As thier is only a few days left in 2006, I figured I'd better hurry and post my top 10 list. So here it is:
Final Sequel's Top 10 of 2006
10. Brothers and Sisters- A real good dramedy along the lines of Desperate Houswives . Its not a great show. Sometimes it becomes to wrapped up in the political side of the stories, and the dialouge can be boring at time. its also not the type of show where you think throughout the week, What's going to happen next week?? But it gets better with each episode.
9. Kyle XY- This was the surprise hit of the summer in my book. I strongly believe that if a show is scifi based and not on SciFi its chances of surviving its first season, let alone getting picked up are slim to none. As this was on ABC Family, I thought it would be pulled before episode 6. The show had just the right mix of angsty teenage themes and mystery of who Kyle really is. The season wrapped up real nice with a cliffhanger that has fans longing for season 2.
8. The 4400
7. Avatar: The Last Airbender- This is probably the finest example of American animation ever. But its not the look that draws people into this cartoon adventure, its the story. While the main plot is old and has been used many times, the way the story is told is totally different. This season saw Aang befriend the ' The Blind Bandit' Toph, master earthbending, search for his lifelong friend Appa, and uncover a conspiracy in the Earth Kingdom. Not what you expect from a show Nickelodeon, eh?
6. Heroes- I've praised this show before in my blog and what can I say that hasn't already been said? Sure it sounds alot like X-Men and like another one of my top 10 The 4400. But once again look at how the story is told. Where as the 4400 focuses more on the bigger picture, Heroes focuses more on each character. Developing the characters so far beyond what they were in the pilot before bringing them together. And the curves they throw. One thing I love about this show, is the way its shot. It gives off such a dark and ominous mood, that just goes so well with the show.
5. Desperate Houswives
4. Toonami Jetstream- Okay so technically this isn't a show, but I had to put Jetstream in the Top 10. This video streaming site from Cartoon Netowork's Toonami block offers three animes that had never before been shown in the U.S. as well as classic Toonami favorites. I love Prince of Tennis, oddly enough as well as Mar. Hikaru No Go is a hit and miss. And it brought back great shows like Samurai Jack and Megas XLR.
3. Commander in Chief- Okay this show came out in the fall of '05 and was unjustly cancelled this May, but I loved it. This was a great drama that had a chance to be the next West Wing if not better, if it had only been run right. When you go through three different showrunners in under a year you know somethings wrong. Along with the fact that ABC didn't know what they had and did a horrible marketing job, lead to this shows early demise.
2. Battlestar Galactica- BSG is more of a soap opera/military drama than a SF show. Sure you have your space ships and alien races but alot of the show is grounded in today's world. The biggest wepon the fleet has are nukes, no futuristic bomb. Infantry troops use M-16s and other current firearms, not lasers. BSG is a gritty show not intended for children The show has many alagories in it to what is going in the world today. From the War on Terrorism and the War in Iraq to the political, religous, and social problems of our world.
1. 24- How could this not be my number one show. 24 keeps me on the edge of my seat for 24 weeks. Season 5 was the best yet. The plot was drasticaly different. For the first part of the season Jack was actually trying to stop terrorists from using WMDs on Russia. It then changed gears and had Jack trying to uncover a plot that lead to the highest realms on Washington, D.C. And ended with a wonderful cliffhanger, well it was cliffhanger at the time.
Honorable Mentions: Weeds, Eureka, Bleach, Doctor Who, IGPX, Family Guy, American Dad!, Invasion, Psych, The Boondocks, and Veronica Mars.
So there it is. My top 10 of 2006. Hopefully 2007 can measure up!
