They're in the gaming industry, so that places them in the console wars by default.
Apples and Oranges don't apply here if I'd ask me. Apples and Oranges offer distinctive nutrition values, Wii U and all the consoles offer one sort of value: gaming, and thus puts them all in the same boat.
Besides, they're claiming their software lineups, their concept in general will give them an edge over the PS4 / XBone, and that sounds like they're competing in their own way
Had the Wii-U launched along with the next ten, would you think they'd sell as many units ad they sold do far? Especially with simultaneous hands on demos of all consoles?
People are yapping all sorts of yap away, but they won't get to the bottom of the matter..

Well, coz they knew they couldn't compete. As talented as u might be in making fun games, if u do not evolve and advance, it's over for you.
this was their last card to play and they knew it.
They came out this early to generate as much sales as they can before the storm comes, because like it or not, and Gamespot and other magazines should ask Nintendo this: why aren't you at par with the next gen tech? And to ask for a genuine answer, which would be:
- They were deluded with their own idea of gaming, and stuck close to home and played it safe, losing track of the evolving nature of the industry.
- They didn't have the expertise or the know-how of that level, and thus they had to jump ship as soon as they could.
Again, wrap it up in any fancy garment u like. The fact remains is thar they fell behind.
Sure you can cater to a certain crowd, even with outdated or simple tech, as the 3DS....etc. All it means is that you're downgraded to a lower category and you'll no longer playing with the big boys..PS4 / Xone.
Just look at Blackberry, where it was and where it is now, from hero to zero, and Nintendo was heading all along....Just takes longer I'm console years is all.

What's the BIG deal with Knack being bad? It's a basic cartoony action game, which can be compared to the likes of Crash Bandicoot...etc, which is no big deal.
Yet, they have the lil wheeners to compare it to Ryse.....Ryse, which is supposed to be a GoW compertitor ffs....It's a AAA title that sunk as LOW as Knack, a lowly ass cartoony project.
Second of all, all this 720 - 1080p bullcrap...the PS4 has superior GPU power...PERIOD...How are you going to argue your way out of that...You can't....
