You can start to have a pretty good idea of what the overall feel of a game is going to be like when you see movies and shots from the game a few months before it is going to be released. They aren't going to drastically overhaul the engine or change the design.
All you're going to get are minute graphical upgrades. I think it is fair to judge Halo 3, while being aware that those aren't final and improvements will be made. Huge improvements? No way
A lot of good posts here. I think we were all looking for a breathtaking new version of Halo. You would think the jump to the new system would allow them some revolutionary new addition to the series. So far it looks like they are upping the graphics, bigger maps, more players, and a few new gadgets. The graphics are going to be unimpressive. You aren't going to change the way an entire game looks in the last few months. It's going to look like a shinier bigger Halo 2, so get used to it.
I showed my friends a video of the Halo 3 beta on XBL, and all of them thought they were watching Halo 2 video. I thought the quote by one of the developers was really indicitive of their lack of effort. "We want it to atleast be as good as Halo 2, that is the bar." Well I would certainly hope the next game in the series is ATLEAST as good as the last one. They would have to completely screw up Halo 2 not to be better than it.
So far the combat looks identical to Halo 2. The player movements, death animations, speed, and overall feel are nothing new. I'm all for staying true to the series, but where's the innovation? Man launcher, seriously? I'm trying to stay optimistic, but the early signs are worrying me that the final chapter of the greatest console shooter of all time could be a huge dissapointment.
