It couldn't compete. That is why it failed.Rocky32189

It failed due to it's poor reputation with consumers and third party developers, and not because of the console itself or the quality of its games. In fact, launch sales were very, VERY strong for the DC, and it had a great first year in the market overall. Had they had the full support of the various 3rd party supporters that held out on them, then it DC would've likely last at least 2-3 years longer in my opinion. Even in spite of its technical inferiorities compared to the other big 3 consoles, it was still a powerful machine capable of putting out some awesome games like Soul Calibre, Sonic Adventure, and Shenmue. Besides, if the Wii can survive as the highest selling system on the market for almost 3 years, even in spite of the fact that it has the "weakest" hardware of the 3 consoles, then I don't see why the DC couldn't have done the same. In the end, it did boil down to a lack of consumer and developer support, and not so much hardware limitations.

What was the main reason(s) for Nintendo not including HD and DVD player capabilities in the Wii anyways? Was it due to time constraints in order to get the Wii out in time? Or was it due to the fact that so much money had already been invested into R&D for the motion technology?

I think Capcom has already beaten the series to death...

Business talk aside, was the Dreamcast a good enough machine to have been able to compete for a lengthy period of time with the likes of the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube? We all know that it was Sega's horible business practices that eventually lead to their demise in the hardware market. Had that not been the case though, and Sega actually had the necessary third party developer support, as well the confidence of the consumers, do you think the DC would've had the ability to make a pretty long run against the other consoles?

Personally, aside from the fact that the DC didn't have DVD playing capabilities, it was definitely an awesome machine with the ability to put out some great games (as we saw from it's 2 years in circulation). One would have to think that it was a powerful enough piece of hardward to go the long haul against the big 3!

Classic Mega Man games from the NES/SNES era. No matter how difficult and frustrating they could be, I absolutely loved every single one of them. The Mega Man Anniversary Collection on PS2 is easily one of the best games I've ever spent my money on.

Never played any of the 3D games, but in terms of the classic 2D lineup, I'd have to go with Sonic 2.

I already understand that visually the Wii version is gonna be inferior to the 360/PS3 versions. At this point you learn to live with that and disregard it all together. At the same time though, i really do hope they include all the same features at least. I loved COD: World at War on the Wii, but it bugged the hell out of me to see that the 360/PS3 versions got the Zombies bonus game while the Wii version didn't.

I'm pretty low maintenance, but this is what I'd like:

-HD output

-Bigger selection of virtual console games

-DVD/Blu-Ray playing capabilities

-More titles targeted towards the older gamer

I think this year will be the "make or break" year for the Wii so to speak. Over the past few years they've managed to hold onto the #1 spot in sales due to their revolutionary motion sensored control technology, which is obviously what set them apart from the rest of the competition. Now that Sony and MS are attempting to make a move into that realm as well, it may take some steam away from the Wii, due to the fact that it may no longer considered so "unique" in the current market. If the Wii can weather the storm, and still remain competitive in spite of MS and Sony's new technological advances, then the console will surely stick around a few more years (at least 2-3). If on the other hand it ends up lagging behind the other two consoles, then it wouldn't be too far-fetched to expect a Nintendo to pull out something new by the end of next year perhaps.

In any case, Wii owners can take comfort in knowing that 3rd party developers are adapting more and more to the Wii technology, which will thus likely result in better 3rd party titles. The fact that Nintendo is also gonna release a slew of great games this year such as Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M will also provide some reassurance to Wii owners everywhere.
