Gigastormz Blog

Goodbye vacation, hello Xbox 360

Well, my vacation is officially over :( but it ended with me getting an Xbox 360 on Sunday!:D  I will write a longer blog about my initial impressions of the system but it's pretty freakin sweet so far.  I picked up the premium edition (or whatever it's called), the one for $399.99 and the 20GB hard drive.  I got Ridge Racer 6 (can't have a console launch without Ridge Racer, right?) Dead Rising and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.  Ridge Racer 6 was cheap, $19.99 and from the first couple races it's worth about $19.99, no more.  Although I'm sure I'll like it once I get into it.  R4 is my favorite racing game of all time.  Dead Rising is very fun but the survivor escort missions are a huge pain in the ass.  Finally I loved Marvel Ultimate Alliance from the second I started playing it (I'm a big comic book geek).  Haven't done a whole lot with Xbox live but I love the downloads.  I'll write a longer and more detailed blog soon, until then time to play some more 360!

I've been robbed

Last night I got home from work and saw a notice from the office that said all cars must be moved from the garage by 7:00 AM so they can install additional light fixtures, or you will be towed.  I thought, "oh great, thanks for giving me only 12 hours notice."  Normally this wouldn't be a big deal since I leave for work about 7:00 but I park outside.  I park my old car in the garage and it doesn't work.  Let me give you a little background before I go any further...

Last December my girlfriend crashed my 93 Pontiac Grand Am into a median and the rear driver's side wheel came off.  I had the car towed to my dad's so he could fix it (I'm not a car person).  I needed a car right away so I leased a 2006 Chevy Malibu.  I've been driving that ever since.  My dad evenutally got the car fixed and I drove it home and parked it outside.  I had to move it into the garage in February after a snowstorm so they could plow the parking lot otherwise I'd get towed if I left it there.  Since then I decided to junk the car since I couldn't get it started and it wasn't even worth it anymore since I had a new car plus it was just rusting away all over.  My dad and I tried to get it running so I could drive it to the junkyard instead of them towing it there cause I'd get more money for it that way.  After several attempts we couldn't get it running and I am planning to junk it next week while I am on vacation.  Now back to the present...

I called my dad to help me push it out to the parking lot.  He got there about 8:30.  We got down there and decided to try one last time to get the car started.  My dad said "hey what's that paper on your windsheild"  I looked and it was a notice from the office saying that MY spot isn't mine and I need to call them asap.  WTF?!  I have lived there over a year and now all of a sudden they are saying the spot isn't mine.  I turned the key and the car wouldn't start.  That's when I noticed my $300.00 Pioneer car stereo was gone.  There was no evidence of a break-in and nothing else was missing.  I had the rear windows open a crack for some air, otherwise mold would grow inside.  I guess they must have reached down or used something to unlock the doors and get it.  We pushed the car outside and then I noticed someone had written on one of the windows in the dust, "Move your car f***er"  Fabulous.  In the process of moving the car, my dad accidentally tore off one of the side panels.  No big deal, I'm junking it anyway.  I went upstairs and left a message at the office since they were closed.  Man what a horrible night.  I was actually more pissed about them saying MY parking spot isn't mine.  I called the office today and straightened everything out about the parking spot.  They are going to review the security cameras and see if they can find anything.  They only go back two days though and the theft could have taken place as much as a week ago.  That's the last time I went downstairs to check on the car.  I guess it's mainly my fault for leaving the windows open a bit.  I never do that with my new car and I always lock it.  That's got an alarm system in it so that's nice.  I will be filing a police report when I get home from work.  I don't expect them to catch the person or get my stereo back but I want to at least report the crime.  I'm not that pissed about the stereo, since I probably wouldn't use it again.  But I wanted to keep it since it was a nice one and I could have put in in a car in the future.

Man, I can't wait to start my vacation.

