probably write a separate blog-where did all the arcades go? If I go down to the boardwalk at the nearest oceanfront area there will be arcades, but they will be slacking in:
1) New games!
2) Preserved classics!
3) Staff that actually gives a *%$@!^
At one point (that point being over 8 years ago) around my way there were two specific arcades and while they weren't spectacular they stayed current and in good shape with steady customers/gamers for quite some time. Then, through either mismanagement and just general lack of upkeep they both steadily fell into disrepair and the eventual closing up of the shop!
Now, Dave & Busters is around. But my problem with Dave & Busters is that....it's Dave & Busters. Largely (at least, in my experience) the crowd that parties there is: there with slim to no interest in serious gaming, are parents that brought their kids to a place where they can run around unattended, drunk and high teenagers that look to disrupt others gaming or damage the machines, or middle-aged people on first dates that weren't clever enough to pick a better spot to get to know one another.
I'm all for kids in arcades-I used to be one. I have nothing against those that don't care too much for gaming, but that dabble. I hope that those people have at least a level of respect for others in this sort of environment. But for an arcade to be a superficial hangout or meeting place for those uninterested in the finer aspects seems tedious and a cumbersome atmosphere for a serious gamer, at best. I'd say more power to the people behind the whole D&B idea, but I really don't want to see any more of them pop up anywhere else in the country.
To me an arcade should be a social hot spot for those that are interested and have a vested interest in the games, and that-first and foremost-are there for gaming! Not to take shots of vodka and be eating the special roast beef dish of the day that a single mother who dropped out of college and has a pill popping habit suggests to you for dinner.
But maybe I'm jaded and uninformed!
How do you all view these establishments? What gaming stores do you have around your way? What sort of outlook do you have towards arcades?
