I don't understand why people seem to forget so quickly. When the Gameboy came out, every person that bought the Gameboy bought it for the sole reason of PORTABLE GAMING. No other reason. It was meant for hardcore gamers that couldn't wait to get home and needed something for when they were on the road. It was not a replacement for consoles, but a secondary device.

There is absolutely NO reason to get a PS Vita, 3DS, or any new handheld device when Smarthphones have enjoyable games that are entertainment enough for the road. There is no reason to go out and buy a PS Vita other than to hack it due to it's 3g connectivity, for it's possible use as a data phone.

I think this has been a smart move on MS to stay out of the handheld gaming business and concentrate on home console entertainment. Technology continues to move and if Sony or Nintendo aren't keeping up with the trends they should rightfully give up their efforts in the gaming industry.

Most of the gameboys sucess came from Tetris, without it, it would not have had a foothold. To be honest, All 3 major handhelds at the time were all useless performace hitting battery draining losers, and the Lynx was criticized the most for its four hour battery life. Which magically seems to be ok now so wtf?

I won't disagree about the Tetris, that's a valid point.

Ask people why they bought a DS. They didn't buy one for on the road, and it was a huge success.

Handheld are for portable gaming, people who buy a handheld to play in their couch are just being foolish. I can understand if someone is watching TV, but overall people don't generally buy handhelds for the games, they by them for the convenience.

Open the hard/software to small time developers to create their own little games and put them in some sort of app/game store where the small time developers can make some money. Another thing they MUST do is make this a mobile entertainment device, not just a handheld console. So integrating this wirelessly with their PS3, ability to be able to connect it to your TV or PS3 and be able to pay the games on your big screen TV when at home.

One more thing, use it's built-in 3g connectivity to allow some type of Skype/Voip feature could make it a nice smartphone potential.

I dont' remember having to sign a contract when I bought my 3DS. I do remember having to when I bought my iPhone.

So get a no contract phone...

It is estimated that by 2013, 1 BILLION Smartphones will be used around the world. There is absolutely no competing against the Smartphone market. Again, Nintendo and Sony should just embrace it, just like Microsoft has done with their Windows Phone.

:| Microsoft already did Windows Mobile way before Windows Phone, Windows Phone is just the successor.

I didn't mean that Sony and Nintendo should build a mobile phone, I just threw in there the Windows Phone because when they come out with Windows Phone 8, it will be tied in with their desktop environment and the Xbox 360 Environment, so this will make it so much easier for Developers to build games for all platforms at the same time.

I think both Nintendo and Sony are making a mistake by using their own hardware in the mobile gaming industry. They should become Third Party producers of Games in the Apple app store, Android Market, and Windows Live Market Place. They can make a lot more money than trying to tie in a few hardcore gamers into a single device to play their exclusive games. This is a failed business mode in the new age of technology and will not keep them up into the next generation of gaming.

SaltyMeatballs

They wouldn't make as much money as on their own handheld. Smartphone gamers expect cheap games, "big" iPhone games cost $10, Apple take 30% cut.

Nintendo wouldn't make as much.

Right now Nintendo make most of the money from their first party games, retailers get a cut, let's say from every $40 3DS game Nintendo make $27 (66%) (I don't know how much of a cut retailers get, I'm guessing 33%), and they make money from 3rd party publishers who pay royalties to release games on their system. Then good games sell systems, which brings more good games, and more money for Nintendo. Future hardware sales will probably make them profit too.

This won't go well for them in the long run. Sooner or later those same publishers will figure out that 12 Million 3DS Vs. 500 Million Smartphones is a huge gap. Why would Publishers continue publishing games for Handheld devices when they can program and publish them for Smartphones, reach millions more people, and have a higher chance of their product succeeding.

Like someone said, I wouldn't be surprised if Google comes in, but with Samsung. They already have ties with Samsung through their mobile division. I think however that they will go the way of OnLive. Google has been investing huge amounts of money on the "Cloud". They've been investing in new high speed internet technology, so it's natural they would attempt Cloud Gaming.