System shortages

When comparing the previous gen system launches (Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube) to the current gen launches (360, PS3, Wii) was it really that hard back then, as it is today, to get a system at launch?  When I got my PS2, I pre-ordered it at EBGames several months before launch.  I initially paid the minimum deposit, and then every couple weeks I'd put down more money on it until I had the system completely paid off.  I went in on launch day and picked it up along with Ridge Racer V.  I had no problems at all getting a PS2 right away.  No waiting in long lines in the store when i picked it up and no camping outside hoping for even the slightest chance that I might get a system.  Nowadays, even when you preorder a system you aren't guaranteed one on launch day.  What's the deal?  Why all the system "shortages?"  You'd think that they would have set the launch date far enough in the future to have plenty of time to plan ahead right?  Maybe with all the increased media coverage the video game industry has gained in the past 5-7 years and the almost "mainstream" status video games have acheived, the console manufacturers purposely fabricate news stories saying they won't have that many systems available at launch so they create a huge demand for their product.  Whatever the cause of the huge demand, it certainly makes it easy for people to resell their systems on Ebay for thousand(s) of dollars (I'm looking at you 360, and PS3) cause they know that there's someone out there that is willing to pay anything to get a new system right away.  Its really sad too.   The scalpers are taking away a spot in line from legitamite people that want the systems for themselves.  It was nice to see that Nintendo had plenty of systems to go around on launch day.  My girlfriend works at Toys R Us and she said they only got 4 PS3s but they had 35 Wiis.  People were just walking in off the street picking up Wiis.  It looks like Nintendo had a great launch.

I still haven't gotten any of the current systems yet but I plan to get at least a 360 when I get my tax return next year.  I'm still dying to play Dead Rising.  Nothing looks that interesting to me on PS3 or Wii right now, I'm content with Guitar Hero, Super Robot Taisen:OG2 and FFXII:D

Mail-in Rebates are a Scam

On sale for $29.99!! (after $20 mail-in rebate). Have you ever seen this in an advertisement for a retail store? Lately it seems like every time I see something I want that is on sale, there will be the small text below that says "after mail-in rebate." I get pissed off every time I see that. Why? Because I don't trust mail-in rebates. I've never, ever gotten a mail-in rebate back. I bought a $300.00 car stereo for my 1993 Pontiac Grand Am GT (which is now in the junkyard) several years ago and I was supposed to get a $50 mail-in rebate. I never got it. And by the time I realized I never got it, I had totally forgotten about the rebate in the first place and I just didn't care anymore since it was years ago.

Have you had any bad (or good) experiences with mail-in rebates? My most recent one was for $3.00 off a 100-pack of CD-Rs at Micro Center. I never got my 3 bucks but it's no big deal since I knew I wasn't going to get it and the CDs were cheap anyway. I remember a long time ago they had some investigative news story about mail-in rebates on one of my local news stations. I think I remember them saying you have to call and constantly harass the company if you want your mail-in rebate. I could be wrong but that's what I took from the story.

I always check out the weekly ads of your big box retailers, such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Target and others, for good deals and in the past few weeks, the sales have been pretty decent. I haven't noticed as many mail-in rebates. Maybe it's because Christmas is coming up so they decide to give the best sales possible. I hope that Green Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) brings some great deals on video games, movies, music and anything else I'm looking to purchase.

Just finished Need for Speed Most Wanted...

...and I put up my review.  I gave it an 8.8.  My Xbox has been screwing up a lot lately, and it seems to be mainly with EA games.  I would have beaten this game a week ago if I didn't have to redo a race every 10 minutes.  I was about to cross the finish line in the 5th and final race against Razor and then the screen froze and gave me the "There may be a problem with your disc" blah blah blah error.  I was sooo pissed.  I cleaned off the disc and I tried the game again.  Luckily this time I was able to beat the game without it screwing up. So anyway, check out my review if you want.  I think now I'll be playing Super Robot Taisen Original Generation and Guitar Hero.

Need for Speed Most Wanted got harder..

