[QUOTE="nocoolnamejim"] Why not take it one step further? If someone can't speak English in a courtroom, no point in having them testify on a crime even if they do have an interpreter.nocoolnamejim

The article implied that the man could speak English, he just prefered to address them in Spanish.

And there's nothing wrong with that. I speak a small smattering of Swedish due to being married to one. If I was asked to testify on something in Sweden I'm pretty sure that I'd prefer to speak in a language I was vastly more comfortable in for fear of saying something stupid due to my extremely limited abilities in my non-native tongue and have a professional interpreter translate my thoughts.

Well, the man's been living here for 23 years. I'm going to assume he's become quite fluent in English. If you were fluent in Swedish you probably wouldn't have a problem speaking Swedish it in that given situation.

I sympathize with the Senator because it seems the man is unnecessarily complicating things.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="nocoolnamejim"] By Senator Harris saying, in effect, that he needs to (in OT's vernacular) "English or gtfo" despite having a perfectly capable translator along with him. Whether or not he SHOULD know more English based on how long he's been in the country is completely irrelevant. There's no law saying he has to. He provided an interpreter (or was provided an interpreter) to make himself understood by the committee. End of discussion really. The amount of English he knows is not the subject of the hearing. Senate Bill 9 (whatever that is) IS the subject of the hearing.nocoolnamejim
And no law saying the committee has to hear him. So we're back to what the committee accepts.

Why not take it one step further? If someone can't speak English in a courtroom, no point in having them testify on a crime even if they do have an interpreter.

[QUOTE="gotdangit"]I was thinking neat casual, but not the suit, not for the places I have in mind, and also, who do I ask if they're hiring, and if they are, should I ask for the manager to leave the resume with, or what, because I do not trust those common workers.

Enid_Green

It's usually appropriate to ask if a manager is available.

I'd personally ask if they're hiring, not for management. If management is busy (and in a lot of places they will be), they're going to be annoyed when they see you aren't a customer making a complaint.

If he's turning in a resume or an application it's probably best given to a manager. In an old, old job of mine back in highschool regular employees would leave submitted resumes lying around all the time.

Anything other than plain. I've never been able to stomache plain milk.

[QUOTE="Firebird-5"]

  1. sleep on it
  2. dress neat casual, a suit even
  3. bring a copy of your resume
  4. politely ask if they are hiring
  5. if they are, leave your resume with the manager

That's the spirit. Sleep is overrated, I've been up since 3 A.M.

[QUOTE="Netherscourge"]

I don't recall abortions being done with concrete blocks to the skull at a construction site...

That was murder. Pure and simple.

Netherscourge

I doubt abortions are very pleasant, either.

No abortion is pleasant.

Murdering a day old baby, however, is criminal.

I am aware murder is criminal...

I was pointing out the irony in your post.
