I have played both. My PE teacher in high school was American and he taught us how to play. Because we are Aussie and fantastic we did it without pads... like rugby.

Soccer= soft

US Football= hard

Rugby is a hard sport, yankee football might as well be played on a jumping castle. Take off the bubble wrap padding they wear and maybe you'll have yourself a "hard" sport. Football can be soft, it depends where it's played. It was never meant to be a brutal game, though. It's supposed to be about skill more than anything.