Here's an update on my progress in NFSMW.  I made it up to number 2 on the blacklist, only Razor Callahan left to beat.  The game had a big jump in the difficulty level starting with the number 5 blacklist racer.  The races haven't been too hard but the police chases are a pain sometimes.  I've gotten a lot better and learned that its easiest to drive on the highway for the pursuits and when you go through roadblocks use the speedbreaker, even as you collide with the cop cars.  Otherwise your car most likely will go flying and you'll flip over and get busted.  I should be able to finish the game Saturday or Sunday, then I will put my review up after making a few changes in it (see previous blog post below for the review).

While I was watching Slither today, (pretty crappy movie) I was playing Super Robot Teisen Original Generation again.  I was really looking forward to this game when it came out, I even reserved it at Gamestop.  But I never got into it.  I have no idea whats going on in the story.  It's like Final Fantasy Tactics but worse.  Way too much going on.  Although it started to get a little simpler.  Some dude on my team is now a traitor.  I'm up to level 10 now and I think I'm starting to get into it finally.  There are WAY too many menus and there is no tutorial.  This is a game where you need to read the instruction guide and playing Fire Emblem or Advance Wars helps since they are similar.  The animations when you attack a unit are the coolest thing in the game but they get repetative and time consuming right away.

That's all for now, later...

I got a Raise!

Yesterday was my one year review and my boss gave me a 7% raise!!  I'll be getting about an extra $140 per month after taxes.  This is great cause my roommate moved out on August and money has been a little tight lately.  With this raise it's almost as if he never left.  He was paying me $200 a month for rent and then a third of the electric, cable, and internet bill.  Since he left the electric bill has lowered significantly, since there isn't an extra person in my apartment.  And I cancelled the Directv service he had on the tv in his room so that saved me a bit of money there.  Maybe I should start saving up some money for a 360 lol

Desensitized to Violence

I think I have become completely desensitized to violence. I saw "Saw III" on opening night this weekend and it didn't scare me or gross me out one bit. I've seen the first two Saw movies, and in my opinion each one is gorier or more violent then the previous one. But, seeing someones face blown off, limbs torn off someone's body or someone's skull being smashed with a sledgehammer doesn't have an effect on me. Nothing shocks me anymore, it's all entertaining. Nowadays when someone is decapitated in a movie or a game I'll say "cool," "sweet" or "nice." For example, in video games, I enjoy executing thugs in Manhunt. I love hearing the sound the crowbar makes when you jam in it a thug's skull. I'm amused by using the chainsaw to tear out the insides of my oppenents by sticking it down their throats. Does anyone else think they are desensitized to violence? Is this a bad thing or a good thing? I know it's different in other countries. Some movies and games get banned if there is too much violence.

How have I become desensitized? I never watched scary movies when I was a kid. My parents wouldn't let me. But I've always played video games and my parents didn't care what I played. It's weird because I know my mom didn't want me to watch Masters of the Universe because she thought Skeletor was demonized and my dad didn't want me watching GI Joe because it was about war. But I could watch Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Both of which probably had as much violence as MOTU and GIJoe. I dunno though, but I remember in 5th grade my summer school teacher had everyone watch the movie Pet Cemetary. There is a scene in the movie where a very old woman is locked up in her room and you see that she is just skin and bones. There is a shot of her back and you see all of her ribs as if you're looking at a skeleton. I remember I got so scared that I left the room. I also felt guilty because I knew my parents wouldn't let me watch that movie. Surely back then I would have been scared seeing someone's head getting blown off, right?

I never got into horror movies until I was 21 or so. Sure I had seen most of the Friday the 13th flicks and all the Nightmare on Elm Streets but those never scared or shocked me. I checked out all the Romero movies and none of those scared me or grossed me out too much. Maybe something other then movies desesitzed me? Maybe it started for me, with the game Robocop vs Terminator. I remember if you got a certain weapon (grenade launcher or something similar) you could make a guy explode and his legs, arms and head would fly off. I thought that was cool. Gradually over the years the violence would get more realistic with the advancing technology. I've always enjoyed shooting up demons in Doom or blowing the heads off zombies in Resident Evil 2, executing thugs in many creative ways in Manhunt and most recently (althought I haven't gotten a 360 yet but I know I'll love it) plowing through hordes of zombies in Dead Rising. My quesiton now is: do video games have the ability to desensitize someone to violence? I think they do.

