Gamecube was actually a pretty awesome console, but I think a lot of people were expecting more Nintendo 64 games on upgraded hardware. Instead they got Super Mario Sunshine, Star Fox Adventures, and Wind Waker (not that these games weren't good). Dropping Rare probably didn't help.
Backwards compatability, none of this "used game block" crap that's been rumored, hardware easy to develop for, and a less buggy online interface.
Aside from cranking up the A/C, all you can really do is make sure it's sitting on a hard surface with good air flow.
PS3 received the worst Skyrim port (by far), but I have no idea if it was patched afterwards. You'll probably experience freezing and crashes, but it's really not going to cause any hardware damage to your console.
A 1080p television is 1080p regardless of whether it's 24" or 50."
For purely gaming, larger televisions can be a detriment because your eyes have to travel a further distance to notice small details. There's a reason you don't see people playing on giant tv's at competitive gaming events.
If you're just sitting on a couch and playing casually though, I guess large tv's can be impressive.
