[QUOTE="HardQuor"]Marriage has existed long before Christianity (or any religious institution) had ever been found. As far back as 3000 BC (and most likely before then), the ancient Egyptians were practicing marriages. And they had the sense to acknowledge them as non-religious, civil unions. (source)
Now while you may argue that there's no evidence that the ancient Egyptians allowed for homosexual marriages, we do know that their marriages were not religious matters. If marriages are wholly civil matters, left in the hands of the government, then that government is the only authority that can say whether or not homosexuals can marry. Not any religion, no matter how deluded they are in thinking they are under attack.
Our government is run by it's citizens, it's public. Therefore, we - the people - are the only ones that should be defining who can and can not marry. Why we've allowed this religious farce to keep a stranglehold on what is purely a non-religious matter is beyond me. Especially when considering the fact that, as a nation, we've been fighting for human rights, equality, and freedom for over a century.Super_Socialist
the public has no valid say in what two people should be able to do, including marriage. get the gov out of this because it has no purpose.
Government oppression is oppression.
I find it hilarious that people talk like the government shouldn't control people but they have a right to rob people of a marriage because of their sexual preference.
I can't stand socialism and I can't stand governments and politicians acting like they have a right to take rights or privacy from people.
If there was actually a politician with a chance that supported all this, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.

I think some of you are a little confused about the government's role in all of this. I would normally agree that the government should take a backseat when it comes to our personal freedoms, but in this instance, it's the government that is PROVIDING the benefits for marriage. The government taxes us, married couples get tax cuts. The insurance companies regard government-recognized married couples in a much better light than singles. The banks regard them in much the same way when considering loans. The same goes for credit bureaus. So it's not so much that the government is telling us what to do, it's the government providing benefits for a select group, then telling us that only certain people can be a part of that group.