I have the need, the Need for Speed...

So I've been playing a lot of Need for Speed Most Wanted for Xbox lately. I'm now about 45% of the way through the career mode, last night I beat the chick with the Mustang and the crazy chick with the Mercedes. Next up is a dude with a Lamborghini. It looks like the game might start getting hard now. It hasn't been too much of a challenge but it's been a lot of fun so far. For the last 4 or so Blacklist racers I've been using the Porsche I won from the "Baron." It's got great handling but it's also fast.

I won this game on Ebay a couple weeks ago. I won and paid for the Black Edition but the disc I got is the regular NFS:MW. I emailed the guy and he said he was sorry he screwed up and that he will send the correct disc but I still haven't gotten it. It's been almost a week now. Everything but the actual game disc itself, is the Black Edition. I got the bonus DVD, the instructions, case and cardboard sleeve that all say "Black Edition" but the idiot either purposely gave me the regular version or mistakenly put the regular one in the case when he shipped it. Either way he's a moron. If I don't get the disc by this time next week I'm leaving him negative feedback and filing a report with Ebay/Paypal. I didn't pay $30+ for the regular version of NFS:MW when I can buy it brand new at Wal-Mart for $19.99.

Continue reading if you want to read my review of the game so far...

The game is better then NFS Underground 2 in some ways but it's worse in other ways. They really concentrate on the whole story thing in Most Wanted. They dabbled in it a little in NFSU2 with the Brooke Burke hosted comic book style story but in this game it's full motion video "real time esque" actors. They put some filter over the video that makes it look like you're still in a video game and not watching a movie. Some of it is dumb but it's kinda interesting. The most annoying thing is every time the game starts up there is this stupid message about driving safe from the hot chick who's your "girl" in the game. She looks so annoying in her damned sports bra lol

There's a good selection of cars in this game, tuners, exotics, and some luxury cars. The one thing that dissapoints me is where's the Skyline and Civic? Those are standard tuner cars and the most popular IMO. And why the hell are there so many frickin Audis?? There's like 5 different ones! EA kind of dropped the ball there but they do have enough cool cars to make up for it. It's nice you can even put body kits on the exotics. You couldn't do that in Midnight Club III and I don't think it's been done in any other games. I'm also a little disappointed about the amount of custimization of your car. In NFSU2 there were tons of parts to buy for your car. Now there are only 5 body kits for each car, maybe 20 spoilers (not counting carbon fiber ones as different parts), 40 roof scoops, 30 hoods, 50 rims. It's nice that each body kit is different for each car but I like being able to pick and choose my front/rear bumpers, side kits and fender kits like you could before. I'm not too big on rims. I could care less about spinners, neon, graphics and stuff but I love the way the cars look with the body kits. They seemed to cut down on the whole tuning part of the game and instead put in the cops and the blacklist system.

You start out driving a BMW M3 GTR (the one on the cover) and you race Razor Callahan (whom you've probably heard the GS crew talk about quite a bit) He has a black Mustang GT. There is a cutscene where you're racing him and some cops show up. Then you jump right into the race, but you can't win since it's part of the story. The story flashes back and you race a couple fools with your BMW and can smoke them easily. Then it goes back to the Razor race and someone sabotaged your car. Razor wins it from you and uses it to become the #1 spot on the Blacklist. Your goal in the career mode is to get to the #1 spot and beat Razor.

