Had a friend who was a recruiter for 2 years, you'll be surprised the majority of people who do join the army don't do it for their country, people actually join cause they don't know what to do with their lives,need money for themselves or to support their family and I've even heard people who just plain like to shoot **** also join. So people do join for odd reasons.

Force is force. Punishment has been objectively shown to be an inferior mode of discipline as opposed to positive and negative reinforcement. If it's used a a primary mode of discipline rather than a supplement to reinforcement then the results are going to be less than ideal.