The Blacklist is a list of 15 of the top racers in the city. As you go up the list each one has a higher "bounty" with the cops. Meaning you're a wanted man with the police, and the #1 spot is the "Most Wanted." Before you jump into challenging each blacklist racer you have to earn the chance to challenge them. Each racer sends you a list of requirements before you can race em. You have to win a number of race events (sprint, circuit, drag, tollbooth or speedtrap). Sprint, circuit and drag are the same as in NFSU2 but the drag is much improved and much easier. Tollbooth is basically a time attack mode (easy as hell) and speedtrap is a race to see who gets the highest total top speed. You could be in 4th place and have the highest top speed and still win.

Then you have to achieve a number of milestones. These relate to the pursuit mode. Some examples are hit a minimum of 4 caps with your vehicle (known as trading paint), run through 2 roadblocks, evade a pursuit in less then 4 minutes, achieve 25,000 bounty in a pursuit, etc. Then the last requirement is to achieve a set amount of bounty. Bounty is earned in the pursuit mode. The more damage you cause, the more heat you earn and the longer the pursuit the more bounty you earn. Heat is kind of like the star system in Grand Theft Auto. Each star adds a level of police resistance. I think the highest is 4. Bounty is the price you're worth to the cops.

So after you've reached the requirements to challenge a blacklister you race them in two events. So far I've done either pursuit, circut or drag. But I think there are speedtrap events and maybe even tollbooth. When the races start they begin with a cool little real time cutscene with some dramatic elements as your oppenent shows up to the start line. I like these more then the real time videos. Once you beat them in both events you have the chance to win their car. Yes, it's only a chance. This is the main thing that pisses me off. You put your pink slips on the line but if the computer loses, they still have a chance to keep their car. You have to play a little minigame (if you want to call it that) and pick 2 of 3 markers. They will either be the pink slip, a get out of jail free card or a get out of impound lot card. If you pick the wrong ones you have to do the whole thing over if you want to win the blacklister's car. (trust me, you do). I've had to re-do races several times for this reason. So once you've beaten them you move up on the blacklist. Then the races get a little harder and you have more things to achieve before challenging the next dude. Luckily you unlock new parts, visual upgrades and performance upgrades with each blacklist racer beaten. You will want to upgrade your performance parts each time new ones are unlocked cause you'll need them.

Overall this is a great game. I played the Xbox version so I'm sure the 360 version has much better graphics but they look good enough for me. A lot better then NFSU2. One thing to note is that there is no night time racing. It's all during the day. It makes it much easier to see, which is nice, but there is still rain that shows up out of nowhere and dissapears just as quick. The sound is great but the music sucks. Each car has a distinct sound to their engines. And when you upgrade them it changes. My fav is the mustang muscle car sound. The music is the crappy EA trax as seen in other games. I turned them all off. I don't think this supports custom soundtracks but if it does I haven't found the option for it. Definitley pick this up if you're a racing fan.

Guitar Hero!!!

Well I finally got it. I picked it up tonight at Toys R Us along with Castlevania Curse of Darkness for Xbox which I got for only $9.00. There is a 20% off friends and family thing this week at TRU and my girlfriend works there so I decided to splurge and finally pick it up. I ended up paying about $55 for it which isn't bad at all when it's normally $70. I've tried out all the first tier songs and a couple of the second tier ones. The game is fun as hell even though I think I suck at it. I've gotten an average of 90% notes hit on easy so I guess that's pretty good. I only played for an hour or so tonight. I'll be playing it much more until NFS Most Wanted and Advance Wars DS arrive in the mail.

I also beat Quake 4 tonight. Man were the end bosses easy as hell. The Nexus was one of the easiest bosses I've ever faced and it was a complete pushover. The Macron was a little tough but nothing I couldn't handle. I beat the final boss on the second try but the room before the boss, with the 8 enemies you have to face in a row took me about an hour to do. I was getting so pissed off. I couldn't beat those damned flying tank dudes but once I finally did the spider tanks were easy. I think I'll write a review for it and see if that helps me get one of the three "rating" emblems. I've given just about all my games in my collection a rating but I still haven't gotten an emblem. All for now, later...
